Total Cleaning
« on: Fri, 29 March 2013, 03:04:33 »
Hi Geekhack, I have a question for you all today.

I am moving out in a few months and when I do I would like to completely clean my Ducky Shine Red MX Cherry Switch Full 104-key with Blue LEDs. I am going to take my keyboard completely apart and clean it, but I also want to soak my PCB and switches in some solvent to get every tiny little crack, so my question to you guys is... what solvent should I submerge it in? 100% isopropyl?

Don't submerge anything. Just wipe it down with a brush or blow it out with a Datavac.

I'm more curious if this is your default cleaning routine with all electronics?  I have never had the urge to dunk anything of mine.

I'll just echo what the others said: Don't dunk, just take off all the keys and give it a nice brush/air dusting.  If my memory serves me correctly, you also want to not try to soak the whole switches as to avoid trapping any crap in there and potentially mucking up the contacts.  Your PCB is plenty clean.

while technically if you allowed your pcb to soak in alcohol and allowed it to dry (72 hours) it wouldnt necessarily damage your board it will hurt the switches. they are lubed. this is important to the feel of the board. the alcohol will strip this away.

anecdote:  one time a long time ago (not that long ago) i accidentally got thermal paste all over a AMD processor (9950 black edition). i mean all up in it. all over the pins. it was a horror show. i took the cpu and soaked it in 100% alcohol for 24 hours and then let it dry.  it still works great to this day.

so my advice is just air vac or blow it out. the risk/reward of soaking it is not in your favor.

Also, low level electronics such as keyboards do not need to be clean...
