Share software that makes your life easier.
« on: Mon, 14 March 2016, 13:23:07 »
I'll begin with the best screenshot software.

ShareX
Sharing has never been easier.
Take a screenshot or a screencast, have it uploaded and get the URL
copied to your clipboard with a single hotkey.

Spacemacs, because Emacs makes everything easier, and Spacemacs takes it to an even higher level of awesomeness.

Emacs is my editor, my browser, my mail reader, my RSS/Atom reader, my IDE, my shell, my window manager. Among other things.

Spacemacs is awesome although I'm not fully grasping it. I'm a heavy vim user, so it still feels a bit weird in places.

Python has made my life considerably easier. I have so many tasks that can be done more effectively using automation, that I find myself writing dozens of python scripts, sometimes even small libraries, to automate stuff.

Vim is the only text editor that I use. I even refuse to use graphical editors. Once you get vim in your muscle memory, you will constantly find yourself pressing motions and commands even in your e-mail and being frustrated for it to not work. So I made it so that I can send text from my OS (OS X service) to vim and back (via the clipboard).

SPSS is really really awesome for quick data analysis. It's like Visual Basic for statistics: it's a bit stupid and limited in ways (like it's syntax), but it's a small cost considering the extreme productivity you get for it. I also use R and R can be nice for some things, but I find myself always coming back to SPSS.

Tmux is what I use day-in-day-out. Makes my life a lot easier.

Plain text files and Tab Separated Values (not CSV). I recently ditched todo apps, Word, even Latex for easy duties. Plain text files can be processed by everything you throw at it, so you are no longer limited to slow software (like Word) or to limited software. If you are missing features, just write a script or use unix tools (like sort and grep) to process text files. Really, the UNIX-way is difficult to learn (like sed/awk), but once you get the hang of it, it'll make you really productive.

Dropbox is where I store almost everything (except for really really personal stuff.. you never know when **** breaches). I have my vimrc there, color schemes, PDFs. I even pay for it. It works SO WELL across ALL devices I use, I have trouble using anything else. I WANT a filesystem and that is exactly what Dropbox offers: just files and directories.

Affinity Designer is the most awesome vector graphics app ever. I'm used to Adobe Illustrator but it is so.. slow and crappy in the UI and how you manipulate graphical objects, that I went looking for something else. Tried a lot of apps and always went back to Illustrator. But then I found Affinity Designer, the first app that I've been using for almost half a year know and never felt I missed something from Illustrator.

I would refuse to work in an office using windows without alwaysontopmaker, it's such a useful function I don't understand why it's still not built in.

This looks incredibly useful. I can't even begin to express my rage when I open those applications at work that take a full 2 minutes to load and have so many splash screens that steal window focus at random points throughout. Basically cripples the computer for the entire duration.
My company must use this when they push Flash updates. Because, no matter what you're doing (web conference, screensharing, rushing something out the door), this company installer will MINIMIZE EVERYTHING and steal focus.

The worst.

I really wish they would just dump Flash. Or at least just save time and bundle infections with it.

I was curious as to what this was and looked it up before realizing it was Mac only and now I'm super sad. Looks like an awesome piece of software and it's only $50?! That seems crazy cheap  Thanks for mentioning this will definitely be following it for a windows version!

I've used Inkscape for webdesign for a couple of years almost exclusively, but there were always these typical quirks or annoyances. Tried it for print design, but for print design I really hated it. Made me switch to Illustrator CS2 back in the day. Inkscape has the most beautiful default color palette though.

Breaks tons of **** for me, blocks site analytics like New Relic. It's trash but I understand why people like it. It's a shame the web has come to this.

On topic, most things have already been mentioned that I use. I really like Alfred for an OSX Spotlight replacement.

Also, The Silver Searcher has been gaining tons of traction at work: https://github.com/ggreer/the_silver_searcher

But really, if you know sed, grep, and awk you're even better off. But ag is damn fast. Like ludicrous speed.

Adblockers come in many flavors, find what works for you. They all can break things and one misplaced tag by a web designer and all sorts of oddities can happen as well. I've seen at least one news site that wrapped their ad around the text of their news articles. Not sure if it was on accident or not, but it was later fixed.

I actually run a bunch of protection (and used a ton of others):
Adblock Plus or Ublock origin (depends on the site and how I feel)
Better Privacy - kills super cookies and regulates flash and java cookies (something your browser does not do well)
Cookie Whitelist - more control over regular cookies.
Web Of trust - site ratings

Basically an advertiser might see me on a site they have ads on, but they are not tracking me elsewhere. For a while I use Umatrix, and while really really powerful, it takes a lot of work to maintain and get it setup to where it works for you. I also run Linux, giving me even more protection from the BS that goes around.

I'll begin with the best screenshot software.

ShareX
Sharing has never been easier.
Take a screenshot or a screencast, have it uploaded and get the URL
copied to your clipboard with a single hotkey.

I personally like Screenshot Captor for my best screenshot software.  And I like Easy Screencast Recorder to do my screencasts, though I don't do many, so my needs are few.  My favorite thing about the software is that it is supported and updated, and the developer really engages with any problems or suggestions.

Custom keyboard layout with a lot of useful stuff under AltGr. Don't have to remember codes, go to charmap or use menu options so much any more. This is useful in languages that use different quotation marks than English, for example.

What do you guys suggest for me? I work as an Allstate Insurance Estimator. I do insane amounts of copy / pasting, and have to use slow web based software to get quick blocks of text like Unavailable/discontinued. Similar item provided.

I was using my Pok3r for work so I had those programmed in and several macros designed for 1 button alt tab, alt d, ctrl a, ctrl c (copy url real quick).

I know that Autohotkey is probably my ticket but are there any other tools for better copy paste features in web pages, etc? I use Firefox.

I'd love to be able to speed up web page loading time somehow. I've optimized my coax into the house, cat7 cables, arris modem w/ 24 channels (on 150mbps connection lol), ac1800 router, as well as a custom built pc with 16gb 2400mhz / 4790k / ssd.

I have adblock installed in Firefox but any other tips welcome.

That's the real issue with productivity software nowadays why I truly dare to argue that it is slower than what we had on the 286 in DOS... most software require some sort of online activity nowadays. Or you NEED internet to do your work. Not e-mail per se, just software in the browser.

4.4 ghz and evo 212 cooling lol. I didn't even try to push it any further because it's been really good as is. Do you think I could push a lot further? I don't believe it gets very hot. I'll have to run a temperature monitor.

Someone apparently went up to the great philosopher Wittgenstein and said "What a lot of morons people back in the Middle Ages must have been to have looked, every morning, at the dawn and to have thought what they were seeing was the Sun going around the Earth, when every school kid knows that the Earth goes around the Sun", to which Wittgenstein replied "Yeah, but I wonder what it would have looked like if the Sun had been going around the Earth?"
