It was my birthday so I had the day off work.  Sat round waiting for the courier to bring a hard drive (headphones would have meant missing the doorbell) then fought to fit it and now, 10 hours later, I'm still waiting for it to fill up.  In between the waiting for that I waited for relatives to bring cards and birthday wishes and waited in line to vote.  I guess it's better than being in education and having an exam, but I'll never understand why people like birthdays.

Owch might be a Welsh toponym.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. For me, it's an excuse to do whatever the hell you want.  No one will question you if you say "yesterday was my birthday".  ;D

I hate celebrating my birthday. I've removed it from Facebook so people don't write emotionless and empty Happy Birthdays on my wall.

Is there a more beautiful thing in keyboards than this check? That feeling when you plug in your PCB and run aqua key test and everything lights up as working.

Interesting point, under the paint on the rear plate near the back was edge lots of burrs that were covered by the paint, clearly they didn't mess around when they painted these.

Read up on bicycles as I am planning to replace my bike later this year.

Had my mouth water over the Specialized AWOL Transcontinental.
They have and awesome series about the race from London to Istanbul (a 3100km unsupported "race")

But since that one was an expensive limited edition I moved my eye towards... even more expensive custom bikes like the VanNicholas Yukon and the Santos Race Lite or the more affordable Atropin Randonneur Alfine.

Sigh, the search for an affordable IGH equiped Randonneur isn't easy...
Especially at my size.

You mean for it being stolen? Or?

My current bike uses a Nexus 8 and has served me well for 7 years or so. I want an IGH because I ******* hate derailleurs and those won't survive the daily abuse that I put it through.
Its pretty much breaking down after 7 years of daily service. Repairing the issues will be too costly and not really worth it anymore.

You should be more glad that you live in a country where something like that wouldn't get snatched..
Already had a bike stolen before. Got replaced under the insurance that was on it. That one was a whole lot less expensive.

Some good locks and using your head make all the difference. Besides, over here your chances of having your bike stolen increase as the bike gets cheaper/more generic. Better to have something that stands out.
Still, with between 541,000 to 897,000 bikes being stolen each year on a population of 19 million bikes that's about 5% of bikes being stolen each year.

I'll put a ring lock and a good long chain lock on it and it will be fine.
I'll keep the old bike for more high-risk trips like getting a beer in town or put the fancy one in a secure bike garage.

i ****ing hate derailleurs too. not sure what you mean by them not handling your everyday abuse though. don't you just cycle to work on the well-built roads?

also, isn't an out-of-the-crowd bike more likely to get stolen in NL than a generic opafiets?

There are two types of thieves: Professional teams with vans and opportunity thieves like junkies and drunk students.
The majority is the latter type and a generic omafiets can be flipped for €25 easily in the city.

Derailleurs need a lot of care to keep working or need to be replaced every year.
And since I ride all year round and half the time the bike sits outside the chain and cogs get rusted to oblivion in no time unless you clean and lube them after every ride.

For comparison: my Shimano IGH hasn't had any type of maintenance for the 7+ years that I use it and is still working. Even through long winters with heavy rain, snow and salt.
If I would have given it a simple yearly checkup by the repair shop it would have lasted even longer.

And... well I use it in the city. So sometimes I jump off a curb or transport my girlfriend on the back. I've had other people on there as well so a bike has to be able to withstand +200kg's of weight at times. :P

Derailleurs need a lot of care to keep working or need to be replaced every year.
And since I ride all year round and half the time the bike sits outside the chain and cogs get rusted to oblivion in no time unless you clean and lube them after every ride.
that's not true :p
i've got my xc bike's derailleur and cogs surviving half time on the street in 2009-2015 in central and northern russia. half of the year there's snow and salt, and additional four months it's all kinds of ****. you can't find environment that aggressive in civilized europe :p the bike was first used every day, then became my winter vehicle. i lubed the chain every 100-150 km and gave no **** about derailleur and cogs.
my chain and rear mech were both from Deore series.
Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Was offered to discuss a position which "pays 60-90K". The company has two offices, one in Cardiff and one in Swansea.
Looks suspicious.

Yeah no-one earns that much in Wales.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)
