How do I get you to call me on my cell phone?

tough cookie question. i rarely call people because it's neither text messages nor emojis.

invite me to your house and either give me an almost correct address or live somewhere really hard to navigate that google maps is unaware of. i'll be forced to call and ask u for directions bc i'll be driving and i don't want to hit things

How do I move beyond keyboards?

there are 2 schools of thought:

1. if an idea/interest festers in your mind long enough, self-inception is imminent and you naturally end up gravitating towards that idea. everything else gradually fades away. if the idea were a keeper, it will keep you mesmerized on its own.

2. throw your money at everything that catches your attention at the earliest chance. return/resell whatever that doesn't stick. expect to lose some, if not a lot of money.

a lot of things can happen here. 1. you can corner yourself into another hobby by "investing" too much money and forcing it on yourself. 2. you can run out of money before finding anything, at which point you can legitimately declare spending money and trying things is your hobby (on top of keyboards, if you still have them). 3. you find something you really like.

of course, i'm paraphrasing

my response may be short and not good because i'm currently on my phone at a casino restaurant and everything is too damn loud.

what kind of purpose? a divine purpose that you're destined for, or a self-made purpose? regardless, self-reflection is the only mean to your end. there's always time to keep trying. steve carell got big in his late 30s. same with chris hardwick. thirty is the new twenty. they keep saying hard work and consistency will pay off, so i choose to believe them. once you figure out what you love, do it as much as you can.

to make friends, first find people you like. then show them your clacks. if you're clackless, brag about your sick magic the gathering collection. if you're magicless, you're sol : ' [

Spam, I've recently been around many people your age.. the 40-50s with children.

I've noticed that they exhibit the same attitude as you.

I don't think it's that they lack direction or stuff to do..

I find that they are looking for a mental "high"

This high is relative..  Maybe eating lobster for the first time, that they could afford it after getting their first job was AWESOME, back in the day...  but 10 years later lobster is just lobster..

At your age, you've experienced the majority of possible potential pleasures. So your "journey" in terms of ENJOYMENT is fundamentally over..  The exploration of JOY, within the HUMAN DESIGN SPECIFICATION has been completed.

We've only evolved to feel "this much" happiness..

THe only few things left which may rank slightly more exciting in terms of "feels" are hard drugs// alcohol// paid sex..

As for making friends..   This is also due to your age..   In the American environment where privacy and space is aplenty,   as long as you have a job,  you don't NEEEEED friends..

Friendships at a younger age was an absolute necessity for many reasons,  mate selection, motivation, synergistic pursuits.

But at 50+,  a salary man is really just waiting for something to kill him, there's not going to be much you haven't seen in _(some form)_.

I recently spoke to a few 60+ people as well..  They predominantly agree with life having come to a standstill at a certain age..

You can choose to do many different-things with your life.. But it will almost certainly not feel like the "high" you've had at a younger age where discovery was a frontier.

How to get from where I am to finding my purpose and doing what I love?  Because I honestly have no idea where to even start.

Also how to make friends??

1. http://www.findyourthingbook.com/

2. Be friendly.

On a more serious note, I think TP is incorrect.

I have found myself being frustrated with my life as it stands, with the feeling that something needs to change. I've kind of always been trying to find my "thing" and have a pretty good idea of what it is, but no idea of how to turn it into a living. I think I'm slowly starting to see a possible path to get there, though. It's still going to require doing things that I don't particularly like, even when I've "arrived", but the ratio of stuff that gives me satisfaction doing vs "sucky" stuff that I just have to do will be much higher than in my current work / home life.

It will involve starting a company, which I never really seriously considered before since I've never considered myself good with finance, marketing, sales, logistics, etc. Personally, I think I'm much more of an inventor / designer / prototyper, but in order to have the freedom to make my own ideas into products and get them to the people that want / need them I have to create the infrastructure to support it. So I have taken an entrepreneurship course, read "The Personal MBA", got to know import / export and tax laws and learnt about online selling and international transactions (since my initial products are most likely too "niche" to get enough sales only in Finland). Also watching interviews with Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, etc. It's taking big chunks of my precious free time, but I think it'll pay off in the end.

Your "thing" may not require this level of risk or commitment, though. Could just mean going back to college, learning a new trade / skill or discovering that you're already in the right job / industry. IMHO, it's very healthy to re-evaluate every few years if you're satisfied with the direction you're heading in professionally and make adjustments accordingly (realistically, too, though. In certain markets at certain times, just having a job at all is better than quitting because it doesn't quite match your "direction").

In the book I link to above, the concept of your "thing" is quite well defined (that thing you do well / easily / happily, that others can't or find difficult or tedious) and the book has pretty good advice on how to find out what it is. Often the people around you already know it more clearly than you do. As in: "I always ask SpAmRaY to do xxx for me, 'cos he's just a boss at doing that, I suck compared to him and he doesn't seem to mind". If you do something well, enjoy doing it and others are willing to pay you to do it, that's a pretty good way to make a living.

I made the mistake of allowing myself to get slotted into a job that I do reasonably well, but don't particularly enjoy. It only partially overlaps my skillset and doesn't overlap my interests. In my case, my ideal job doesn't exist, so I have to create it. Fortunately for many people, their "thing" matches an existing job / career path, but they still have to find the right company / people to work with. Also "ideal" is a bit simplistic, there are usually a range of jobs / tasks that are sub-"things" of your main thing and are quite acceptable, at least for a while.

And in the end it's also important to recognise that while external influences can help / hinder this, ultimately you're responsible for your own happiness. I think you know this already, that the internal is more powerful than the external and you can be "happy" in any circumstance, but it certainly helps if you're doing something that at least feels like the thing you are meant to be doing, what you specifically were made to be doing right now where you are. In other words, being more "completely" yourself.

In my own mind I have a "superhero" analogy for this: What makes any superhero special? It's their unique abilities and the way they use them. Everyone has unique abilities. Therefore everyone is a potential superhero. you just have to find your abilities and use them the right way.

Actually, I think I can summarise the answers for both your questions into:
1. Be yourself.
2. Be yourself.

Good luck and Godspeed on your quest, super-SpAmRaY!

this place ****ing sucks

let's assume that you're right, it does suck

now quit ****ing saying it sucks and go look for good times. some people are thrown into the fun in media res. some are less fortunate

let's keep assuming ****. you are in fact less fortunate. fun isn't happening to you. maybe you're ignoring it. maybe you're too lazy to meet it halfway. but no, let's assume a third fact: that everything and everyone around you sucks and this isn't your fault at all.

lean into your discomfort. branch the **** out. join an org on campus that you hopefully like. orgs encourage social activity. that's probably the easiest way to find fun. there are a lot of cool people in college.  there are people who are best friend material, or at least very close friend material. the ratio is much higher in college than hs or wherever

if that doesn't work out for you, you're an ******* or something idk. lots of self-reflection/self-awareness can help you with that. i didn't become a perfect life coach overnight.
