Gpu dying
« on: Wed, 07 September 2022, 01:19:30 »
Sigh. the ol' 7870xt tahiti downstairs is the dying, it's as fast as a stock 7950 when overclocked.

But now it's throwing up colored lines and such.

Reflow ?

I think it's over-due to replace it and retire the 7870 - they were strong cards when they were released and even with the revamp to the R9 270x.

Watched a bunch of videos, turns out reflow is a lie, there's no going back.

Dug out an ol' hd 6570 which is ~ 1/10 the speed of 7870xt, lolol.  runs SDR movies just fine with good scaling performance.

Looking at ebay, gpu prices hrrrm...  prolly wait for Bfriday .

AMD started dropping prices then Nvidia announced that despite a massive overflow of GPUs they were taking steps to artificially keep the prices high by limiting the sales to 3rd party vendors (EVGA, Gigabyte, etc).. They will be selling off 30 series for years if not just scrapping many of them entirely. As soon as that leaked AMD ramped prices back up. At least we should finally see some good Black Friday deals again.

Also the great sell off from crypto miners hasn't really happened (surprise!).

Actually, surprised and pretty upset that it's dead, yea it's seen alot of use and driven really hard, but given Tp4's cpu cooling tower modification, it's never ran above 65 Celcius, and it had an extra fan over the vrms.

I know I'm planning to update my son's rig soon - more of waiting out to find a steal of deal to replace his RX 580 8GB (was fortunate to snag it for $160 new when MC was selling them off).  Just want to see what all sides do with the launch of the new gens, and if Intel ever fully launches their GPU's.

If you can wait, do so.

Usually this time of year they reach a holding pattern then start dropping as holidays approach. I say usually, but the last few years that hasn't happened due to shortages (covid, mining, stagnation, A.I. research). This year however there's such a surplus I can see them using the holidays as a way to clear out a lot of stock they've now been saddled with. They don't want to just dump it and crash prices but they also need to move it so the holiday sales are the best place to get rid of lots of it in a hurry.  Be prepared, the prices will not be insane deals and they will try and make it look like there's limited inventory but there should be plenty of it. For example tons of select model 3060's but limited supply of anything faster, this way it won't hurt 4090 and 4080 sales and by the time the 4060 drops many will be ready to upgrade again, especially seeing how the 4060 will crush the 3060.

If you skip the holidays though you're probably going to have to wait till summer if you want a deal.

Also for anyone buying an SSD, hold off a bit, prices are expected to be coming down soon.
