Someone stole our stuff.
« on: Wed, 16 March 2016, 18:39:23 »
Welp, someone broke into our temporary stoarge unit and stole lots of ****. I don't know if all my keycaps and keyboard were taken yet, but our TV consoles, my step fathers medals, consoles, and generally tore **** up and everything is all ****ed up.

Hopefully they didn't take all my keyboard stuff...We're going to go through everything tomorrow to see what was taken and send that over to the insurance company.

Ugh, that sucks indeed. Sorry to hear that. Fortunately they are insured but still, some sentimental stuff are irreplaceable. What type of storage units are you using?

they just broke the lock and opened it up I guess.

my step fathers medals,

My uncle was a multiple-decorated WW2 Air Force hero, and someone stole his medals from my cousin's house. That is about as low as you can go.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

Never drive to the storage unit in ur Weekend car..

Always take the ****tiest car..

And for the first few weeks,  make friends with the guy out front..  He's actually the guy tipping off the thieves as to who to steal from.

You want to make sure this storage unit guy thinks you're some loon, storing absolute garbage..

Depends,  the Snitches are usually quite versed in old stuff that may be worth money..

You want to make him think you're storing used kitty litter..

Also,  I can't stress this enough.. don't LOOK GOOD on the days you go..

LOOK as Unmade and UGLY as possible..   there's alot of strategy to this.. People devalue ugly people upfront using an exponential function..

The uglier you look,  the more likely they'll think your stuff is worth ****..

This is not the time and place to impress.

That sucks :(

I hope you are able to resolve the situation without loss of keyboard amenities!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Some people right next to us had their unit also broken into, but they luckily didn't have anything of value in theirs, from what I heard, just christmas decorations, etc...

Well of course that happened, because it'd be highly suspicious if only 1 single locker was broken into.. that would mean the information for -the goods- was highly targeted..

Which would tip off the insurance company as to the scam..

They're all in on this together..

They're crooks from the very beginning..

The odds of that are next to none.  I doubt the person even knows it's worth anything and, if it did pop up, people would know pretty quick (like selling painted Warhammer figures online) and they'd be a dumb, caught thief.

I agree, but if they were to search and find that they do have value.. and only to this keyboard community, they may not know they are one off and get caught. So, I would not totally dismiss it, more if we know which ones were the one offs that were there.

Dustin's Unholy Grail mummy was one of them, and a Wine-o mummy (I'm not sure if this was a one-off or not, but I think it is)

And my first artisan, a Steel BBV2.

Live and let on, I guess. Sucks that those two are lost though, not just for my self but for the communities sake also. :(

Damn that blows. DUG is one-off but I think there are more Wine-Os, maybe 1 more MX and 1 or 2 topre.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

I may have bought your collection off of craigslist.  I have the original shipping box from a ctrlalt order and an invoice for an HHKB that came with it.  Both have a name on them.  Please PM me your name and let's see if this is a miracle.

O___O The fact that you're coming through with this is awesome. Please tell us you also still have some info from the seller if this is the case.

Don't worry, he will get his items back regardless of whether I get my money back.  I'm an adult, work a full time job and make plenty of money to buy senseless crap.  To a 16 year-old with 2200 posts on this forum, this is his hobby and his life.  I don't go to meetups and enter to win crazy rare raffles for artisan keycaps.  I think this stuff is cool,  but it's not my life.  So, of course, I will be more than happy to return this stuff to its rightful owner.  I have the seller's first name, phone number and address and I hope that giving information to the police will help get back his dad's medals.

*x-post from the subreddit*

UPDATE: I have given /u/Air_tree's belongings to my local police department handling the case. They already had a case number for his family's burglary and with the detailed description of the stolen goods from the family, the police told me they had enough evidence to get a search warrant for the seller/thief's house. Air_tree's family is driving to my state tomorrow to get his stuff back. Hopefully the police come up with the rest of the stolen goods. The police asked me to compile all correspondence with the seller/thief and Air_tree to further strengthen the case.

I just want to say that regardless of the amount of gold, gifts, and praise I have received, it's not all me. Without the forum members of geekhack and redditors of /r/MechanicalKeyboards, I would have had no idea I had stolen goods. Those artisans could have been gone forever if certain users offered to buy them instead of letting me know they were stolen. So for that, I thank you. Geekhack, we did it.

