Lasers?! Not your average cat toy. (warning low bandwidth)

Hey guys, never really posted anything non keyboard related.
A little back story,
I had a 80mW 532nm(green) laser back in 09 and ended up losing it at a party,thankfully without batteriesa, and needed a key to operate, otherwise someone could have hurt themselves.
Jump back to now, saw some awesome new stuff in the laser scene over on LPF, and bit the bullet. Things are much cheaper comparatively.
This guy I know is a beast with a lathe and I had him make me something adequate for this diode.
Long and behold, the Cyan Cannon!


Takes 2 18650 3000mAh batteries(non parallel)
It has a clicky switch at the tail that acts as a safety by disconnecting the negative end of the battery. It is operated by the momentary button on the side.

Has a 1" diameter Copper inner heatsinking for maximum heat dissipation. This diode gets HOT
The "legal" limit on lasers produced for consumers in the United States is capped at <5mW as determined by the amount of power required to do damage to your eye before your blink reflex.
There aren't any legal repercussions for ownership, only for using it with malicious intent or accidental incidents. REQUIRES CAUTION

That's why I have these for when I'm inside it's not being pointed in the sky.

This diode is running at 3.5A with a full 4.7W's of pure 465nm awesome.

I've always wanted a crazily powerful laser but never managed to find one I could get my hands on before my more sensible side convinced me I had absolutely no use for it.  It's been a while, my interest is piqued once again!

A 5w laser is an eye hazard up to about 800 feet, so you could easily get a neighbor, but across town is not possible.

what if that lazer hits my property, does it become mine? how can i defend myself from unwanted lazers trespassing onto my property. Am i liable for shining it back towards you with a mirror? possession is 9/10th's of the lazer...

It does. And thing being a multimode diode, the beam is more of a bar instead of a circle, which ends up having a high divergence. So the distance of "danger" is lowered significantly by this.

Damn!  That's crazy powerful.  Careful not pointing it too much into the sky... especially at planes or someone will be coming near your door.

Holy moly  I too have been wanting to get a laser but hadn't really imagined something of this magnitude. Now I want one even more but it would be way down on the bucket list of wants. My gosh tho is it beautiful.

The coherence of the beam can't be maintained indefinitely. The farther it travels the more it's dispersed. Plus pollutants in the atmosphere (dust, smoke, moisture, etc.) filter it further.
