RAM issue
« on: Tue, 19 March 2013, 17:12:05 »
I noticed my tri channel RAM 3x 2GB was only showing in Windows (Win 7 64bit Ultimate) as 2GB so I trying changing the slots, and only could get the system to boot if one particular stick was in the first slot. So I assume the other two were shot and got a new 3x 4GB set. Now windows is only showing 4GB.

I just tried flashing the BIOS with the latest....no dice.

Any ideas?

What motherboard? Sounds like a slot issue, rather than a ram issue.....

This^ First how many GB are showing up in the bios? Second, the best way to do this is to test a single stick in each slot kinda like you did with the old memory and make sure you're pressing them in all the way.

Sabertooth x56 - They are all in the correct slot according to the manual.

Bios is only showing 4GB

I just tried them one at a time and the PC would not post until all 3 were in.

That's what it sounds like to me. You tried each stick in each slot? If they all are known working, I think you might be screwed.

Do you mean x58?
Because that motherboard is picky as hell (current rig), I tried a few different tri-channel ram sets before I got a Kingston set to work.
My ram is in the first set of slots.

What kinda RAM do you have?

Just got some Kingston Hyperx - it was on the list of supported RAM from the Mobo

I was just trying some different slots and I couldn't even get it to boot.  Then it said there was no power supplied to the GFX card which there was...

I think a Mobo replacement may be in my near future.

From my own experience with x58 you may need to test RAM sticks using 2 at a time; it should state proper testing methods in the manual, my R3F needed to be tested this way. There is also an issue with the pins in the CPU socket being easily bent (even being shipped out bent) which may cause RAM channels to disappear.

I thought I would necro this thread to give you guys the end of the story.

My Mobo was 2.5 years old, but the warranty is 3 years (Thanks Asus!) so I RMA'd it and got my replacement.

A little bit of sweat and maneuvering, and my new mobo is installed and all my RAM is registering!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions folks!