The odds of this happening is just... Wow.   Great job mind funeral, I am sure Air Tree feels better now.  :thumb:

Also I remember someone stole the outside AC unit to my local church where my scout meetings happen, and the value of the copper in the unit was like 200$(that is what they think the thieves were after) and the church had to spend like 2000$ to replace the whole AC system in the building since they were no longer making the one they stole.  ****ing thieves, not caring about anyone but themselves.  I doubt they even pause to think about the consequences or impact on the life of the person they are stealing from.  >:D

Fantastic news, and great community spirit shown by mind_ in particular! :)

But seriously this is an incredible story. I'm not sure if you're going to pursue this any further air_tree, but if you do, I hope you catch the bastard responsible for this.

And then laugh in his face when you tell him one of those caps is worth x3 what he sold the whole package for.

This is the kinda stuff that makes me glad that reddit and geekhack aren't 100% segregated. If it weren't for overlapping users, who's to say this would've been caught?

Kudos to mind_funeral for being a mature adult with all this, I'm sure there's plenty of people out there who would've become a ghost as soon as they heard what the collection was worth (stolen or not), sad as that is to say. You said you're new to the mech game, but I think you're about to get one of the warmest welcomes to these communities that's ever been seen. ;D

This reminds me of the books I read as a kid, Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators. The main hero, Jupiter, would use his network of kids to track someone down. He called.5 friends who will call 5 more friends. Except that this is more exciting than some fiction. He he.

I already posted in the reddit thread, but this is amazing new.  Congrats air tree on getting your stuff back and catching this guy, and huge props to mind_funeral for doing the right thing.  :thumb:

This is the kinda stuff that makes me glad that reddit and geekhack aren't 100% segregated. If it weren't for overlapping users, who's to say this would've been caught?

There's obviously a bit of a rift between the communities, but I do think it's blown out of proportion more often than not.  I browse both regularly, and know many others that do.  And while redditors have done things that make me facepalm pretty hard, geekhackers have done just as ridiculous and stupid things.  Never really understood why we don't just all accept that each community is going to have its good and bad, ups and down, but maybe that's just me.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  I know this has been discussed ad nauseum and is a slight deviation from the topic at hand, but it almost seems like this is something that's perpetuated by bringing it up more so than by actual issues.

Oh yeah, I use both as well. I don't think it's as bad as some say either, I hope my post didn't come across that way. As you mentioned, it's just a bit of a rift, we're not hitting gang-warfare status yet.  :))

But hey, maybe this will do some good for both communities, coming together like this over our mutual love of keyboards.

Update: Gulfport police have told us to us to wait around for the next couple of days while they progress with the case, so there will be a bit of a delay in getttng everything back.

That's quite the trip! Hopefully the police recover even more of your stuff in the meantime to make it really worth it. Feels like they could probably ship your keyboard stuff to you though instead of making you drive for 18 hours  :p

But shows you how far someone will go to steal stuff. Either they got it from someone else or go far enough so that they are not local to the area they are robbing.

Unless I missed that the storage unit was in the town this was listed in craigslist and OP moved.

If you go a few posts back you'll see airtree said that was the town they were in but they travelled.

My uncle was a multiple-decorated WW2 Air Force hero, and someone stole his medals from my cousin's house. That is about as low as you can go.

Just why...

****in thieves, had our old storage unit stole from before, lost 50k in wielding and general shop equipment

What kind of locks were you using? After watching various lockpicking talks and channels like these it's made me vary wary of regular off the shelf locks, not just for picking but also things like durability and protection from drills, bolt cutters and such.

Lock type is very important but the reality of the matter is a thief can get into any lock.  My dad uses cylinder locks on the storage units he rents out.  They can't be bolt-cropped, but if the thief has enough balls, they can drill the lock out.

Woo, big news guys, we just got off the phone with the police and we found out the guy on craigslist who was selling the keyboard was not the guy broke in our storage unit, the guy on craigslist got it as payment for installing windows 10 on a computer that we had in our storage unit, and the guy who got the keyboard as payment for installing windows 10 gave the police the information of the guy who stole all of our stuff and is in a jail cell right now.

The guy who did it has a long record of breaking in storage units, a whole list of **** on his record too.

He ended up getting arrested for something else not related to our stuff.
