Alcohol was a mistake.. you don't intend to make anything which tastes foul..

Booze lucked out in the sense that it alcohol, a secondary biproduct gets people high(drunk is a form of high)

So we kept making this stuff..

But in the end..  the formula continues,  make awful putrid liquids,  call marketing, , here sell this..

I met up today with Nubbinator to celebrate the promotion at work and drink beer.  The good guy that he is surprises me with 4 Crowlers (2 from Riip and 2 from Gunwhale).  We hit up The Daily News Cafe in Carlsbad for breakfast, headed over to Pizza Port for a pint since they open early, then hit up Barrel Republic to get several small tastes from their 40 plus beers on tap to pour yourself.

Once home, I decided to start with the Hopped for Mama Farmhouse IPA.  I can see why he chose it.  This is a wonderfully hopped, but not overdone west coast ipa.  There is a smooth but spicy start with a light yeast flavor.  The aftertaste is also of yeast, but with a pleasant papaya flavor that lingers.  Definitely a beer I can recommend.   :thumb:

Froze my butt off yesterday to pick up Trillium's 4th Anniversary brew, a triple IPA called Streets. The wait in line was worth it, though, since I drove home with a case of the stuff. Didn't crack one open last night, but I think I'll have one tonight.

How shippable are beers? As in, would it be possible to send some beer as a package without it causing trouble?

Also, any beers in the Texas area I should try? :D

I just did a cross-country trade with a buddy in Santa Rosa a couple weeks ago. I sent him a case of Trillium and he sent me a case of Pliny the Elder. As long as everything is packed well, you'll have no problem.

Surly Furious is the go-to for me.  Local to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area it's spread like wild fire in the last few years and you can get it on tap all over now.  Surly's limited stuff is pretty outstanding too.  Try it if you find it!

Oh, I finally tried Lagunitas when I was in LA a few weeks back.  I had their Censored, not exotic or anything but it was good.

I like Surly a lot.  I wish they would distro to Michigan.

Furious is great. I used to trade for Coffee Bender until our local brewery dialed in a decent joe.  I have a few Pentagram bottles I'm holding on to.  Darkness > DarkLord IMO.  Someday I'll hit up MN and check out the brewery.

Grabbed some stuff today that I'm looking forward too.  I'm nervous about the watermelon beer since they usually disappoint me and it wasn't the cheapest.  The last I had was Hell or High Watermelon which was awful.  Crux is super solid stuff, so I'm excited to try that.  And Pfriem seems to be solid from the one IPA I had (if not always to my taste), so I'm excited there.  And you can never go wrong with Grimm.  Solarc is always just weird out there experimental stuff that's fun to try.

And ran around searching for some stuff for Halverson last weekend that I was going to ship to him...but now he won't be visiting.  Tried to find some decent local stuff last minute.  Not all of it is killer, but it's all good stuff.  He did miss out on an awesome can of Brouwerij West Switcheroo though.

I almost exclusively drink sours these days.  It's a bit of an acquired taste but it's hard for me to go back.  Lately the Rodenbach Alexander has been my go to, albeit a bit hard to get your hands on bottles depending on the time of year.

One of my favorites is the Cuvee Des Jacobins as well.

My wife loves sours; I can drink them occasionally if I'm in the right mood.

I am sucker for anything barrel aged though; if I see that on a label I'm trying it no matter what type of beer it is!

That is the thing about brewing though. It typically takes a while for breweries to come into their own. They need to get used to actually using the massive equipment and all the **** that goes along with it. There may be a ton of ****ty micro breweries but some will fail and others will flourish and still others will just languish in mediocrity. I like that there are a lot more breweries now and that they keep popping up. Some may exist only to be eventually bought out like ballast point but a lot will just want to brew good beer.
Biking is fun.

There were a ton before that too.  I'm still not sure I wouldn't lump Ballast Point in the ****ty bunch...or at least mediocre.

There's a reason people talk about the microbrew bubble.  There are a ton of ****ty places trying to cash in on the craze.  That means it's harder to find the gold in the dross.

Oh, I'm not hating on Ballast Point, I love their beer...I'm just saying every time I go to the store there are like 30 new brands popping up, I try them and don't care for a lot of them...Maybe I'm TOO PICKY?! :D

The time I had with your mom last night.

But,seriously, Beach wood is better and readily available, at least down here.  Firestone Luponic tends to be readily available and solid.  Hell, I'd put Racer 5 over Sculpin.

YES!!!!

She does get around!

Racer 5 is great! I have a ton of beers I would put over Scoulpin, I was just saying its a good beer.

Green Flash Double IPA and New Glory Beer out of Sacramento are killer beers.

Best IPA I ever had was pliny the elder from russian river.

But most important (with any ipa) is shelf life, we could compare beers all day long and measure our peckers but at the end of it we really need to be checking dates on these brewskies.

Yup, freshness matters.  That's the problem with the mass produced stuff, it could be months or even years old.  You want **** that's within weeks of the bottling date.

So good I had to come and share.

One thing prairie knows how to do right is stouts.

Not a huge fan of their other stuff, but their stouts are probably some of the best in the world.

I didn't even know this thread existed!

Some stuff from the past couple weeks:

Cans from Bottle Logic's "Konami Code" series, this being the second offering called "Down Down" ("Up Up" was first).

Some tasting at Monkish this Sunday. Only snapped this one pic, but tried eight beers. Left is "Anomaly", one of their Belgian style dark ales. Right is "Rose Tinted Glasses" which they describe as "Belgian wheat ale w/ blood orange, cara cara and hibiscus."

This is what I brought home. "The Realness" DIPA x2, "Parry H. Larker" Oat DIPA and "April Babies" IPA.

A couple of those bottles are making their way to a fellow GH member as we speak. In return I'll be getting some Veil and RAR cans from the east coast. Really looking forward to trying those out!
