favorite game of all time
« on: Wed, 20 February 2013, 19:11:18 »
I thought this could be an interesting thread.
Plus I am looking for games I've never played before, that I maybe should've.

Notice I said 'favorite', not 'best'. A game can be your most favorite even if you wouldn't agree it's the best.

Mine is: Earthbound.
Runner ups: FFVI, FFVII, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 3, Ocarina Of time.

Original Xbox. Star Wars: Jedi Knight

There was something about being able to pretty much control the swing of the lightsaber that I just loved. Silly now, but back then, it was amazing :)

If I had to pick just one? Metal Slug

Others that make the list are StarCraft, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Super Mario World, Rampage, and Raiden.

Edit: OMG, I forgot about Diablo 2 and Pokemon Red!

Nononononono....

Best PC game of all times has to be Raptor - Call of Shadows

It's SERIOUSLY good, and has tremendous "Flow" to the experience...

Looks like an everyday scroller shooter, but with simple RPG element.. Tight control... awesomeness.  :D

I was writing a list but it got too long, but really, even picking out top 5 is a difficult task. I'll try to narrow it down as much as I can,

All games are PC versions unless otherwise listed:

Guild Wars
Dear Esther
Spec Ops: The Line
Battlefield 2
Half-Life series, including BS and OF
Counter Strike games
Crysis
Commander Keen
Battlefield 2
Bastion
Oblivion
Psychonauts
Diablo 2
Call of Duty 2,4 and 6(MW2) (Yes, I know CoD games aren't good games, but they get to be in my favourites simply because they've provided me with so much mindless action and fun. Kind of like Steven Seagal. You don't mess with Steven Seagal."
Portal
Pokemon Yellow for GBC

These are all games that all have a special place in my figurative heart. Picking a single favourite from these is a nearly impossible task, so I'll leave it at this list. I've probably forgotten a few games that probably should be on it as well.

ah ha, no one has said starcontrol2 yet.

halo/mass effect entire plotlines are taken from starcontrol 2.

why are ppl naming multiple games? that's a cop out, don't say (from this console) or (from this era) one game! you get to choose one, learn to read! no one asked for your list of games, op said one.

unlike most of you, i can pick one. and it will be the elder scrolls 3: morrowind.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I played that, but not until years after its heyday.  It was around the release of xbox360.  Despite that, it was truly amazing.  I was captivated.  Good one!  Definitely hints of it in Halo.

And yeah, the second one isn't really for me. It's a decent game as far as MMOs go, but there's just so much about it that annoys me, I could go on for quite a while about it. Still got just under 500 hours in it though...
I still play GW, but not much since I'm pretty much the only one these days.

Since many people have brought up FPS - I'd list two... (I know you are only supposed to pick one...)

Urban Terror - basically a 'sort of' modern Counterstrike that is freeware, has PC/Mac/Linux distros, and significantly less hackers.

Before that was Alien Vs. Predator 2 - I had to have spent over 2,000 hours on this but stopped due to Sierra pulling the plug on the servers.
I'd say it's based on risk management rather than luck. :P

There were so many great games...

- Tetris
- Theme Park
- Monkey Island 1+2
- Street Fighter 2/3/4
- Duke Nukem 3d
- Command & Conquer 1+2
- Final Fantasy 7/8/9
- Metal Gear Solid
- Quake 1/2/3
- GTA 1/3/4

As many times as I have replayed over the years I guess I will have to say Silent Hill 3, the Myst series and Blood. Runners up would be System Shock 1+2, Wizardry series, most of the infocom catalog and Tex Murphy series.

I spent loads of time playing C&C: Tiberian Sun, AoE2, C&C: Red Alert 2, NHL '99, Battle for Wesnoth, StarCraft, WarCraft2, Diablo 2 and Baldur's Gate (and probably some other games I can't recall). I don't dare to choose only one, but AoE2 and RA2 would definitely be in the top few.

how do you spend that many hours and "not go pro"

Started in 2000 and played almost every day for most of 10 years... hours add up. :)  Going pro requires much more solid dedication... i knew people that went (or tried to) go pro... it wasn't much fun for them.  But, it is satisfying going into office with a deagle and take out the entire other team by yourself... that's what made it addicting to me.  I have kids and such now, I'm cured.  (though, I occasionally still lapse.)

I wouldn't think so, because if you use the pause option correctly, the Possible choices you can make are VERY limited.. which means assuming you're playing diligently, You could always make the Best decision given any "attack" circumstances... and pretty much nothing can really kill you except the final boss, when you're missing certain weapon sets.

1.6 has guys who's played nonstop for 13 years.... because that's the only game their computer can run... so.... yea, they're pretty good..

I've played Halo-1 for 12 years... Unstoppable... I can even outscore hackers, assuming they don't hack the server and change the score directly.

I must have logged over 1k hours and I'm still not that great. I can go onto a server and kick everyone's arse or finish 10-10 :3

well yea.. LOL, most players are just 12 year olds on REALLY REALLY ****ty 6yr old PCs..  And they probably didn't setup the graphics right for maximum FPS...

Most of the 12 year olds have moved onto GO because of GFXXXXX!!"!" SDLFJ KA9WUD A9WD NAWD NAS DAW /BLOWSBRAINSONWALL

I do enjoy the graphics of Source over 1.6 if I am to be honest, and I am out classed too often on 1.6 :(

1.6 has guys who's played nonstop for 13 years.... because that's the only game their computer can run... so.... yea, they're pretty good..

I've played Halo-1 for 12 years... Unstoppable... I can even outscore hackers, assuming they don't hack the server and change the score directly.

:D I havn't played Halo 1 for years D: Wouldn't even know how to get a copy anymore :( Great game, although I'm nowhere near as good as you.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)
