Topre domes - opinion on heavier domes?
« on: Mon, 30 November 2020, 14:20:37 »
Hey,

Pretty new to this sorry if I get some terminology wrong. A good friend of mine whos obsessed with keyboards lent me his unmodified fc660c. I enjoy typing on it, but when I tried his 90g domes, I fell in love. I had never typed on anything like that before, it felt like bubble wrap and i knew the direction of board I think I want to build for myself in the future.

To my surprise, he said the community generally thinks 90g is too heavy and causes fatigue? I found 90g to be so satisfying, like popping a bubble every time I pushed it. I loved it. But I only tried it for a few minutes so I dont have much long term typing experience on it if fatigue is actually a thing or not.

Has anyone had experience with the heavier domes, like 90g or even heavier?

Cheers

Yep. 90g is certainly up there but not quite in the ridiculous category yet. Your fingers would probably wear out after a while but hey, if it's your thing then go for it! I personally tend to stay in the 55-70 range.

Whatever you like is the right weighting for you.

I personally would hate typing on them....maybe gaming would be less annoying but typing would be not so fun...

But if you enjoy them, that's the only thing that matters...

90 seems crazy to me, your hands would be aching like a mother after typing for a while and fingers can be delicate things. Maybe on a keypad, but not on a main board unless your digits resemble uncooked sausages. :p

Yeah, like I said I only spent a few minutes with it, dont know if Id like it for the long term.

Also I heard they are kinda hard to come by in the used market, and no one makes them anymore. boo.

Set a saved search for them on eBay that sends you email notifications and post on mech market

I am typing on the 45g Topre domes in my HHKB for a few months and just thinking of typing on 90g domes seems insane for me.

But, as some already here said, whatever feels right to you is the right dome for you. One of the first things I have learned when I entered the hobby is that a lot comes simply down to personal preferences. That is also what I love about the hobby, you need to try out things, switches, boards, keycaps, to find the setup you love.

If 90g feels right for you, just stick to it and use it for some weeks or months  :thumb:

I did not think there is such a thing as 90g Topre switches? Topre tops out at 55g.

If you are using 90g switches, these must be one of the MX switch variants (Blacks? Greys?) which uses a totally different mechanism.

The best way to tell is try to gently type on it like you would in a very long typing session, and see how that feels after a few minutes.

He's talking about Jchan's BKE redux domes, the extreme variant is rated at 90g for bottom out force.

I rocked some BKE redux extremes in my 660C for awhile. I will say they were surprisingly useable & they break in after awhile too probably making them closer to 80g bottom out force once broken in. Although IMHO they are still too heavy for everyday use. I fell in love with them at first, just like you did OP, & they were fine for quick typing sessions. For extended typing sessions & gaming they very quickly became a hindrance. I didn't notice it at first cause I don't often have to type for extended sessions & rarely use my Topre boards for gaming, but once I had to write an extended email with it I found the extreme domes to be very tiring. Then I tried gaming with them just to see & they definitely felt very slow for that to me. Since then I tried BKE redux heavies (65g bottom out) which were much better for extended typing sessions, but still felt fatiguing after awhile, & also still felt slow for gaming to me. So ultimately I ended up putting the stock 45g domes back in my 660C & have stuck with them since. At least that is my personal experience with BKE redux domes.

Also I should mention that I started off in this hobby with my weighting preferences leaning towards heavier switches (70g & up), but in the past couple years have started coming way down with my weighting preferences (65g & below). I would see if your buddy can lend you his Topre board with BKE exterems in it for a couple days. That way you could use it long enough to get a real feel for the heavy domes. Like many others have stated, hands on experience is really the only way to tell if a certain switch or weighting is for you.

IMO, 55g BKE redux domes are perfection especially after lubing the sliders. Best tactile switches period IMO.

Ah, thanks. Had no idea this existed, and it now baffles me slightly why it would exist at all :)  I have tried MX greys at 80g and quickly realised that I could use that weight on a spacebar and nothing else.

MX 75g is already quite exhausting.  But if it's just games and stuff, it's fine.
