Sega Rally Revo [Game Review]

Year 2007, SRR was Produced in parallel with Sega Rally 3, of the acclaimed arcade-style racer series Sega Rally.

-Its most stand out feature is the ground deformation system (mud, sand, snow, dirt) which affects the grip and turning ability of both driver and pursuit cars.

-The game's driving engine is purely built on Satisfaction-Physics as opposed to realism.

-The cars are fun, some sticky to the ground, some refuse to change directions, all the trope arcade car styles are represented.

-The livery contains plenty of legendary licensed rally car models.

Console versions only ran up to 30fps on PS3/X360 due to the taxing calculations of the ground effects system on CPUs of the day. It ran perfectly fine 60fps on PC and Arcade PC boards.

Fans of racing games can easily sense the LOVE on part of the developer. There's a great deal of nuances in elevation and camber (horizontal road pitch) changes in the tracks to make each round fun/ interesting/ difficult to master. There are some blind corners, but when you STICK IT just right, the sliding sensation is euphoric.

The AI is reasonable, they bite back only rarely when attacking your insides. The game fully rewards aggressive crash driving. It barely penalizes rear wall collisions on corner exits, focusing players to press as hard as possible. Only front wall collisions result in drastic speed pull back. Car-Car collisions are bumper car style, slight transfer of momentum, but overall glide-like.

PC Glitch. For whatever reason, the main career progression is bugged with severe micro-stutter which does not affect the console version.

To overcome Micro-stutter, in Quick-Race and Time-Attack mode,  Start the game, open menu, select Restart. The game will fully sync, and there will be no frame-stutters for the rest of the race. Restart is very fast, no lengthy load times, so it's a minor inconvenience.

It is recommended that you download a Savegame file to unlock all the tracks and cars to play QR and TA. There is no way to restart Career mode, so it will always play with annoying stutter.

Despite this setback, the game is still very fun, playable.

Interesting observation.

The cars feel like they have alot more Grip @ higher frame rates.

It feels like one can attack a corner with much more conviction at 500fps.

At 60fps, it feels like, you're not really sure where the car is steering towards, and one's instinct for when to countersteer is vastly blunted.

At 500fps, even on a 60hz display, the handling just feels surefooted. On a 165hz display, it's even tighter.

Of course with Tp4 cheapo graphx card, visual fidelity are reduced significantly to hit those numbers.
