Bough Nothr' Laptop
« on: Wed, 04 September 2019, 17:39:36 »

So.. yea.. Disappointed in myself.

Buhh.. Deal's pretty gud'

Dell g3
9300h
1660Ti Max-q (slowest version basically, ~desktop 1060 6gb in perf)
2x4gb ram
512gb ssd
AC-wifi (1x1 antenna,  WTF is this, why is this an option), Hopefully not bios locked.

51wh battery (this seems too small)

Screen is probably garbage.. Will update when I get it.

Price was good though,  $767 after tax, + $150 gift card promo, so ~$610ish

Seems like a good deal.. Not sure.. if the screen is 2 p00p, hopefully upgradable,

No, only using it to watch 4K HDR movies < downscaled to 1080p.  This requires a gaming laptop, integrated GPU can't do it.

There will be Zero Gaming done on this laptop.

Only n00bies game on laptops.

How many laptops does this make now?

I only have one at the moment and basically only use it to stream content from my media server to the TVs.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

OKOKOK..

Canceled the Dell G3 order.

Switched to G5 order.

This should be the better deal overall.

Because You get a MUCH better screen.  Most importantly, this screen has Wide Gamut.

Costs ~$160 more than the G3,

But gains,  + Wide Gamut + 2 cores + (NON) Max Q gpu.

Soooo... only the G3 arrived 2day,  guess the G5 is gonna be here later, even though it says expect delivery today.

G3 screen is indeed not great..   Very weak coloers.  58.2% Srgb,  Peak 6504k Brightness 224 cd/m2,

ODDLY enough, the Contrast ratio is fantastic (For an IPS),  1341 :1 ,  that's surprisingly high.

The Dithering is a bit weak sauce, so gradients arn't too sm00t.... MAY be a driver issue. not totally sure.

After Extensive testing..

I have to say,  EVEN THOUGH,  this panel really lacks gamut (color),  Watching HDR on it is quite OK..  HDR mapped to 220cd/m2  is somewhat below the threshold for highlights.  However the contrast ratio of this particular IPS makes it acceptable.. Of course IPS still chews out shadow detail, this is a given, This one doesn't bite as hard as those 1000:1 and 700:1 panels, which take a HUGE chunk of black out.

If you like the color red, welllll, that's really the biggest weakpoint for this panel.. It can't do FIRE all that faithfully. And Indian people look Greyish instead of brown.

Now waiting on the g5.

They didn't let me cancel, because it already shipped.

Impressed with the G3 overall,  buh this IS a 6-bit panel as it turns out.

not the worst 6-bit panel I've ever seen though. hahahaha

isn't the worst wifi card ever, but it's SOooooo slow.. 1x1 antenna, not OK.

Bottom case cover is not well designed,  the hot exhaust pushes directly at a few important plastic clips,  over time and heat cycling, these clips will become brittle and break during removal.

How do people game on laptops. the screen is smole, and so you have to sit pretty darn close to it, but then , your arms arn't comfortable, because they're bent at an odd angle...

This is very likely to cause RSI.

GDI, the dell rep lied 2 Tp4.    Received the G5 today.

the 144hz panel is NOT wide-gamut,  it is Srgb, albeit good coverage.

Sigh...  On the one hand, it's a pretty good panel w/ 144hz..

On the other hand,  mah mewviez won't l00k as gud'..

So, if anyone is getting the g5,  it seems the 60hz panel is the one with Wide Gamut..

after some testing.. g5 is obviously the better laptop of the 2.

Out of the box, it indeed thermal throttles,  but This is within design spec.

Basically they're allow a peak power limit within the dissipation envelope. and 9/10 times, the reduced CPU clock will not reduce frame rate.

Undervolted, it can hold 4ghz, However, it's as loud as a hair dryer, 2 feet in front of your face.

Even slightly louder than the G3.

The non-maxq GPU is alot faster more than 20% in alot of cases..

The chassis design is better, the fan is not blowing at the bottom of the screen overheating the LEDs.

Throttling by design and sounds like a hair dryer even undervolted, and this is the better option?  I'll stick with my desktop thanks.

Yea, it's a problem on all of these g4m3r laptops. The dissipation envelope at this (size) is ~150 watts.

The throttling is to keep it stable @ 100 C,  the chip is designed to handle the temp.

ALTHOUGH,  full disclosure,  Tp4 has already burned out the power LED on the G3.  Don't know what happened, guess it overheated. and one of the traces burned up.

But there arn't any options though.. The only laptops that CAN watch 4K HDR movies in full quality are laptops with ~1060-1660ti-2060  gpus.

And these gpus are only in  these Hot running gaming laptops.

I can buy a more meek cooler running laptop, but if it can't even play the movies standard for the next 10 years,  it'll become ewaste quite quickly.

With the undervolt on the CPU,  The GPU can overclock to 1920mhz,  ~ 6% slower than the Desktop version.

That's pretttty decent for a laptop..

Ok, the G3  1660ti maxQ benches ~10-15% lower than the G5 1660ti vanilla.

In total, +2 Cpu cores + 10% on Gpu + 144hz screen + 1tb spinner - minus 256gb ssd   = + $160..

DIY upgrading the G3 screen on its own to 144hz, would cost $120 on its own.

Hrrrrrrmmm...................   Tp4 believes initial valuation is --correct-- that the g5 is a better buy....

That said,  going with the G5, Tp4 will have $230 locked to Rakuten .. upgrading the SSD sometime this year, but still..

Gekha Opinions ??
