Post Counts?
« on: Fri, 02 June 2017, 17:32:42 »
When did post counts get reverted? Not that I really care, just curious as to what happened... or is it just me?

(Yes, this tab has been open for quite some time.)

Something broke.

For example the "what did you get in the mail today" thread just duplicated itself (IDK if that is related). That thread was just on page 995 today, then if you go to the next page it goes back to the first page, and starts the thread over, going all the way to page 1990 or something. Hard to explain, but something broke.

See: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=33130.new#new

Chrome is saying there isn't something secure on page 996, but on page 997, it goes back to second page of the thread.

I hadn't even noticed how long that thread got.

Btw, page 996 and 997 load fine for me, so there might be something iffy with your version of Chrome.

i was at like 5550 or something.

But it doesn't even matter since they can just manually set post counts anyway, that was ruined a long time ago.

Yes, there's something funny going on. We're looking into it. As far as I am aware, it was not done on purpose, but we need to speak to the admins who have access to the backend of the site to see if they know the cause.

I don't believe any posts have been lost, just post count being reported incorrectly.

Doubling everyone's post count would probably require a SQL command that'll muck up 'n accidentally delete what's left of everyone's will to live.

27+ billion sounds like a fitting number for my post count

Cubed is so awesome..

Tp4 would have 1.38 Trillion.

Halverson would have 1.5x10^20 posts  :))

Have to ramp up the posting rate again ...

Seems to be kinda proportional.

Something like around 10-15% of posts are gone.

Which, obviously, is a lot more for some people than others.

I'm wondering what mod was drunk moderating and screwed things up.

Surely there are logs? :P  :spam:

Edit: Also wondering if some of the bigger photo heavy threads are too big for SMF to handle. They might need locked then restarted as v2.

There are logs, but nothing in the logs the mods have access to explain this. We think it has to do with the database behind the site, which we as mods don't have access to -- so we have to wait for the admins to take a look, as it's a separate set of logs.

Can someone explain what is happening? I have seen something similar from time to time; each time a different explanation was given. Nothing makes sense though.

The last time postcounts changed (that I recall) was when we changed which subforums counted towards postcount. That's different from what happened this time, because as far as we're aware, it wasn't the specific action of any mod that led to this issue. We don't yet know what the cause was this time, we're hoping once the admins take a look we'll have an explanation.

Has anyone noticed if their total post count overall is the same?

I can't remember what mine was a week or two ago - maybe a large section of posts was archived or moved into an area that does not count towards post count?

my solution from post whoring was to just remove post counts being displayed. People care less about post counts and more about join dates at that point.

What always amazes me is the people who have been members longer than I have that don't have the 25 posts required to post a classified ad when they decide to clear out their old stuff.:D

Lots of people make accounts just to lurk. I suppose it does make it easier to follow threads and such that you're interested in. Personally, I never bother making an account anywhere until I want to participate, but I can see the logic in other approaches.

I think it's just the what did you get in the mail today thread but that'd mean I've posted there 1600+ times so I could be wrong.

Right after posting (not really an issue, someone on that page has an image hosted on that site or something).

Dumps me here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=33130.msg628784#msg628784

Which is page 996 when viewing 50 posts/page.

Also confirmed that it looks like each new reply pushes the place forward by one where you'll land when the page refreshes after posting, OR clicking the 'Last Post' link in Spy.

Having the same issue as dg.

I generally hate all keycaps. Keycaps are for poofs. Real men touchtype on stems. Non-functional artisans are awesome, I use them for the ESC key ... escape is for cowards anyways, real men go frontal assault.

Just curious, who are the back-end admins?

According to the list there's 4 admins and iMav, ashort not being active in over a year. Photo already knows but told me she's waiting on an Admin as well. So I'm guessing rkinze is the only back-end admin?

Just curious, who are the back-end admins?

rkinze, samwisekoi, and iMav I believe are the ones who have that access. ashort may as well, but I don't know that I've ever interacted with him. Not 100% sure which of them is looking into this, but I believe it's iMav.

Photo is more of a front-end admin, and has more crossover with the senior mods. I don't know to what extent, if any, she has access to the backend.

If that's the case my goal is to get to 3380 before then so the post count restore bumps me to 5k.

Obviously the 'What did you get in the mail?" thread has the most replies of any thread on the forum.

Again as I said before I'm betting the database is having trouble due to the size of that particular thread.

I believe so, but it doesn't distinguish between the different areas that the different admins are involved in.

I haven't heard anything, but I've been busy with work recently, so it's possible I missed hearing something. Will check with the other mods, and report back if there's anything new.

I'm wondering if that one's just backed up. I know I've gotten several days of emails all in a block before. Let me do some digging.

I know I've gotten several days of emails all in a block before. Let me do some digging.

I feel like 50% of the time I have that happen.

Every once in a while I'll also get a notification of a post from a few months ago.

Basically, I think the emails have always been a bit broken.

Yeah the counts  are still messed up from when this thread was started.

The most recent deduction that seemed to happen in the last day or two was corrected but not the initial problem from over 2 weeks ago.

I know I've gotten several days of emails all in a block before. Let me do some digging.

I feel like 50% of the time I have that happen.

Every once in a while I'll also get a notification of a post from a few months ago.

Basically, I think the emails have always been a bit broken.

Slightly off-topic for the moment, but email notifications are working for me again

E: also, my postcount still isn't what it was before any of the issues either.

I lost over five hundred posts this time.

Yeah i wanna say I'm still down like 300 or so
I'm still down about 500.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Ripster's ghost has come back to haunt us :spooky

Could it be that certain threads have too many posts and it's causing issues with the database? I know on another forum (different board software) that's a problem over a certain number of posts per thread so they ask users to cap it and create new threads.

My post count has remained the same [edit: wait about 10 posts are missing since last time I visited this thread] but I notice a few others who post in some of the megathreads have had thousands missing. If it were related to the larger threads it might make some sense. Just speculating.

Why blame Ripster?

It's a joke about his attempt to crash the site using a post count vulnerability.

Yeah I just checked to make sure I was right in saying I am down about 300 and that is what it seems to be.

Cool. I was getting close to 4,700 before they all got messed up. I won't be heartbroken if it can't be fixed, but it would be nice.

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

You didn't have over 17K that counted.

I was down ~6K, now it's more like 3K.

Confusion seems like the perfect opportunity for some "cleaver" people to increase its count in the thousands. LOL.

The post counts are CORRECT.  Note, if you had posts counted from a forum that was later changed to not have posts counted towards your total...a recount wipes those out.  They would not get wiped up unless a recount was initiated (which is not part of any regular maintenance task).

Yeah iMav said that it is fixed but with the recount you may have lost posts due to the changes that caused different forums to count for posts and stuff.
