If you look up the list of countries by meat consumption, the US of A is at the top of the list, while most European (not to mention 3rd world) countries sit much lower.
These numbers are so high because of the mainstream: people like my coworkers, who eat a couple of factory-farmed meat-based meals on daily basis. (Meanwhile, 'murrican portions are supposedly larger.)
That's probably your default reference-point. I'm very much opposed to that kind of lifestyle with its health and environmental impact, though.
OTOH, don't forget that radical Vegans are opposed to all sorts of animal products, including leather or wool to pick the most obvious examples.
