I'm down for a few games. I can hold my own in agar.io. How do we find the same lobby though? I thought it was random.

I learned today that as simple as the game looks. Staying in the top ten for more than 10 minutes is actually pretty technical and probably impossible without at teammate.

Possible if everyone is terrible..

But when them clans get in ...  it becomes unpossible... you will be chiseled down, stripped, and absorbed.

I had never heard of this game until I saw this thread. It's pretty fun, although I'm not sure I understand it all. I've figured out how to use splitting to catch up to smaller opponents and eat them, but what's the purpose of W?

I just spent an hour playing this. My best run was 37 minutes, with a top spot of 6. It is a good way to pass some time. If I'm around again I'll hit you up for some team play.

...but what's the purpose of W?

I have no idea! I came to ask that very same question. I used space a lot, but no W.

If you eject mass into a virus, it will eject a puck into an enemy and pop them assuming they're close enough. It's useful for bringing down enemies much larger than you.  You can also use it to share mass with teammates.

Good to know!

Man, people that play this are some of the most offensive, racist ****bags around. Judging by their names anyway. Why do people lose all humanity when anonymity is involved?

62,623 is quite hard to achieve...

We would need to be extremely careful not to create any 22,500 cells at any point, other wise it auto splits and resets..

We'd also need to capture very efficiently

And alot of luck with large enemies moving towards us..

You have to understand.. it's mostly "kids"..   kids are inherently racist douchbags..  because they've not yet fully grasped the concept of co-existence and sympathy.

So, once you give them anonymity to say whatever at all..  it' all comes out.

OMG... I'm still watching our protege...  they're playing a loss game

He's only 12000 strong between all of them..

out of our 20000...

they got the basic concepts right...  but they're highly wasteful,  and not utilizing virus splits.

I'm learning the ins and outs but it's hard to get very far by yourself.

Yesterday I tried spending most of the time split in at least two cells. You get around faster, and AFAIK you slow down shrinkage, but it makes you a tastier target to more players. I never got chased around so much as then.

Also, can anyone tell me how the game decides when your cells will rejoin each other? Is it strictly time-based from your last split?

I believe you will rejoin once one of your balls has reached a certain size that is larger than the other. I could be wrong though..

It's strictly time based, the larger you are when you split, the longer it takes to join back together. I'm pretty sure it's a linear time scale as well.

The MERGE cooldown time is 30 seconds plus 2.33333% of the cell's mass

Just had my best run ever.

Funny how once you get onto the leaderboard people start coming after you.

But I have to say, most of the top players don't really know how to use/guard against viruses.

But I have to say, most of the top players don't really know how to use/guard against viruses.

How DO you use and/or guard against the virus? I tried to use one by shooting off some mass into a virus to create the virus pucks, or whatever they are, but I must be doing it wrong, cause it didn't do anything other than make me smaller. I got a my person best in that game so it wasn't all bad, but I'm still not so good either.

Shooting viruses:

If you fire into the virus via the {w} key,  the virus will get BIGGER..  once it reaches max size, it takes ~7 shots..

It will SPLIT in the direction of your LAST ball shot into it..

If the virus hits the enemy,  it will pop the enemy.. and break him into many pieces..

Eating viruses:

IF YOU, are in 16 pieces,   any of your pieces that are LARGER than the virus,  can consume the virus.. it won't blow up, because you can not exceed 16 pieces total

it has to be 16.. that is the maximum number of pieces you can carry..

the smaller pieces which are smaller than the virus will just go right through the virus.. unharmed.

Ugh. When players just a little bigger than you chase you around as if they are going to catch up with you you, and they're not even big enough to use splitting to catch you. What's the point? You're not winning, you're just annoying me. If you do this, you're the worst kind of person.

Ugh. When players just a little bigger than you chase you around as if they are going to catch up with you you, and they're not even big enough to use splitting to catch you. What's the point? You're not winning, you're just annoying me. If you do this, you're the worst kind of person.

well,  there are bad players for sure..

But chasing is a valid strategy if you know that that sector has other players about the same size as you

so if you chase a smaller guy towards that area,  he might make a wrong turn,  meet a large guy, turn around,  and you eat him.

It's usually not worth chasing though, u are right.

I had some quite time tonight. I had a pretty good run (for me, don't judge). Pizza guy showed up near the end and messed with my mojo.

Joining strangers is hard..  basically anyone who's playing with a name like W= Team..

and as long as he's in the TOP 10,  his skill level should be OK-ish..

But Ramage and I both have unique names,  and we're among the highest tier of players..

So,  it's anyone's guess in the end..    There is always a risk with teaming up with a stranger..

If anyone wants to get a real group together, a friend of mine figured out how to setup a private server, so we could have a GH only game, if anyone is interested (Sorry if someone has already thought that up and done it, I just thought I would suggest it, in case we want to do that!)

From what he told me, it's pretty hacked together ATM, but I think he's working on getting a simple client going for it, or at least easy to follow documentation for how to do it. I'll talk to him about it later today (it's 1am, so some time in the afternoon)

I was playing 1v1 with him and it worked pretty well. I'm not 100% sure how he sets it up, but he may scale the size of the world to the number of players. Also, we could totally get 200 together!

