Persistant health problems
« on: Wed, 15 October 2014, 18:42:19 »
Do you have any persistent health issues that you just learned to live with? Something the docs can't figure out, or is it just too much expense/bother to deal with?

Example: I have ulcers. I've had pretty much consistent heartburn since I was 19, all day(and night,) every day. Tried pills both prescription(Prevacid, etc) and not(Tums, etc) and basically it will never go away unless
1. Start eating nothing but yogurt and porridge for the rest of my life
2. Get expensive surgery to have the ulcers removed or sewn up

Do you have any lifelong health problems you just deal with?

Feet and back?

I'm also really flat-footed, so I have ankle problems, knee things, back things, and neck things from ducking so much (cars, etc.).

It literally hurts to ride an airplane, which sucks.

I also get frequent nose bleeds for no reason, which I do know happens to quite a few others as well.

But that's about it for persistent things.  It seems like I'm doing a lot of complaining here, but it's really not terribly serious stuff and I'm used to it, so I'm not fussed.   :thumb:

I've been injured a lot but I don't have any chronic illnesses or anything like that.  However, I've rolled my ankles enough times playing sports that I have to pretty much wear a brace whenever I do anything active, now.  That kind of sucks.

I lost a bunch of weight (over 70lbs), but now whenever I cheat any additional weight goes directly to my upper legs.  The problem?  My leg fat is choking my boys.  I need get back on a plan and stick with it.

I think CNN should change their name to Ebola News Network

While I don't have any persistent physical ailments, I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder when I was 17(now 27). It can be very debilitating at times, but thanks to medication, and some regular therapy, I'm able to manage it to the best of my ability.  Some days can be very difficult though.

I have had plantar fasciitis in both feet since 5th grade.  Every morning when I get out of bed, it feels like I am stepping onto a red hot bed of nails.  I am used to it, but at the end of longer days, I can barely stand.  I could have surgery for it, but there is no promise that it won't return and I can't afford to be off of my feet completely while it heals.  I also have bad knees (hyper-extended more times than I care to admit), lower back, shoulders, and wrists from years of motocross.  I feel way older than I should.
wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

I had Osgood-schlatters starting from puberty: really annoying knee pain when I used to race/jump.  Now that my bones have stopped growing, I just have this extra funky bump below my kneecaps.

My most immediate health issue is knee-related, too. My kneecaps on both legs are high, tilted, and prone to dislocation. Ugh, typing this out makes me want to vomit a bit, though. I've dislocated both knees more than I can count. If I were to guess, I've probably dislocated my left knee in the area of 30 or 40 times and my right knee at least a few dozen.

This video was particularly inspiring.  Link skips to where Rodney Mullen talks about overcoming major health problems, but the entire thing was a pretty good listen.

I have had one problem that has been escalating for about 15 years. I was in the hospital 10 times last year, and it's almost financially broken my family several times over. My wife has been more and more like a single mom of three small kids with a husband that's bedridden. Sucks for all of us sometimes.
I'm back.

I can see that as being possible.  For me, it gets triggered by the cold. If I lived in a consistently warm climate, like Aruba, I'd be just fine. Environment is a big factor.

i have four chronic diseases and don't care.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Some minor problems with stomach acid starting three years ago. It is not at ulcer level, but I take ranitidine regularly, and additional antacids quite often.

More financial news then anything. There are still some good news sources out there, you just have to watch out for those soapbox journalists.

Gluten intolerance is something that you can get tested for, so you'll know for sure. My test was negative.

my right arm is ****ed up from a surgery and accident.
basically constant pain, which i can live with. but the real hardship is that my armpit is constantly uncomfortable and there is nothing i can do about it.

for my entire life, sleeping typing whatever, its just constantly uncomfortable. not pain, just annoying.

but its so much worse than the pain, i would take more pain for it to go away.

Issues with my L5 thanks to a car accident, so constant levels of pain and/or discomfort.  If I take pain meds, sure it helps but the long term is not worth it (was on opiate based pain meds for 15yrs).  If cannabis (I had the best outcome using non-THC based CBD w/ mid level doses w/ THC w/in a day) were legal in GA I would prefer to use that for my pain - used it when I lived in MA, but with my current employer they test for it so I have gone the way of using different strains of Kratom instead (not the same but works well enough in my case).
