Was just at a coffee shop and the joint lit up including my phone. I believe we were all reprogrammed instantaneously.

Don't think anyone doubts 1984 at this point..

Nope, my flip phone doesn't get any of these alerts. Everyone else's phone blew up at work though.

I admit, the timing does make it seem somewhat sinister, considering we have a despotic, antisocial, inhumane, narcissistic, impulsive, pathologically-lying, short-tempered, unstable, untreated mental health patient in the White House.

But the US government has always had systems in place to warn the public about major emergencies. As technology changes, it's only logical to extend it to those platforms.

Is he trying to pontificate to everyone not following him on twitter?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

You would think, but no. These tests were planned during Obama's tenure in office. The point is basically to make sure that everyone gets an emergency alert on the national level on the off chance something like a nuclear exchange would occur.

And you can't block these tests, or the alerts themselves. The federal government considers the stakes too high if such an alert would be needed.

Well! That's some epic bull****. If there were a nuclear exchange, I don't want to know about it. It's not like I could do anything about it, other than run the other direction from all the headless chickens panicking. Now, a tornado alert is another thing. That's why I HAD emergency alerts turned on. I guess I'll turn them back on if I can't block Trump D Dumpty. sigh

I don't get why everyone has such an issue with the presidential alerts. They've been active for at least the last decade, but I'm not sure when phones first got presidential capabilities. They can be used for any emergency that threatens the US, because the next major war will not be fought with nukes (at least, it's highly improbable).

Hehe, if one person could take down the camera system in Washington I think a team of people can disable presidential alerts.

Not saying I would condone such a thing (I wouldn't), I'm only saying that with the speed of information these days--is it really necessary?

And if the populace deems it necessary, (they probably don't care) could each presidential tweet start with, "My fellow Americans..."?

They can be used for any emergency that threatens the US, because the next major war will not be fought with nukes (at least, it's highly improbable).

Like you said, the EAS has been in use constantly over the years on a more local scale, especially for dangerous weather like tornadoes, wildfires and hurricanes. The ability to warn any necessary locale has already been in place.

But ever since America got great again, we can send out bigger, better and far more presidential (lol) alerts than ever before because we're prepared for EVERYTHING. My real concern is what the Pres constitutes as a National Emergency, if this is indicative of a rising threat, and how selectively the tool will be used. He's declared "National Emergencies" in response to possible meddling in elections :p, global rights abuses and corruption, and also the opioid epidemic. Are these the types of things we will be receiving alerts on? Or is it solely for some kindof nationwide attack - technological or otherwise - like an internet shutdown/blackout?

We've got something like that, but I can only recall it having been used once.
