Advice on Ergodox Caps?
« on: Wed, 08 January 2014, 23:01:45 »
Can any keycap gurus give me advice on what kind of caps to get for the ergodox I'm in the process of sourcing?

I'd like them to be blank because I'm going to change the layout a lot I imagine.

I think most people use DSA caps, but I'm thinking about using LP so the keyboard is as thin as possible. On the photos that I've seen, the keys look too high to me.

edit: after a bit of research, I think LP only fits Cherry ML switches, so they're out.

Also, I'm not sure how to choose what row profiles to get if I get sculptured ones like DCS here:
50305-0

Actually, looking at that pic, the ones on the left and right sides of each hand are the wrong keys, they're meant to be longer.

I'd also like to get any advice on where to get them from? I saw a GB on deskthority for SA ones (HONEY/ERGO from Round 5), but like I say, I'd like to avoid high profile keys if possible.

I've seen a couple of keycap websites but none of them that I've seen list the ergodox as a kit.

From what I've read the 2x keys are a problem to get in most key sets.

Thanks guys!

You could watch out for any upcoming group buys , They will probably include a Ergodox set now

You could also, given you want them blank, check out the Signature Plastics overstock form.  Its on there website, and when I was considering getting blank caps, is where I went.  As it turns out, a number of the Group Buys have done DSA (non-sculpted, and thus able to be moved around easily), and a few have done specific Dox sets.

I use SA profile caps with my Ergodox and I love them.  Kinda have to wait for a group buy with those caps. But you were looking for lower profile, so cannot help you there.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

I'm so excited for CalmDepths to start shipping. Keep your eyes out though. You may see some pop up in the classified section after they're shipped out.

Also you might still be able to get in on the DT Round 5 / Honeywell Sphericals

Just curious how that will work with the 2x1 thumbkeys, I've seen some kits where they look higher than the other keys and I don't think I'd like that:

50488-0

All the other keys in that kit look good profile-wise to me though.

if you plan to use stabilizers, you'd want to use the taller keys.

Also, u cannot use thick pbt keys for the outer thumb key (towards center) with stabilizers.

If you're not using stabilizers, then anything goes.. You can probably use the "numpad enter key" the vertical one.

This way it contours better with your thumb.

Yes, it will be a black blank, to go along with the full set buy I am running. Or you can get it separately to use with Cherry doubleshots white on black or whatever. It will consist of the 1.5 keys around the borders for each correct row E-B and some 1x2s (numpad enter) for the thumb keys and some additional 1x1 B for the bottom row/thumb area.
I don't see how there is any problem using stabs with numpad enter... it is the same on pretty much any numpad/keyboard or I am missing something?

Here's how I have mine (these are from the SP caps that MassDrop offers along with the actual ErgoDox group buy):

Combination of DSA for the alpha/num keys, DSA for verticals, thumb clusters, and bottom rows. Deep-dish DSA for F and J (in lieu of homing nubs).

Thanks for the picture and explanation!

Aren't those alpha/num keys DCS? They look cylindrical to me.

Are the 1.5x ones on the outsides DCS? They look good with the sculpturing (is that what it's called when the rows are at different angles?).
