Harry is a total twat, I hate the whole universe...

It comes out of a very ignorant and horrific person of an author. Nuff' said.

I hate the whole universe...

I disagree entirely. I read the entire series to my kids - it was our "bedtime stories" reading for over a year, we had finished all but the last book just a couple of weeks before the last one came out - and they were just at the right age, in the early stages of elementary school, to be quivering with excitement for it. And although the first movie or 2 had come out, I insisted that we finish the books before they started watching the movies.

Although JK Rowling seems to have turned into a nasty person, she crafted the HP books extremely well for her audience - the first book was short and simple, and by the end they were much longer and darker with an interesting crew of secondary characters. And as the father of 2 kids who were at just the right age to be her target audience, I appreciate her contribution to their love of literature.

That said, the movies were no better than most movie adaptations of books, but they did kinda sorta tell the stories ,,,,

"Young Adult" fiction (aka YA) is a mixed bag with a lot of junk, and I read a good bit of it along with them. But some of it is quite good, and Scott Westerfeld also comes quickly to mind (but the movie made of "Uglies" was awful).

"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

Developed nations export all the hardwork in the form of slavery to other nations.

Statistically speaking, experts in the field of Slavery contend that in reality there are MORE SLAVES today than 150years ago when slavery was abolished in the US.

Slavery is the result of excess consumption in the upper social class and wealthy nations.

HARRY is claiming victimhood,  only in the sense that he's got slightly less than his peers in material.  But relative to the GLOBAL perspective,  he's still a very lucky person, not working a field barely scraping enough food to eat in a day,  which represents the current VAST MAJORITY of HUMANITY.

The PLOT of Harry Potter, obscures that fact. It's the woah is me western tragedy, why must I eat pork chops while the neighbor eats lobster.  This is at the heart of everything that's wrong with the world.

The proper contrast is CITY OF JOY,  Rickshaw puller in India, Saving for his daughter's dowry, On hard times, having to sell blood.

Well, he has had the most powerful and ruthless magician in the world obsessed with killing him.

PS - my name is also Harry and I have been profoundly grateful for the life I have since I was a small child

This is not a criticism of You, the Fohat.dig'n's

We just have to innoculate people on where humanity is headed.    We're all going to be living in Indian Slums in 20-30 years.

Just be mentally prepared to pull Rickshaws and maybe having to sell blood more often than not.

Porzadny Czlowiek / A Decent man

Polish mini series made for HBO so you can watch it in english too.
One of the better ones I've seen recently, really enjoyed it. Dont know if in english its going to be as good as original, but I highly recommend it.

...then immediately goes back on hiatus after only 6 new episodes

It's like a joke at this point

They should've stopped after season 1, but prolly already signed the actors for 3.

Lilo + Stitch live action.

It's. Alright.  Questioning why it needs to exist at all, sure, but I mean, it's still well done, perfectly watchable, especially for its intended audience..

One would suspect the hate is mostly coming from 40yr old millennials.

In the Mood for Love

Really good melodramatic movie. It was so nice to watch it and let myself be moved and even disturbed by such a tense atmosphere between main two characters.
I also liked the cinematography - I don't know any other movies of that director, but the way they filmed it, those scenes, where camera was not showing their faces, those slow motion bits, exaggerating the tension and love between them.
Main female character - that actress, Maggie Cheung - wow - she is so feminine, moving with such a grace and finesse.
Fantastic, highly recommended.

If you like HK-females of (that era),  Cecilia Cheung,  King of Comedy (1999), absolute Peak.

Tony Leung, mm... best acting, some might point to Lust, Caution (2007), but it's got too much noodity for Tp4.

"Maggie" Cheung, her best was in TV, but those are not watchable if you're not Asian because alot of cultural stuff don't translate.

I dot think I ever watched HK style movie like that before, just this one came up somewhere and I noticed they translated it to Polish, so watched it with my missus.
I liked how subtle it was, no nudity, but transferred all the feelings and tension.

They lived in a strange arangement - renting rooms in one huge flat or something, it was a bit hard to understand what was going on there. They kinda had their own entrance, but inside a flat already or something like that, sharing one kitchen I think. With tight corridors and camera lens used (I think it was something like 50mm or narrower) logistics were hard to understand :D

It's a boarding house. Back in the day, it would've been hard to pipe utility to each individual apartment.

Tp4 still remembers when he first got piped gas on the 6th floor. Before then we had to drag these giant metal cans upstairs.

I see. Boarding houses, like boarding schools.
Does it mean that whoever owned the whole building, was also cooking for all tenants, or offered food for them for extra cost?
In that movie, old lady was cooking food and most of those peeps were eating there.

I have still not seen it, but have wanted to.

Once, I confused "Lust: Caution" for this movie, and bought its DVD instead.  :-[

Oh nice. We were considering watching this, but then the wife looked into the length and the description and said it was too arthousy :D After this film was released in Russia, it became a must-watch for all our pretentious types :D :D :D

This one is different, it is filmed differently than most movies, but I really liked all scenes, way it was filmed, put together.
I encourage you to watch it, I don't think you would be disappointed :)

They is use AI to generate prehistoric animals, blended with real footage, you can barely tell what's real.

Just watched, The Fix (2024), Dystopian, B-movie

Script's pretty decent. Probably heavy use of AI co-author. Not in a bad way though.

The actors gave it their all, what little they had, a bit prickly around the edges, but it's fine.   Similar vibe as Ultraviolet (Milla Jovovich).

Small drawback of them using manipulative male-gaze throughout, but the result probably had to pass through a bunch of corpo-execs who wouldn't fund anything less.

/Watchable.

The Silent Planet (2024).

2 people,  penal planet,  non-violent movie,  but 1 guy's gone a little whacky.

Solid for what it is.  A mild relaxing mode throughout.   Watch with glass of something.

I miss TV-series. Back in the 90s, you could spend an entire evening watching TV, and everything was captivating, now legendary shows, no reruns. Discovery Channel used to have educational programmes, not just reality shows.

I have started watching Murderbot. I like sci-fi and the sentient bot's sarcastic self-monologue. But every episode feels too short.

Other than that, I watch anime.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Did you watch Pluto, it's exactly "that."

Robot and Frank was a very endearing and well acted little indie movie

Probably gonna go see The Phoenician Scheme next week, Wes Anderson's new movie. I like Benicio Del Toro  :thumb:

Finally started the "Last of Us", that intro (and basis of the series) is scary as hell.

Pretty good show though.
