I got a Samsung 830 that was only about 64GB and it was strictly for programs. It was great and lasted for a couple of years, but was mostly full.

Now I have a Samsung 840 with about 128GB and it does what I need. It is about 2/3 full.

I still trust "real" hard drives for serious long-term storage, and have learned to keep at least 2-3 external hard drives for rotating archives.

So if I was not so lazy and archived much more often .....
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

I got in early and cheap with an OCZ 32GB SSD. It was nothing like the Samsungs or Intels of its day, but it definitely knocked my socks off at the time.

Currently running two Samsung 64GB SSDs and a 3TB HDD (all SATA), using LVM in Linux to partition it all. My next drive will surely be one of those sweet hybrid PCI-E ones.

Kingston v300. Then, ignoring the internet, another Kingston v300.

Haven't had issues with either SSD but will probably upgrade to an EVO 850 this holiday season.

IDK, but we don't have solid state drives on our work machines yet. Annoying AF.

Here's my take on the PCI-E drives..

they're NOT worth it..

Because 4k low queue Random read performance has been stuck at 30-40MB/s for YEARSsss...

So...  The Extremely high-performance drives that feature pcie, etc etc,  is ONLY FASTER for server like workloads in enterprise environments..

It won't make the desktop client loads ANY FASTER..  but it will cost M0re money..

Stick with der 850 pros.. or Sandisk ex pro..

Well I still like the idea of a hybrid drive, though. I miss the simple days of popping a single drive into a computer and just letting it do its thing. All this volume management, partitioning, etc., is for the birds.

Mine was a 90GB OCZ Vertex 2 (I think that was the model at least).  It gave me trust issues.  My second was a Mushkin Chronos.  It also had problems.  My current is a Samsung 840 Pro.  I decided that it was worth spending a little more to get something that should be more reliable due to a better controller.

EVO 840 120GB. It's funny how I posted about not being particularly awed by the speed and it turning out the EVO 840 line actually is affected by a widespread issue that degrades the speed significantly over time (down to as low as 50 MB/s read).

An SSD is always a good deal no matter what you pay. Because it convinces you that your current computer still has life left in it, which saves you from upgrading everything else when the drive was the bottleneck in the first place.

My first was a 120 GB Vertex 2 (which somehow never gave me any trouble). I also have a couple of other 120GB drives, a Kingston SSDNow (v200? not sure), and a couple of Kingston Hyperx Furys. With four drives over three machines, all the operating systems I use on a regular basis are now on SSDs as of this January or so.

Everything is just so snappy compared to a HDD, but I can't justify the cost yet for mass storage.

bought a corsair force GT refurbed for dirt cheap back in the day. Paid $90 for a 120gb SSD when the average price was well over $150 for the average 120gb SSD.

Still works to this day and I use it as my main boot drive. If it ever fails well the only thing lost is a day of reinstalling OS and programs

Old western digital 64GB SSD. It was originally used as a cache drive for ZFS. I then picked up a WD 128GB before they got out of the market (the 64GB failed and they sent me a second 128GB). Still use one as a cache drive today. Other then that, it just makes sense to use SSD's as your main drive so I've moved all of our computers to SSDs now.

I got an OCZ Vertex 3, 120Gb.  Worked fine on my on-the-way-out AMD790X board.  When I put it in the new P67 board, constant hangups until I did a firmware update.  Then I passed it on to a friend after getting a Corsair Neutron GTX 240Gb, and it hung all the time until it got ANOTHER firmware flash, on an AMD770 board.  I think it just liked to be flashed.

My first was an original OCZ Vertex prerelease drive, direct from OCZ. It was about 6-7 years ago, and cost somewhere around $250.  Oh, and it was 30GB.
I'm back.

OMG

dude..

You can watch 1080p   LOLOL

OK..  what you need to do... is download   MPC-HC,  and Lav Filter

Make sure to get the 32-bit version.. the 64bit version is buggy

NOW,  install mpc hc..  and lav filter

WHEN you install Lav filter,  uncheck the 64bit selection, you don't want that, it will conflict.. only check the x86 boxes..

THEN,  configure mpc-hc to use lav filter, under - external filters.. select it from the list,  and put a box next to "prefered"

THEN,  open up the Lav video filter configurator,  and click on the top right box  DXVA..

That should allow you to play 1080p/ 60 content through your GPU.

If you want me to walk u through this over skype let me no..

when you say first gen i5.. you mean like the  i5-760 ?

regardless of CPU, though,  I'm 100% sure your setup can play 1080p/60  video files..

GTA-V   maybe not...

it'd be a gpu limit mostly though..

because if it's first gen i5,  it can overclock assuming you got the right board.

And I have an asus ROG MOBO. I fell for the gaming ****. So it can overclock.
No, he’s not around. How that sound to ya? Jot it down.

My first SSD was a Intel x25m G2 160GB.

Now I use a old Intel 510 250GB (C) + Intel 730 480GB (F).

WD Velociraptor 1TB (D) + some Asus BD player/burner (E).

I started with an intel x25 64gb.   Slow, but still way faster than hdd.  After upgrading to an 840 evo 256gb (which I still have and it has not been affected by the slowdown issue).  The x25 was relegated to my benching rig with a stripped version of win xp and a bunch of benches. When the mobo in the bench rig died I gave the x25 to a friend and it is still going strong.
wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

I got one of the first Intel 40gigs, it was a bit small for my desktop, but wow, what a difference.

At this point I have a 256gig Crucial M4 in the desktop, a 128gig M4 in my laptop, another 128gig M4 in my other laptop. I think the C300 or Intel is in my moms desktop, and I lost track of the other drive. It  may be on a shelf or another system, I'm not sure. My servers are still on spinners just due to cost per gig (around 7Tb), but they will get SSD when the price comes down more (most are on Caviar Blacks), by which point I hope 10gigabit ethernet is cheaper, they already saturate gigabit ethernet.

Not sure if this is correct but I read that the firmware doesn't actually fix the issue

My offices IT policy is that everyone gets only one machine, and I asked for a desktop, mainly to make it easier to persuade them to buy upgrades for me, but also to facilitate not working outside the office. But I also wanted a laptop so I made friends with the IT guy and got him to give me an old Dell i5 laptop with a 160gb HDD inside. The 160gb quickly became full, and thus horrendously slow, but they wouldn't upgrade it for me because I wasn't even supposed to have that machine. So I bought myself a 240gb crucial ssd and popped it in the work laptop and wow, what a difference! It went from being so slow as to be virtually unusable to being faster and more responsive than my i7 desktop with 3x as much RAM.
I'm still very slightly miffed that I had to pay for an upgrade to a work machine but when I give it back I'll just pop the ssd out and put it in my wife's netbook or something.

You are correct..

The firmware is a BALM solution,  so it rectifies the Performance loss behavior. However it does not fix the technological flaw which caused the problem..

The major voltage ****s still occur..

The fix comes at a cost as well, reducing the durability of the drive by 30%

How could you guys even internet or computer...  without SSD......

Show Image

This sums up my feeling about this topic.

My first SSD was (and still is) a used Intel 330 series 120GB that i got for a good deal of $60 CAD?  This was like 2 years ago when 120GB's were $100+ easy
