Has anyone used MX Silvers/Speeds for typing extensively?
« on: Fri, 20 December 2019, 06:34:34 »
As per title. I'm considering getting a linear board for typing, as I want to try it without the tactile feedback. At a minimum I'm going to get reds, but I've also been thinking about taking it a step further and getting silvers/speeds, so I wonder if anyone has experience typing on silvers/speeds extensively. I do know there are typists who enjoy blacks and reds but haven't heard about speeds/silvers from typists.

As personal experience has shown me, lower travel distances are very detrimental to accuracy. I tried typing on the highest actuation point on a Topre switch using their APC tech (1.5mm) and frequently had letters switch place or space come out early or late. When I switched it to the lowest (2.5mm), my accuracy increased dramatically. The switch was otherwise the exact same. Because of this, is personally suggest not using a short travel switch, as it will make you less accurate and not any faster. It is advantageous in certain games because of the minimally faster response time, but that is unimportant in typing.

Thank you.

Well, I seem to get less accuracy with browns than blues, but on low-profile blues I get about the same as or better than on tall blues… hard to say really. However, I suppose I get a better ratio of both accuracy and speed on tall blues than slim blues, but at the cost of more finger fatigue. Subjectively low-profile blues feel a bit like stiffer tall browns, although they are also vaguely similar to higher-quality springy scissor membranes.

The experience of typing on slim switches (Kailh) subjectively suggests to me that a bit more travel would be better, just with less resistance.

Most people are faster on laptop boards, because lower travel distance makes it easier to time the keypress.

If someone is slower, it could just be an acustomization thing, but this seems to be the commonly reported case for most faster typers 120wpm +

OVERALL, Ultimate speed does not depend on the keyboard.

I mean... i've tried MX Silvers for typing and they suck for both typing and gaming. By far the worst cherry switch. Too light, scratchy and fast for the audience that they're intended for.

I spent an evening on them, and felt that they bottomed out wayyyy too easily, which really started to hurt my fingers, since I'd try to compensate with a lighter touch that I just don't have.

I honestly just think they are dreadful, but perhaps when I was younger and into competitive Starcraft I would have used them for that.

Nowadays I type quite a bit, and comfort is key, these remind me quite a bit of Apple old clear keyboards in how they bottom out very hard.
