Black Friday GPU deals
« on: Sun, 29 October 2023, 13:56:52 »
Do you guys think there will be some good gpu deals this Black Friday/Cyber Monday?
I have RTX3070 and play 4K, was thinking to upgrade to 7900XT, but price is too high for me now (£779 in UK).
If it would drop 10-15% I may be pick one...

Never hunted gpu during this period - do deals go down a lot or no?

Maybe wait for 4070 Super to come out?

There will be some and I expect most of them will be for AMD.

For Nvidia, don't plan on anything too radical, the margins, especially on later gens is dismal at best which is why EVGA bowed out. You can't really mark down Nvidia cards without losing money so I would expect clearing of old stock and those deals where you buy a GPU and get a "free" motherboard or shady PSU.

I wish to have similar drops here i UK. If XTX would be £800, then XT should be £600.

Yeah, I've been always on green side, but now, when ATI/AMD caught up with things and are on same level as greens in terms of performance, I could jump over the fence.
If I can get more frames per dollar from red card, I'm fine with that.

In terms of performance and technology - are they on same level?
I mean all those DLSS, RT, IQ, temperatures, loudness, drivers stability etc?

AMD has usually matched dollar for dollar on performance, they couldn't keep up at the high end but at the low to mid range they often competed just fine for the most part.

People complaining about drivers and such are the same ones who initially complained about AMD CPUs and are also the same ones who claim will claim Iphone works better than Android and vice versa. They don't, again, for the most part. People get used to one thing and gloss over those problems on their favorite and point out problems on the other side. It's the same with Ford Vs Chevy, Mac vs Windows, Iphone vs Android... I doubt most people have really had issues they just parrot the things others have said, especially when it's the hardcore fanboys making the claims.

DLSS is an Nvidia technology, AMD has their own called FSR.
Ray Tracing... honestly, unless you play a few specific games or do 3d rendering, it's mostly a non-starter but AMD does have it now, just not as many cores for it. Same for video encoding, they lag a little.
IQ?
Temps should be less a concern than heat in general, I will GLADLY take a card running at 70c but only using 150 watts vs one running 60c but using 400 watts as that 400watts is going wreck room temps, combined with a high watt cpu, you're basically running a space heater on medium. Fine in winter, horrible in summer, death if you live in the desert. As long as it's stable and well under max temp, you shouldn't worry what temp it's running and consider the heat output to be more important.

This isn't to say it will be a perfect 1to1, in fact that's the point, if they were the same there's be no point in having the option. The question should be will you be happy with it.

AMD is the better buy for everything except ray-traced games. I'd argue even 4090 still doesn't have enough ooumph for ray-traced titles, so the price is still kinda steep for what you get.

I'll be happy if it won't run too hot and loud and will give me good 40+ fps in 4K gaming with full details.
IQ - image quality, I saw some tests and comparisons of red and green and I could see a difference in rendering.

Each renders a bit differently with neither doing everything perfect but you're not going to be looking at it side by side so as long as it looks good it shouldn't matter.

Nothing is good enough for what people expect from it because of how it works.

I said from the start it was marketing hype and I still think it was/is. I suspect Nvidia was focused on enterprise A.I. and just needed something to attract new desktop sales which they'd been ignoring and having already developed this decided it was their new "thing".

What do you guys think of RX 6950 XT?
Good price now, same as RX 7800 XT.
Is that old gen card still ok today?
Or would 7800 XT be better option? Power use is less, a bit less performance.
Should be enough for 4K?

It comes down to the specific game. Check the benchmarks for the big ones on your list.

Checked them already, minimum around 40 fps for RX 7800 XT.
Thing is I read some reviews that people complain about drivers issue, crashing etc
I dont want that crap again, like back in 90s with Radeons...

Should I better wait for rumoured 4070 Super?

What's are the big games on your list.

In any case you wouldn't get a 4070 from a 3070 because that's a side grade, 10-30% bump.

4070 Ti at the minimum. Probably 4080.   At which point, if sales occur, they'll happen more steeply on the RED team's 79xx.

You can buy both during the holiday, and if the radeon gives you trouble, just return it.

You really have to get a 7900xt or xtx   or 4070 Ti and Above to make it worthwhile.

Tp4 recommends just getting a 4090, because yea it's overpriced for what it is, but it's still the best value if you count the cost of the rest of your system.

Dead Space, Alan Wake 2, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk. I would be happy with 30% bump.

Wow, Newegg, don't hurt yourself...

Gigabyte RTX 3060 TI
$349.95  down from $349.99
LOWEST PRICE IN 30 DAYS!

Okay, so you can also save a whopping $5 with a promo code and I obviously cherry picked this, but almost nothing Nvidia has serious markdowns (often only $5-20).
