Dell U2410 information. [Long, a Story, a Conspiracy]
« on: Fri, 12 April 2019, 12:27:21 »
Very popular monitor for Old people

This monitor came out at the end of 2009. It was a big deal at the time, because Wide-Gamut was a new buzzword among enthusiasts, most buyers didn't even understand what it did, but they liked the concept, m0ar Colors.

TFTcentral did their review splash on this monitor. They ran into trouble calibrating this monitor because the Factory settings were bonkers on color temperature, leading to Reduced contrast ratio on almost all color modes, as low as 500:1 on sRGB, instead of 730+ :1. They rated this monitor as Lesser to the already dominant HP LP2475W, which used an older iteration of the same line of LG- IPS panel.

It was not discovered until much later that the factory menu RGB gain settings were causing the limited contrast. The settings for BLUE gain had been set at the factory anywhere between 200-240 (out of 255). EVEN THOUGH at that setting relative to the Red and Green Gain, the monitor was still BELOW 6500k color temperature.

So in software, when this situation is Calibrated, the monitor will operate with its peak brightness eaten into, thus resulting in lower peak- contrast. (contrast brightest white vs darkest black)

Rectifying the gains issue in the factory menu, thoroughly alleviates the contrast limit, and puts performance lvl even slightly above the HP LP2475W which TFTcentral loved.

Conspiracy theory is, HP paid off TFTcentral not to revisit the review even after the problem was discovered and fixed.

Measurement reports demonstrating the Completed Fix, included at end of post .html files.
You can see for yourself This monitor exceeds the 500:1 low contrast limit from the TFT central review.

On Tp4's 4000hr U2410 sets.

To Enter hidden factory menu. -turn off monitor, hold second and fourth led, while holding turn on, keep holding, all 5 lights will now remain on when hands taken off,  press top led to enter factory menu-

Correct RGB gains balance (for D65 color temperature)

factory menu item (standard menu color "Preset Modes" label)

6500k (Standard mode) 246 243 255
sRGB (sRGB mode) 207 230 255
AdobeRGB (Adobe RGB mode) 215 232 255

Approximate gamma

Standard mode, 1.9
sRGB, 2.2
AdobeRGB, 2.2

The gamma response default is as above, you can't change it without calibration. it's listed just to give you an idea of what you're looking at.

Contrast ratio w/gains fix applied

Standard mode, 800:1 uncalibrated, 770:1 calibrated
sRGB, 770:1 uncalibrated, 730:1 calibrated
AdobeRGB, 770:1 uncalibrated, 730:1 calibrated

Standard mode provides the Highest contrast ratio,  But it is the Widest gamut mode on this monitor, THEREFORE,  all Non-CMS monitored apps will have Saturation blow out.. where Fire-engine red, is the only red. hahaha. Some people like that though.

sRGB is the only color accurate mode for Default desktop usage.

However, the limitation here is that the monitor is artificially clamping the gamut in this mode, leading to slightly Reduced sRGB edges. Whereas if using a Color Engine application + Wide gamut modes, this monitor has near complete sRGB coverage. (see gamut below)

Gamut:

Standard mode (99.7% srgb, 96.79 Argb, 89% dci-p3)
sRGB mode (96.04% srgb)

Gamut will be a few percent higher at high brightnesses, but the blackpoint will be no good.

Black point.

@Minimum brightness, 0.097 nit.
> At brightness setting of 0, this monitor produces its deepest black, the contrast ratio is unaffected.

Physical Temperature.

These oldies use CCFL backlight, if you have more than 10 degrees F delta from when the monitor is calibrated, it could swing the colors too much.

Overall Tp4 Impression:

Pros:

Very accurate color processor w/ fine 10bit precision. Gradients look phenomenal.

A working sRGB mode, quite useful for day to day.

Has Component input for Playstation 2/ Original Xbox consoles. (upscaling quality NOT so good, but it's not what this monitor was meant for)

Cons:

Blacks arn't great compared to Modern VA-lcds,

Color accuracy sensitive to room temperature, a limitation of CCFL backlighting system.

Uses alot of power, RUNS HOT.

U def need a different setting then, hahaha.

Hrrrrm.. I would subtract 5-10 from the Red and Green values,  and go by eye, keep blue at 255, no exceptions

Yea, 27" is fine, some people prefer the 30" because they're 16:10 vs 16:9 27 inch.

43 inch is also kind of on the scene, but you need to mount to wall and have a longer pull out keeb tray.

Waiting for the Ryzen 7nm 5ghz chips to come out.. That should be the ultimate show stopper for intel.
