What platform would you use for a new blog?
« on: Mon, 25 November 2013, 13:15:04 »
So I've been wanting to create a blog as a central location for all my writing. I'd like an outlet that isn't a forum so that I can potentially draw a bigger audience and just post things that aren't Keyboard/StarCraft 2 related. I've only done a little searching and was hoping someone who actually had a blog could chime in. Trying to figure out if I should use tumblr or Wordpress for a blog. I'm not sure what other options are out there but I'd like something relatively simple since I'm really bad at coding/programming. Thoughts anyone?

Yeah, get WordPress. I use it at work (have the admin panel up on my other monitor atm) and it's a decent, user-friendly blog software.

Are really nice and simple, I've never followed through on a blog yet tho. Tumblr is also nice.
I've always disliked wordpress!

edit: i noticed ghost isnt quite ready, i thought it was. but if you want to host your own I can help out :) it also uses markdown which is syntax similar to bbc code. (but way better)

Yeah, get WordPress. I use it at work (have the admin panel up on my other monitor atm) and it's a decent, user-friendly blog software.

My current site (updated about a billion weeks ago -- buriedplanet.com) is on Drupal, and I like it. But if all you want to do is write a few posts, hit 'publish' and call it a day, then WordPress is what you want. It's dead simple without being featureless, and the best thing about WordPress is that if you do decide you want to add more bells and whistles (polls, a shoutbox, etc.) it has add-ons that are ridiculously easy to use; you just go to the Add-On page and select what you want. Done.

Drupal updates, by comparison, are like arcane demon-summonings. Stay inside the pentagram, in the name of all that is holy! Drupal is more flexible, and let's you get under the hood more easily, but it's not for the faint of heart.

Are you an idiot? Forums are for communities of people with similar interests to interact (like this one), where as Blogs are for publishing articles, be them factual or opinion-based. I mean, Blogs could have other uses I suppose, but saying they are the same as forums is just moronic...

tumblr. easy to theme, easy to deal with, easy to add a custom domain if it matters, lots of built-in exposure with tags, no administrative headaches. i use wordpress for sites that i need to customize/extend using plugins but for basic stuff, tumblr is my favorite.

So on a more serious note I'm still stuck on my three original ideas: Tumblr, Wordpress, and creating my own so I could learn how to do it. I was thinking about this last night and tumblr seems easiest even though I don't think it's a proper "blog" platform. If my sister can figure it out so can I...

I think I'm going to poke around Wordpress and see if I can figure it out. But please, keep the suggestions coming, I don't really know what I'm doing haha.

You can use github and use it as a blogging platform. It's quite easy to set up (lots of tutorials on google) and they look nice.

@tp4

@CPT
I have heard good things about WordPress (Not too difficult to use, if you have any problems there are plently of tutorials out there), just make sure in whatever way your hosting the site, it is WordPress compatible, some people try to get more money out of it. (Don't ask why I am just relaying what I have been told by friends)
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

Ha, that's exactly my issue with tumblr. I find hard to take it seriously when there's such ridiculous things as #ThrowbackThursdays, #yolo, #fun, and #OOTD.

You can use github and use it as a blogging platform. It's quite easy to set up (lots of tutorials on google) and they look nice.

What?? You can use github for not coding things??

Wordpress or Blogger. If you purchase hosting and host WP on your hosting then you can customize the CSS. http://ionlydreamincolor.com/ Heres a blog I made for someone. Still have to re do the header for tablet resolution. Good luck sir! Blogs are fun.

Tumblr if you want to grow an audience quickly and/or don't want to host yourself. Wordpress (installed on your own webspace) if you want more control and are prepared to put in more effort in promoting it.

I think I would just get a decent CMS (Content Management System) for websites in general, then download some layouts for it that look good for blogging. Concrete5 looks great.

But if all you're doing is putting together all your writing in one place, most should work great. Heck, you can get by with an apache file listing and flat textfiles if you wanted. CMS's and all that just pretty things up without making it too difficult.

Here are my two cents.  I have implemented and operated pretty much everything people have suggested.  I have been working in this industry for over 10 years...

- Don't use a CMS unless you really want to over complicate your life.
- Drupal would drive you insane and it will never be exactly what you want.  Avoid it at all costs...
- If you want CMS type features, Wordpress is the right choice for you.  However, you will be forced to setup a server, domain, hosting, database, application, etc, etc...  If you have never done any of this stuff it can be a bit of a mine field.
- If you really want CMS options and don't want to have to worry about hosting, use www.weebly.com.  It is not blog oriented though, so it is probably not what you want in this case.
- If you just want a blog that works and integrates with all sorts of different media types right out of the gate, Tumblr is probably your best option.
- The github suggestion is interesting.  You will not have any of the nice formatting tools like a WYSIWYG editor and such, but if you already use Git, then it might be a cool option.  If you don't already use Git, then this option is not for you.
- I used blogger about 7-8 years ago.  It was OK, but nothing special then.  Maybe it is better now, I dont know...

My most active blog is running on Drupal right now, but that is mainly because I was building many sites in Drupal at the time I created it.  I have built and managed about 5-10 Drupal sites and I can tell you, they are a pain in the @55 to manage.  The code base is always changing and the modules will only ever give you 1/2 of what you expect.  Current blog: http://swillops.com/

I created a simple blog just for fun to try out Tumblr a little while ago and if I did it all again, I would be using Tumblr for blogging.  It is the best option in my opinion.  This was the basic blog I threw together in 10 minutes: http://swill.tumblr.com/

I have created many Wordpress sites as well.  For a blog, this would be my second choice.  It is blog oriented and has nice editors and such.  Only draw back is that you have to manage your own server, hosting and application (unless you use wordpress.com).

PM me if you have specific questions you want answered...

It's really easy to get started.

I was deploying a server at Digital Ocean and I noticed they have instant deploys for Ghost blog, and also wordpress if you prefer to go that route.

Based upon your needs and (inferred) skillset, I recommend WordPress. If you want WordPress to host it, you can be up and running in a few minutes. If you want to host it yourself, it'll just be a few more minutes (most of which will be spent deciding upon a domain name). Many hosting providers are WordPress friendly and provide "one click installs" to get you up and running with a quickness. WordPress is very easy to setup, has a huge user base, and a ton of drop-in extensions already available. It's also easily customizable with the largest library of themes around. You'll be posting your insights for all to read in no time.

- If you want CMS type features, Wordpress is the right choice for you.  However, you will be forced to setup a server, domain, hosting, database, application, etc, etc...  If you have never done any of this stuff it can be a bit of a mine field.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Here are my two cents.  I have implemented and operated pretty much everything people have suggested.  I have been working in this industry for over 10 years...

WordPress is the more or less the only really user-friendly solution, but it's also a security disaster. I use it only because I'm ridiculously lazy.

Thanks for the help so far guys. When I get a chance I'm going to check out Wordpress.

I want to blog about CPTBadAss.

It'd be pretty boring. And mostly ice cream based.

Just for fun.  I would recommend you try the hosted options like Tumblr and Ghost (in a few weeks when they roll out the hosted version).  Maybe even checkout weebly.com just so you have a comparison between managing a 'blog' vs a 'website'.  All of them are free and hosted, so you do not have to setup a server anywhere and install source code or any of that stuff.  It will let you evaluate the types of things that are important to you before committing to actually building something.

I am not saying to not use Wordpress, just that now is the time to try the free hosted options before you take that step...

I've ruled out tumblr. I didn't and still can't take it seriously. But I'll check out Ghost and weebly.
