Cherry MX clear
« on: Thu, 29 August 2013, 21:26:32 »
Ok so maybe I need to stay off the internet... I have discovered a plethora of keys. Particularly the MX clear. I found a ducky shine 2 http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=296
So yeah I found out I need to start collection now. I need browns and these. Anyone know if the ducky shine 3 will come with MX clear? If not I'll just get shine 2.

Shine 2 with clears is going to be hard to find.

I've still not seen any solid evidence of a shine 3 with clears.

I don't consider any keyboard that come with cherry mx-clears a good choice..

Because you just don't know if the stock clears will be "too much" force..

And on most boards, to do ergo clears, You have to desolder.. THIS is essentially the same as adding $100 worth of trouble to the mix.

You may as well get something that is moddable like the ERGODOX

Are they discontinuing the Clear? I was looking around some of the different parts houses, and one had their MX clears listed as no longer being available.

There were rumors on Deskthority and MechanicalKeyboards.com (ShakeR) a couple years back that Clears were end of life; but as you can see they are still somewhat available.

If Cherry wanted to simplify production they should axe browns and clears and make Ergo Clears.  There is a first time for everything but I've never seen anyone who preferred Browns over Ergo Clears.

Yeah, I like that idea of discontinuing browns  and creating ergo clears maybe a different color though for marketing purposes.
If I can't find any clears then I'll buy browns.

Thing is, we have a big gap between current ergo clears (max 65g) and stock clears / panda clears (both around 90g)
And as 65g clears still feel somewhat sticky I think 70g (or perhaps 75g) springs would give a nice balance...

Honestly they should just sell switches with 62g springs since that is widely more popular than stock clears (debatable but I keep seeing more boards with 62-65g korean springs than stock springs). This would save so much time and less mess ups desoldering (me XD). A board that comes with 62g korean springs and clears would be an amazing board. Especially if it was 60%.

When you are talking about spring weights, are you talking about the:
- Force at actuation point, with the spring in a MX Black switch?
- Force required to bottom out (any switch)?
- Maximum force before actuation, on the MX Clear?
- Force required to hover at actuation point, on the MX Clear?
... or something else?

Depends... Most (all?) custom springs are from Korea and are rated for total compression force (55g, 62g, 65g...) afaik -> Not mounted in a switch (technically the proper way to rate a springs force I think). Stock springs usually get called "stock *insert name*" or MX light (red, blue, brown) / MX heavy (grey, green, white) etc. But some people like to name em by actuation force, often mixing in stem/slider/leave resistance which is kinda confusing. Perhaps we should agree on a "standard" so things are less confusing? Things to consider: Total compression force is probably not the same as the bottom-out force (as the spring doesn't get fully compressed in the switch afaik... Also, consider the stem/slider/leave), the stem/slider/leave adds resistance (so without knowing how much is added, just stating the raw spring resistance wont tell you much about the resistance for actual usage), and springs are already compressed in neutral state when put into a switch (half switch travel doesn't equal half total spring force etc.). Would be nice to have raw stem/slider/leave force curves (as if there was no spring) and distance measurements from neutral -> end point (spring inside the switch) , because then we could create some calculator where you enter stem type and spring (rated the usual way) and it plots you a nice force/way diagram. >.>
