Am I the only one who thinks Evangelion is super boring, and all the characters are really dislikeable and annoying? Really some of the most annoying characters ever.
Evangelion is... something that makes more sense in context. Anno has struggled with lifelong depression, and the desire to run away from his problems - fears and struggles he places on Shinji. Coupled with a distaste of the state of the mecha genre on the whole at the time, you end up with what is largely commentary on how ridiculous the idea is that you would ever put adolescents in giant robots to save the world. And if you were to do so, it could only be done at the hands of deeply flawed and damaged people, which then pass on those flaws and damages to the adolescents, on top of the trauma they receive from being forced into combat in life or death situations.

There's not really any characters in it that are supposed to be "good" - even the most likeable adults are objectively pretty horrible people when you step back and look at it, and the kids are a product of an awful environment that could not have been better designed to leave them dysfunctional. You're largely supposed to feel sympathy and pity for Shinji and Asuka, and perhaps a little bit of admiration for when they can overcome their circumstances and show some measure of triumph and human connection.

But none of them are intended to be likable.

I've been getting really into One Piece lately. Fun characters and premise, let's see if it doesn't wear thin after 1000 episodes.
It does do that thing I hate where an anime pads out scenes and recaps previous events incessantly, I hate that lazy ****. They always recap the previous ep at the beginning, and there was one early episode where they did that, then twice more in the middle of the show recapped the same exact ****. Come on man. Or when Luffy spent 3 episodes underwater drowning, it does that Jojo thing where short time is drawn out crazy long and huge gaps in time are just skipped over.
But mostly the characters are fun and diverse, it's easy to leave on and half pay attention while working. IDK how the creator has done 1000 manga issues and approaching 1000 episodes and 17 movies in like 22 years. That's a lot of work.

Interesting video! There's a few problems with it, however:

The "death threats" and graffiti at the Gainax offices occurred after Death and Rebirth, not the original series. By this point, End of Evangelion was pretty much finished - Death & Rebirth were released in March 97, and EoE came out 4 months later in July - it would have been well into the post production phase at that point. In fact, Rebirth is largely just the 25 minutes of EoE. As for the death threats themselves, in an interview with the Tokyo International Film Festival, Anno said that the letters and emails sent were written by Gainax staff, as they didn't believe they legally could use real fan mail. They've also all been translated, and the majority of what was written in the letters and emails were actually positive, though there were a few that were decidedly negative. It hasn't been said anywhere if the ratio of the "faked" letters matched what they really got.

Another problem is that Anno has repeatedly stated in interviews, even after EoE, that Shinji is a surrogate for himself. If EoE is Anno's way of taking revenge against anyone, it's not his audience.

The other issue is that EoE is at least in part based off of the original scripts written for the series. In the 'Red Cross Book' given to theatergoers for EoE, it explains that the first part of the movie is based off of the original script for episode 25 that they had to scrap.

I do think his overall characterization of Shinji and Asuka is spot on, though.

Currently watching Vivy, animated by the same studio that made the first three seasons of AOT. Highly recommend!

Here's a trailer if you're interested:

Didn't hear about it before, but the trailer looks nice, should start watching it after I finish hunter x hunter. I would like to watch a sports anime, but I am afraid that none of them will be able to impress me more than Haikyuu. This is the best sport related anime which I have ever seen. No wonder why it has so many fans, even a quiz on which haikyuu character are you, which I already completed. Can't wait for the upcoming season, some intense matches are awaiting ahead.
