I feel like it had potential, but was poorly executed.

The main issue was that their central plot was extremely thin..  and of course kind of creepy..

For example,  The story is watchable because both of the cast is highly attractive..   good looking guy wakes up good looking girl, no big deal.

Now imagine the male lead was  ugly ol' Tp4,  and Tp4 woke up some hot chick..    Yea.....  that went from romance to horror real fast.

hahahahahahahahahahhahaahahaa...

watch out ladies.. tp4 knows all about short circuiting pods.

Oh poop..

sorry nubbinator..

I thought you were talking about the movie-- Passenger--

hahahahahha

I saw both arrival and passenger on the same day.. so i got the two titles mixed up..

Yea arrival is totally awful..  worst movie I've seen in years..

The way the aliens behave is irrational..   Had they this advanced technology, they could've built a damn tablet to translate and teach us the language,  why go through that weird glass ink bs..

Totally impossible premise..

Seeing this thread, I read the wiki and kept thinking how much it reminded me of the exquisite Ted Chiang story "The Story of Your Life" until I realized that that was where it had originated. Now I want to see the movie.

And for anybody who likes to read, Ted Chiang is an extraordinary writer who has produced a very small body of work, but all of it is excellent.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

I just watched "Arrival"

Having read the Chiang story a few years ago, and already considering it to be one of the finest things that I have ever read in my (long) life, I was bowled over by the quality of the movie.

It was handled meticulously well and far above average for a "Hollywood production", and the end brought tears to my eyes.
However, I feel sorry for people who see the movie without having read the story first, it must be perplexing and frustrating.

what..... that's ridiculous.. it was not that compelling..

to tears?   over what the dead kid ?   yea... that's suppose to be sad and all, but  for her to CHOOSE having the child destined to never grow up is her succumbing to the lack of agency..

What proof do the aliens have that such eventuality could not be averted..   If anything by forcing this weird alien power on her, they may have been the ones who enforced it..   Therefore the aliens were the ones who killed her child..

So, overall.. bad movie..  maybe the story you read works better ,  but this movie as-is,  is not very good.

Reading by campfire light.. sigh....

Hahahahah.. while it is possible..   it's definitly a source of eye strain..

See this is a huge problem here..  Reading is much better now that we have big computer monitors to read from.. it's much bigger font than any book can give.. so eye strain from reading is dramatically reduced..

Books are a major contributor to myopia, because of the short focal distance the eye must endure for long hours..

He's worsening his kid's eyes by making them go Tech free like this.

I don't think this fight the power message is correctly expressed..

They're touring our Modern world in a bus..

A bus that could not be produced without capitalist organization and research..

Capitalism comes at a cost.. and with it corruption , compromises in individual integrity,   there' s nothing inherently wrong with that,  it happens this way for a reason, humans are not integrated with each other enough to forgo some sort of rights compromise for the sake of organizational synergistic output..

Alot of this is unrealistic..

To be able to educate children to high levels of scholarly comprehension would directly conflict with the necessity for them to hunter-gather..

There is not enough time in the day to accomplish something so fantastical in this film.

The root of the message may be correct.. that we need to take steps back to re-evaluate our collective goals..

But direct rebellion and navigating outside of cohesive modern society is to create negative productivity..

tears?   over what the dead kid ?

You are such an arrogant moron.

My tears came with the conversation with the Chinese general, if you must know.

The Chiang story: "The Story of Your Life" was the story that the mother told her daughter as a series of flashbacks. The movie turned the timeline inside-out and reordered everything, downplaying the life-line of the daughter, which, of course, did not matter so much if you were experiencing it as an existential reverie un-moored from the human timeline. That decision shifted the plot and focus of the movie in another direction for the sake theatrics and drama, the price that must be paid to convert a quiet philosophical musing into an action movie.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”

Arrogant perhaps,   but your alternative is to become  an emotional raging female organ like yourself..     so.. hahahahahhaa

I think you're pushing some thing from the book that you've read,,, which was not explained adequately in the movie or presented well..

There is a huge disconnect from what you're saying and the movie I watched..
