What's ur boot time.
« on: Wed, 22 December 2021, 15:32:13 »
Tp4 computer epic slow,

From button to physically seeing "start menu", ~24 seconds..

Article from tomshardware, they got sub 5-seconds.

Tp4 only has pcie gen 2.0 x8 on the x16 expansion slot, halving the speed of the gen3 ssd.

I get it around 20, but warming up and all applications launching takes longer, too long, good 2-3 minutes before everything is chugging

"insanity thought"

In theory, Tp4 could put the lowly 1060gpu in the Gen2 x8 slot, and SSD in the Gen 3 x16 slot.

This will gibs full SSD performance, while gimping the gpu ~1-5%  ?

Bah, but can they beat a 516 kB Tandy 1000RL from three decades ago? xD

Desktop:
Without Bios...  7 seconds.
With Bios about 11 or so, I could knock off another 1-2 with some tweaks but then when I need to get into BIOS it becomes a hassle.
I also have a 5 second GRUB boot menu, so about 16 total if I don't press enter or disable the menu.

Laptop:
19 seconds
Also has a 5 second GRUB boot menu, so about 24 total if I don't press enter or disable the menu.

Server:
26 seconds before network shares are available.

Last time I saw one take that long (which was not long ago actually) was a system with two spinner drives, it had two bad SATA cables.
One drive was sketchy as a result, the other (the original boot drive) was wiped clean.

Try some new cables and check your S.M.A.R.T. data, I've encountered a few systems like that and if it wasn't a failing drive it was often a bad sata cable. They're cheap (often free), so it's worth a shot. Just don't expect miracles as new cables will not fix any prior corruption. If it does make a difference, do a refresh retaining your data, or a complete re-install. In either case, do a backup first (don't worry about it when just swapping cables).

2008 was i7 920, NT is still using i7 920 ?

i7 3770k, i think it's more of a Windows issue idk, but my memory sticks and anything I stick in my pce ports burns out super quick. maybe something wrong with the mobo? idk, all i know is i am too poor to get a new one, and that was the same issue 7 years ago so i don't see anything changing in the next 7.

as long as it can run elden ring at low settings i can leave this world content

It does hang on the main/OS hdd for a long time, I am almost certain that drive is starting to fail

c300 ssd, Classic
It's old, it's small, but it keeps right on going.
I also have a 40gb Intel of similar vintage also still kicking in a laptop.

So little storage, so much money...

Most likely a power issue if parts are dying, hard to say PSU or mobo is causing it though, could be both or the psu damaged the mobo.

Ask around, friends/co-workiers/work, with a system that old (but still good), there's a good chance someone has spare compatible parts or newer parts you can get free or cheap.

Search Google for "refurbished pcs" in your town as well as Ebay.
You can score older gen parts pretty darn cheap these days, other than GPUs. Get a used mobo, and a new psu (never buy used psus without knowing the history and it better be high end).

because stupid dell can't boot directly off the nvme ssd, 50 seconds to load grub and 2 minutes for the kernel off the sd card and then 2 seconds to load the rest of the OS from nvme... should really invest one day into a sata ssd for /boot.
my tower is a bit faster at around 20 seconds discounting the 10 sec of GRUB waiting on me to choose what i want to boot.
as for my windows PC, it is my work pc, an HP 4540 with a sata SSD taking about 30 seconds to boot and half a second to open the start menu. crazy that a 10 years old PC with and ssd can do :) and it is a i3-3110m so if your 3rd gen intel is slow, maybe look at getting a ssd and maybe at removing some apps running at startup.

I know mine is around 15 from my NVMe, only thing slowing it down is the boot process of my BIOS since it checks my array on boot which is fortunately sata SSD's so it has sped up compared to when it was spinning rust.

Don't forget Windows cheats.

Cold boot is not actually a cold boot unless you disable Fast boot*, just using shutdown actually causes it to do a hybrid sleep allowing Windows to boot 2-3x faster than it actually does. Funny enough, reboot is an actual reboot but to truly do a cold shutdown you either have to disable fast boot or hold shift and use the menu option to shut down. Then power it back on for a true cold boot.

My desktop is several seconds faster booting Windows than Linux using fast boot (something like 9 seconds including bios) but is high teens without.

*Don't confuse Windows fast boot with Bios fast boot, Microsoft being the jerks they are named their feature the same as the long standing bios feature in order to further obscure what they were doing.

I shut down completely every night and do a cold hard boot in the morning.

~40 seconds

My win menu doesn't even have the fast boot option is it hidden ? The bios has an option.

hangon, this fastboot requires hybernation to be turned on ?

Apparently it's called Fast Start in Win 8 and Fast Startup in Win10, sounds like they got the message about the name being stupid.

It uses/requires hybernation but it works regardless if hybernation is actually enabled or not so disabling hybernation changes nothing. It is enabled by default and the setting is hidden under power button settings (WHY?!).
On Win8 you could do a true shutdown by holding shift when you click shutdown, that option seems to be gone in Win10 unless it's now found under shift-restart. Warning, if running headless beware, shift-restart will bring up the menu, but also close your remote session, you can probably guess how I found that out.

More info...
https://www.minitool.com/news/fast-startup-windows-10-018.html

BTW
The Bios option is completely different, it disables various amounts of EFI/BIOS hardware scanning, good for booting faster but bad if you need it to find your USB keyboard so you can get into bios or want to boot a USB stick so play with it at your peril. You may have to do a bios reset or find an old PS2 keyboard to change it back if you disable all scanning. Some smarter boards will still find a keyboard, some will only see if if in a specific USB port, others will not find it at all. Some offer various amounts of scanning and some are either on or off with nothing in between.

I turned on this "msi fast boot" in bios

It seems to skip checks and post screen , sooo , i can't get into the bios without booting into windows first.   This seems like a hassle , especially if my system borks,  but since it doesn't bork often..  don't know.

Definitely boots alot faster, at least the bios part.

Timed msifastboot a bunch of times just now, 19 seconds to start menu vs 24.

I'm tempted to install their fast boot desktop app,  Though it's probably spyware.

it takes about 25 seconds if you count the time it takes for some of my weirder add-in cards to initialize (the mellanox 10gbe nic is the worst offender, followed pretty closely by my lsi sas card), but once all that's done and the MSI logo pops up on my screen it's about 3 or 4 seconds to the log-in

if it is like any other fastboot, it just skips slower POST tests, like memory that can take a long time if you have loads of it (with memory test my server with 64GB took about 2 minutes to boot, reduced to about 25 seconds with fastboot)
i doubt their app would do much good.

A PS2 Keyboard or linux usb stick (disconnect main drive) can also get you in.

Honestly though, you rarely need (or should) go into bios. The problem is when you do, you often REALLY need to.
