Building a PC with some extra parts I have around and need some recommendations on the few parts I need.

Things I have:
Processor: Socket 775 Core 2 Duo
RAM: Kingston HyperX 8GBs of DDR3 1600 (Might be hard to find a mobo w/DDR3 1600 and CPU socket type?)
GPU: Nvidia 4series

I'd like to potentially build something in a shuttle case but not sure if that is doable with the size video card I have. I've seen some InWin cases I fancy though, so maybe I'll just go full size mid tower.

This is a budget build so I'm not trying to buy anything crazy expensive but I'm open to any suggestions.

ASUS P5P43TD, depending on what you intend to use it for, might be kind of tough to find in stock though as it is a couple of years old. Google found one in stock HERE, but their asking price is a bit steep.

Media and maybe some games is the idea, it's not going to be cutting edge but I'm getting pretty irritated with my laptop.

I've been keeping a computer I built in 2006 limping along with similar specs as the parts you have (c2d E6700, an asus board I don't remember the model number to, 2 gigs Ram, a low mid geforce card). It was rock solid running XP, but under Win7 is kind of buggy, with random freezing (I think it is graphic-related). Hopefully you'll have better stability issues with whatever set up you go with. I only use it for a media server, so I may throw a linux install on it to see if that helps things...

I think the it's going to easily handle W7 with that cpu/gpu

Unless you can find an s775 motherboard for cheap used or something, it might be a better idea to just get a value 1155 board and a Celeron or Pentium dual core. Should be possible to get something like that together for around $80. You might be able to sell the 775 cpu to soften the cost too.

Later generation 775 boards can do that memory type, but it never represented a performance edge.

If you're considering 1155, for a small media setup, you might consider the AMD A-series stuff too. Servicable CPU+halfway decent graphics all in a low-wattage single envelope, and you can get a nice Micro-ATX board cheap. My build at work is that way (A6-3450 on a Biostar A75 board). Nice and unassuming.

I haven't bought a Gigabyte board and I usually avoid Tiger Direct but this thing seems to be the ideal candidate for a motherboard.

I 2nd this mobo. I have four of them and currently working on a fifth for a Windows Server build. They are excellent boards for the price.

If you want to go cheap, you can pretty easily get ahold of a gutted PC (case and motherboard, but no ram, HDD, external graphics card) that'll fit your processor and memory for about $50 to $100 if you keep your eyes out. I'd watch ebay and craigslist for a while.

If you still haven't done this build you should be on the lookout for the Gigabyte EP45-UD3L motherboard. It supports DDR3, and the Gigabyte EP45 line of motherboards is regarded as the best overclocking motherboard for Socket 775. They can usually be had for $75-100 used, they're built like tanks, and they're stable as can be. Get a semi-decent air cooler, get a LGA775 processor up near the 4GHz mark and boom.

Depending on the tier of processor they can still be decently quick. An E8400 (make sure you get an E0 one) overclocked to 4GHz is on par with an i3-2100 at stock. Not too shabby. The Q9550 is still an absolute monster as well.

I believe I have an E0 revision E8400 sitting in my cabinet even... I clocked it to 4.8GHz on air, but ran it at 4.5GHz for 24/7 usage for about 2 1/2 years. Thing was a beast.

Got my model numbers mixed up... It's the EP45T-UD3P (NOT the EP45-UD3L or EP45-UD3P).

All versions except the EP45T use DDR2 memory.

So I'm starting to rethink this build a little as I get closer to moving to a new place, building a new desk/ PC (going for a whole new work space set up).

Maybe for the speed increase it would be worth it to just jump on a budget ivy bridge i3 + mATX combo. (DDR3 1600 RAM I have will definitely work well with this setup)

I'm still pretty much set on this entry level fractal design case.

Yes this is a better idea. Not sure about that motherboard though. There are some H77 boards out there that are not that much more cost and offer better options for features and connectivity, unless you need the obsolete lpt port for some reason.

In comparing sub $75 motherboards I found that this one supports the RAM and has USB3.0. If you know of anything better, post it up as I'm eager to get this build going.

Sad to say I think I would rather go with some Assrock at this price point. I know they haven't had a reputation for being good but a lot of reviews points to them upping their game recently. If you really prefer Gigabyte, probably this one then.

I would rather have an extra pair of usb3 ports than a useless lpt port, board layout is a little roomier for larger cpu heatsinks, that is all really.

To my knowledge there isnt ivy bridge i3s yet so youll have to go with some version of the 2100 which isnt bad. If you want send me a pm and ill throw a build together for you.

I have that Fractal MicroATX case, and it's terrible quality. The sides are a PITA to take off. It's very congested because it only has two top shelves (1 5.25 and 1 universal). It only looks cool because it's painted black.

I recommend the CM Elite 343. Much more spacier when you remove the bottom HDD bracket. There are four shelves (2 5.25 and 2 3.5), so you can hide extra wires up on top. Build quality is vastly superior to the Fractal.
