Topre Variable / 30g Info?
« on: Wed, 13 February 2013, 17:42:46 »
I've had the opportunity to buy a Variable weight Topre and had a couple questions before I spend the cash, haven't had much luck searching for information. Now my question is if the Variable Topres (30,45,55) are complete uniform when you swap between the weight settings or if they are only 30g in certain "weak finger" keys. I've been looking for a dedicated gaming board (95% gaming, 5% chat messaging) as right now I have a CherryMX Red one and its alright but I've heard a lot of praise about Topre and wouldn't mind trying a lighter key press out.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA....

No... they're not variable in the sense that you can "adjust"

the keys that your pinky and ring finger handles are of the "lower weight" variety only, the REST are the same "heavier weight"

Topre is good because most people start out typing on rubber dome keyboards..

And so Topre also being rubber dome has a very "familiar" feel..

Topre is however improved in the sense that the key shaft is thick. So it provides a sturdy keytravel at more angles of key-strike, than standard rubber dome keyboards.

The only other improvement is that it activates without hitting the bottom like cherry mx.. This allows you to type more accurately and with less fatigue.

Um.. it doesn't really matter.. because for example i have a mx green in my spacebar and mx blues in my other switches..

But when i start typing fast.. I don't notice the difference in weight... because I'm focused on typing...

The same will happen with the weighted // unweighted keys...

Unless you're FEELING them out on purpose... it's not something you'll be thinking about when you type, because your fingers are capable of output FAR greater than that of 55g....

I would get which ever one is cheaper..

If you decide that you don't like the variable weight.. You can simply take the domes and swap them with the lesser used switches and create a completely uniform "BASE typing surface"

Only words of caution would be... Don't have unreasonable expectations.. it's a rubber dome keyboard.. that has good mechanical tolerance.  That's it....

I went into topre because there are people on this forum that are rabid fanbois and they fking think topre is the light of jesus christ...

I was sorely let down because of that... because I expected "jc"... that didn't happen.

So, yea... have realistic expectations of the keyboard you're about to buy.  :D

You will notice weight differences when sustaining keys like during FPS gaming. The WASD cluster is not all uniform which is unfortunate.

this is a non issue.. just a few keys over... all is well.

Now I'm disappointed  :'( I had read on a review on Topre somewhere that "you could electronically adjust where the key actuated" which made it sound as if the keyboard was completely adjustable, but oh well.

I've been rather disappointed with the Reds because the extra 2mm of bottoming out after actuation has grown rather frustrating lately, and a couple fumbles lately with some keys. I've tried using WASD o-rings but they don't seem to be sized right as I applied Black O-Rings to my WASD keys and they started sticking (pushing into the housing with the stem and getting stuck on the edge) and it felt as if they were slightly thicker then 40mm.

I wouldn't call forced remapping of every game to TFGH or whatever you use a non-issue. WASD out of the box is not uniform and not everyone wants to deal with software remaps

You might want to check out the "thick red" orings from IMSTO.

lifeisgood: If you like the browns, I would recommend the 45g; same actuation force and closest (relative term) feel.  I have a variable RF, and the 45g keys have a nice snap to them but are by no means heavy.

I just bought a bunch of o-rings that seem pretty thick compared to previous ones I've tried. Send me a PM if you're interested.

I'd just like to chime in here and say I'm typing on a variable at the moment and its quite nice to type on. That being said I used to use this board at home and really disliked it for gaming. If I had the choice, I'd go a 45g uniform, but for simply typing, the variable is really quite nice.
