ASMR
« on: Fri, 13 December 2019, 00:24:47 »
So as a kid I used to watch Bob Ross all the time. I loved the way he spoke and it happen to air right around the time I got home from summer camp. I never knew why his voice was so soothing for me, but it was.

It seems now we have an actual term for it: "ASMR." I'm too lazy to Google whether this has been a term for a while, but I suppose that explains why his voice and paintings have relaxed me. I know it's very trendy right now with all the YouTubers trying to hitch on the hype. For a while I scoffed at those who seem to just monetize on the idea. But here I am, studying for finals, and I have ASMR videos playing in the background; I find it very helpful to stay focused. Much more than gentle music.
A few years ago I stumbled on GentleWhispering's channel before ASMR blew up, and that's usually the only channel I can tolerate. I don't understand those Tubers who put just weird sounds and whatnot; I'd rather have a soft voice saying actual sentences.

Also, is white noise included in this category? When my oldest was a baby we looked into ways to help her sleep. We got a white noise machine, and it worked so well that we realized we were falling asleep much better with it too, so we got one for our own room. We can't sleep without it now.

I have seen that some of the same girls that do "ASMR" videos on Youtube are also on Pornhub ...

"ASMR" whispering videos actually has the opposite than intended effect on me. I don't get soothed. I get irritated.

Ditto. I don't get it at all. I occasionally use "rainfall sounds" or "Star Trek Bridge Sounds 10 hours" to block noise at work or to sleep though.

I don't think nice sounds or white noise necessarily qualify as ASMR. As I understand it, technically ASMR is the response you have to a stimulus, not the stimulus itself: basically the tingly feeling in your head you get when you listen to cool music.

People keep tagging my typing videos as ASMR, so I started labelling them as such at some point.

Many have also asked me to do more traditional ASMR, the whispery stuff. However, I find this creepy as ****, so I'm not gonna do it :p .

I'm not sure white noise qualifies. Post your favorite ASMR videos here please.

I really like this one because it's not really ASMR but for some reason has the same effect on me.

It's really not just the keyboard community it seems – I regularly get comments stating they don't give a **** about keyboards and just come to listen to my voice xD .

Writing on my Olympia Report DeLuxe (electric typewriter) has this effect on me. Just flipping the switch to ON, hearing the motor Hum and the machine type away. The sound of the electric carriage return. I love that. It’s from 1974 I believe. I have many more exciting and rare machines than that one, but the Report has to be my favourite. Dunno why.

I learned about ASMR recently too.  I get pretty intoxicating tingles when listening to someone rub something against a textured surface (lol weird I know) and also if someone is handling my property (even weirder).  As a kid I always just assumed something was wrong with me.  Oddly enough given keyboards is one of my hobbies I hate the sound of someone typing on a board especially a clicky board.

my two favorite twitch channels for this are:
- https://www.twitch.tv/copykat_ (she often does "no whisper" which is great for me because only the textured stuff works on me)
- https://www.twitch.tv/rubytrue (she does a lot of different kinds of stuff which is nice because most people just whisper in the mic)

Rowdy heard that Apple did some ASMR videos, so he just googled it to link, but, er, found stuff on Apple music that is NSFW.  Tsk tsk, Apple.

Anyway, those of us with misophonia might not get into ASMR as much as others, because what one person finds soothing another person might find intensely annoying to the point of violent distraction.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

This may sound weird, but some chiropractor videos are very ASMR'ey to me. That and cooking videos without music or voices. Like Peaceful Cuisine on Youtube.

This doesn't label itself ASMR, but it qualifies for me, I've watched it a few times, It's just excellent.

Correct me if i am wrong here, but isn't ASMR something like a staph infection or a fatty deposit on your boyd?

I'm not in the medical field, but perhaps you are thinking of MRSA?

The closest thing I get to ASMR are the albums Taeha Types uploaded to Spotify that are literally just recordings of typing on keyboards. Even that I can't listen to for too long bc my mind wanders to wanting to listen to music or podcasts instead lol
