CM Storm QFR compared to Keycool 84
« on: Tue, 27 August 2013, 21:42:05 »
Well then this seems awkward since its been so long since I've posted and I've just been lurking. But i'm just going to jump right into it i need your guys opinions to help me decide on a new keyboard.

Recently at the computer store i got to play with Cm storm's QFR. It was almost love at first touch I didn't like the switches it was using ((mx reds)) but its size just felt glorious in my hands. So I have some cash laying around and decided I wanted the QFR pretty bad. I love the buckling springs I've been using and i miss my alps but its alright. Whenever I'm gaming i seem to have issues hitting the keys like 567 and the f1-f4 keys easily. I feel like i need to re position/move my hand to much to hit them just to get it back into position. That's one of the main reasons I decided I wanted the QFR.

So browsing on amazon looking at more tenkeyless compact keyboards I ran into the noppoo mini but i decided after reading and such i'd rather have the QFR. So i kept looking and looking and eventually i ran into the Keycool84. It looks just about perfect with the way the f keys are right above the number keys without that little gap between them the QFR rapid has.

But I haven't ever really heard of keycool and I wasn't able to find much about them how it feels there durability or its spec size while with the QFR I could find its 14 x 5 x 1 I could not find anything like that on the keycool or many reviews on it.

So if any of you have tried both or own one of the other can you give me a quick run down on how they compare or what the cons might be with your's?

Thanks in advance.

Are you looking at the Keycool 84? The Keycool 87 has a gap between the function and number row.

There are very noticeable differences between the Keycool 87 and Quickfire Rapid. There are even differences between the Keycool 87 and Keycool 87.

The Keycool 87 has options for normal ABS keycaps, PBT keycaps and backlighting (ABS keycaps only). The Keycool 87 also may come with a weird spacebar stem spacing, but that may be fixed in newer versions.

I saw pictures of the fixed spacebar on the keycool, not sure if its legit though. I'll add the pics again when I find em.

KeyCool space bar compared to, er, Filco space bar actually, but on a QFR.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Hmm I don't think i mind the space bar much. I was more worried about build quality the issues I've read about blues not "clicking" etc. I like the keycool84 how the f keys are connected to the top row like the 1235 keys, tenkeyless its small size everything. But I haven't heard much about the brand. So if I'm going to be paying the extra 40 or so dollars just for that style I want it to be nice quality like the QFR which seems to be nice / highly recommended. The flashy lights and all of that are not very important to me but there alright I could easily do without or do a DIY myself for probably much cheaper if i really wanted lights.

I couldn't find another keyboard on amazon with the keycool 84 style.

That's the one i was looking at with the blue switches I haven't seen any other mechanical keyboard with a design like that on amazon really. Another thing I'm not sure how i feel about the keycool is if i wanted to replace the keycaps id need to find right ones so the led light can shine through etc like the stock ones do which seems like a pain.

I'm still up for recommendations of boards on amazon with the keycool84's layout style advice on the boards basically anything you have to offer about either of the boards which might help me make my decision. Thanks!