I was talking to my friend about it today. He confirmed that the world size is indeed scaleable, so we can have as many or as few people as we get, and change world size accordingly. Apparently, you can also change the value of each mass scattered around the map, so that might be fun to mess around with. I'll (hopefully) post instructions for a private server on this thread tomorrow, and I'll probably leave a server up on my PC for a while, with instructions on how to connect to it. My connection should be fast enough to handle it.

ALSO,  the map should be round... LOL

I don't know if I can do that without making some major changes to the source code. I'll be sure to ask tomorrow though!

But to do that in a spherical style would be craaaazy.  You'd almost be limited to a cylindrical wrap like the Civ games.  Still would be fun!

I think the spherical style is better,  because it gets rid of the -Pinning- aspect of the game..

Which i think is non-essential..   because it favors the Existing LARGE cells too much.

Spherical would also open up the necessity for larger teams maybe 3 to 4 people..

Oh I agree that spherical would be better, but how would you project that on a flat space on the screen (same issues as map projections)?  Cylindrical would work much better in that sense.  And would still get rid of *corner* pinning.

well

cylindrical gets rid of 1 player cornering

but it still has 2 player cornering @ 45 degree pins from left and right against the top edge.

Sphere would require 3 players for a pin..   This means  2 man teams won't have such a significant advantage..

The issue right now is,  Large 2 man teams are incredibly hard to defeat.. once they're formed. 20k sizes.

You don't actually need to handle projection because the map doesn't have to exist in real 3D space. Just draw the map until you reach the edge, then start drawing the opposite edge seamlessly. Think of it as infinitely "tiling" the map.

Absolutely correct.  I forgot how small the view window is in relation to the massive size of the entire map.  :thumb:  It would totally work with basically negligible distortion.

It would make the game all about constant "hunting" not hoping to get lucky with a wall pin. But at the same time, pinning 10 smaller players in a corner with 30k mass is pretty entertaining.

I hate chasing. I'm not talking about short-lived pursuals, I'm talking about the long-term following a smaller cell around hoping that they are forced into a corner or against another large cell. It's just a jerk move and I feel like it ruins the game.

So I've adopted a new strategy to deal with chasers.

If you chase me, and don't let up, I will seek out someone big enough to eat us both and lead you right to him. I'll die, but I don't care. You already ruined my round so I'm going to ruin yours.

hahahaha..

This is not the right strategy to get swole..

Basically, don't long chase unless you're close to the corner..

It's better to just eat dots and catch smaller prey

Essentially, you shouldn't always wait for the largest prey possible

The reason is,  if you do that,  it takes longer,  than if you ate 2 smaller prey in the time it takes you to find the large one..

Since it's overall unpredictable who, how big, or where you meet..

It's better to get what's in front of you , than possibly nothing at all..

So, I'd say 1/3 ur size,, even 1/4 is worth the risk,  if you're in a very sparse zone.

You find a rhythm eventually..

Watch your diameter..  it has to be a bit more than 2x the size of your target for you to SPLIT (spacebar)  and eat him..

The split will happen in the direction your mouse is point.. not necessarily the direction you're currently moving in.

yeah, that I have figured out, but I never seem to last long after I split.  Always get eaten shortly after.

After you split..

You will be moving as fast as your largest ball,  so FASTER than when you were 1 large piece.

Use that speed to get away.

Basically,  if a larger guy shows up at the corner of your screen, and he's coming at you,  DON"T got near him at all.

Start heading as far away from him as possible..

If the guy is more than 4x your size.. he probably won't eat you, but he still might if he's playing with a partner.

So I was playing Agar this afternoon with the nickname "njbair" (creative, I know...).

Anyway, I saw someone named gh. I wondered if it was someone from here. Then I saw someone named hhkb, and even though I'm not a huge Topre fan, I threw them a W. Then I saw someone named "njbair noob" so I W'd him and let him eat me a few times.

I see a "gh" on there all the time. They usually eat me too. But not in a nice friendly way. Just in the regular, I'm better than you way.

the Score is max score reached,  that is not the current mass.  Together we might have been more than 37,000   but not much more..   we basically cleared out most of the players in this game instance..

We were a little too aggressive..  I think if we slowed down.. we might be able to farm more mass from people, when they don't give up and quit.

So, are these blobs persistent when not actively playing or does the game continue and other players become a threat? Only read the Wikipedia but it didn't explain this aspect of the game.

Each game is -an instance-

There is no persistent objective.

THERE IS  however facebook linked "LEVELS"   which lets you increase your starting mass, if you join via your facebook account.

So,  if you're lvl 50 in facebook, you start at 50 mass  rather than 10..  but I think 50 mass is the max starting..

Let's say it says there are 30,000 players playing in the selected region NA, Euro, Demikland, Sifoland, etc..

