Do you think of yourself as intelligent?
« on: Sun, 20 March 2016, 04:50:28 »
I was thinking of this a few minutes ago, for most of my life, everyone tells me I'm very intelligent, but I have the most difficult time believing that, I don't perceive my self as a fast learner or very intuitive, I struggle at times with math, maybe due to becoming angry with my self due to not understanding a concept as fast as I would like... But I can't really see my self being this very intelligent person as people I'm close to perceive me as.

I struggle to reason with what is a more rational point of view..

When we apply labels such as smart, or beautiful,  they're RELATIVE terms.

Some people are smart only vs a cardboard-box,  some females are only beautiful vs that same cardboard box..

In my personal experience.. I find just about everyone is equivalently intelligent given equivalent economic class and equivalent age..

This seems to hold true until the age of 60, whereby the continued acquisition of new knowledge and information generally stops for most individuals.

The Age is the base time meter to acquisition.. You need TIME to learn.. how old you are represents approximately how much time you would've had..

Economic class is an effective characteristic for younger people.. Just as an example, some kids have to go out and work very physical part time jobs at an early age..   A child from wealthier families would have more opportunities to work on their mental developments.

If you're worried about not being as smart as someone expects you to be..

Hrrrm.... I suppose my point is,  adjusting the gauge by which you're judged is important.

On the Other front:

Scientifically, there exists people SEVERAL standard deviations out in terms of the size of their hippocampus (brain area for memory)..

These people are the ones like Sheldon on TV, with an eidetic memory..

We know for a fact many of history's greats have this ability..

Such as Von Neumman (atomic bomb/math/physics)

(rumored) Elon Musk, notice his abilities to cross so many scientific fields, characteristic of that ability,  Von Neumann was able to do the same thing..

In my opinion is that if you doubt yourself and your smartness then you are smart. Since people that go and objectively look at themselves will be better then people who think they are smart and don't question it (vice versa for people that think they are dumb).

I agree with tp4tissue. It's all relative. In college, people use to call me "smart" because I had what other people considered a difficult major and I did well at it.  It didn't make me smarter than anyone else, it just made me good at that subject. If I had another major, I'm sure I would struggle because it's not something I'm good at.

In my opinion, everyone is better or worse with something than someone else. Everyone is smart at something.

So, in other words, I'm an idiot.

I've not read any replies, this is just my thoughts on the OP.

Overall I think of intelligence like stats on a video game - everyone has 100 points, if they're spread out fairly evenly you get someone who's perfectly competent but nothing spectacular but if you overload one area at the expense of another you get someone who seems amazing yet is retarded at the same time.  This could be an Autistic genius with no social skills or an artistic genius who forgets where they put everything or someone with amazing people skills who couldn't do a logic problem if their life depended on it.

Most people are relatively balanced so those who are lucky enough to be strong in a category that's appreciated by the society they live in with the other categories not low enough to inhibit them will be thought of as intelligent.

Me?  I'm pretty good on the things that are appreciated so am seen as intelligent, but I'm quite capable of cracking a joke about dying to someone on their first day back at work following a week off for the death of their parent, which by my standards makes me a dumbass.

I'd say I'm pretty smart with science, math, and other general stuff like that

as far as street smart goes, not at all.

Generally I consider myself to be intelligent but nothing really above average.

Sometimes I do things and I feel pretty confident in myself, then turn around and seem to trip on flat ground.

I think this explains things for me as well:

Like mentioned, labels like intelligent are relative terms, i compare myself to others that are vary intelligent in my eyes, so even though i'm told that i am quite often i dont always believe it.  Though the reason most think i'm intelligent because a large amount of people my own age are not into things like engineering, home automation etc... etc..  I acctually feel kind of self conscious being called smart, i feel that if i show my interests and knowledge in my interests off that i'm just looking for recognition when i'm really not.

I tend to judge myself on failures which id say is one of my main issues.