So,  each instance is between 200-250 players..   if that instance drops below a certain amount,   it will be aborted and all remaining players will be bounced to a more populated instance..

Your mass will decline automatically if you just sit around and not eat..

So the total mass in the server is balanced by prorating the larger players faster than the smaller players.

If you got 5,000 units of mass,   you will lose around 10 mass per second..  This is alot because moving is very slow for you.

That 's why team play has an advantage,  it allows people to move more quickly and integrate faster.

There is now a "Party Mode" on the drop down menu next to where you input your Name.

You click it,  and click -Create party-  then you copy and paste the link over skype ..

Before this was available,  it was done via f12 and manually type in the server instance

I find it beyond annoying when I'm in the middle of a game and the whole board just freezes and you have to drop out and restart. It is the second time this happened to me. Is this because too many people quit the board?

IT IS SO AGGRAVATING!

Yea that's one possibility..

Also, if they need to bounce you to a different machine in the data center, that could also happen.

I assume that is what happens. People give up and drop when someone is totally dominating and then ultimately there aren't enough players and the board just stops. Last night I was at a pretty good score when it froze up. I was bummed. When I moved to a new board someone was generating bot players all over the place. It made it real easy to feed once I figured out what to look for. That was a nice bonus, I guess.

Did you guys notice a new decay behaviour?

When teaming, instead of a synergy, now there is an anti-synergy behaviour, where through W'ing, you lose a lot of the total mass (like a significant amount, without losing any mass to others. Found a partner at around 1000 mass, although we should have been 5k each after the conquest, we were left with 400's, I sacrificed my blob to my partner and left)

I've also noticed big blobs starting to decay rapidly (all of these in the last 5-6 hours)

I haven't noticed this but yesterday I experienced a glitch while playing in Experimental mode. My mass was shrinking really quickly, even at around 30 mass I started shrinking at 1 per second, all the way down to the minimum 10. I had to close the tab and open a new one to fix it.

Also, the last few days it seems like finding a willing team partner is getting harder and harder. Maybe it's just different on the weekends...

I think they are live experimenting, rapid dividers have disappeared after the issue I mentioned, solo-ing started being more rewarding, it's pretty boring (it might be why you couldn't find a partner, since people likely adapted to the new dynamics, or the experimental ones for that matter)

Spent 30 minutes in the leaderboard solo a while ago, it was the most boring game I played, I was relieved when someone finally pwned me :)

No changelog entries either, but something has changed as there are no live previews before the first game

The game stopped being fun, but I'm still addicted, it's bad

well the stupid game definitely punishes W's now

it's too painful to play, previously the game was about friendship and trust, currently it's the opposite, it's more about pain, loneliness, friendship being punished and not being able to communicate the situation

As far as I know you've always lost 20% of your mass per W. That was one of the first things TP4 taught me like a month ago. Efficient play means never using the W key except in emergency situations.  The trick is to break yourselves over viruses or split directly into your partner.  Splitting is 100% efficient and virus breaking (although scary) adds additional mass to your system which you can feed into your partner.

How does tp4 know so much about the internals of the game? I haven't seen numbers like that posted anywhere.

That's a good question. I think he just field tested it although I'm not totally sure. We've done field testing recently to figure out things like minimum size for virus breaking or minimum size to pick up a w drop. I don't think people post the numbers because knowing them gives you a distinct advantage.  The W mass loss is definitely not common knowledge because we see teams all the time on the top who still use that method and they never stay on top.

I just did some browsing, it looks like they've increased the mass loss even further when you use the W key. I think that's awesome! I'll have to do some testing to figure out the actual percentage though.

Hrrrmmm....

It seems  Each ejection cost 18 mass,   each ejected mass is 14 mass value (when absorbed).   so 77.778 % efficient..

Well, the history part is:

This is how ol'school Asians stayed warm in the winter,  because the majority of buildings in Asia didn't have central heating until recently..

I am literally rolled in my comforter w/ arms sticking out and typing forward into my laptop,  Air-conditioner on too high. it's cold here....

They know!! On a serious note, have they fixed the bot problem? Last time I tried playing it was impossible to beat the bot based teams.

Man..  Ramage was right.. The botters totally make certain instances unplayable.

Essentially this is how botting works.

They sign up at some agar.io bot website.

Then the site supplies the bots which will login to the same game that you're playing. and feed you

Now, here's the problem..

--- Each instance of the game has a maximum number of players limit.

---  EACH botters take up something like 30 player slots to bot,

--- --  if there are 3 botters,   that is 100 player slots taken up, which means,  there could only be 100 real players, the rest are the bots to feed the 3 botters..
------  Now, it's impossible to beat the botters,  because there is not enough units in the general crowd for you to get big quick enough to catch the botters.

No matter how good you are,  you cannot beat the botter, because each player count is too low.

Even if you manage to get to a large size,  you can not hold onto the lead, because the botters can gather resources faster than you can travel across the screen

sigh...........

Ya that's why I have taken a break from playing until it gets fixed.  I found it to be impossible to play well.  I don't understand why the creator doesn't implement a basic captcha
