Jacked up Realforce 87u 55g Domes?
« on: Wed, 16 April 2014, 17:55:52 »
Hello GH,

I just bought a "mint" 55g 87u, and when I got it I was excited.  Switches are awesome, maybe not for everybody, but I love ALL switches.  Keyboards are so cool!

Well, actually, I think I only like switches when they are the ones I paid for.  Let me slow down, maybe I'm the one in the wrong here.  Basically, something felt off with this board.

When I got my KB the numlock and up arrow felt very light compared to the rest of the board, and almost 0 tactility as well.  Numlock felt like it could be the 30g domes people talk about, and up arrow either 30g or 45g.  I have no way to measure.  THe numpad's dome looks like it was very crudely cut, compared to the very precise cuts I've seen in pictures by other users.  Maybe both are just 55g's and I'm going paranoid here.

Opened it up to check out the domes, and this is what I found (camera busted on phone so had to use front cam...bad pictures)
Numlock:
More
Up arrow:
More
Full board:
More

Compared to the (few) other pictures I've seen, which are mostly full sheets of domes for the KB.  I think it was a post by Ripster either on here or another site and the domes in his RF 45g look very different from mine.

Has anyone else opened their 87u 55g and can verify if I got screwed over or if I'm just a paranoid cock?

Um... they're rated tolerance is  +/- 15grams so, wide margin to say the least..

this is not a precise instrument..

seems you might've gotten a - 15 switch..

The arrow cluster on all of my RF boards has always felt lighter.

When I was swapping out my 23u domes I noticed that if a dome got shifted at all while I was screwing the plate back on, it would result in a weird mushy feeling on that key. Maybe something similar is happening on your board. Have you tried putting it back together and feeling those keys again? It sounds unlikely that that would be the issue, but it's a possibility.

Ah.  This unsettling news is somewhat settling.  I'd rather be mad at Topre than an individual--seller seemed like a cool guy and I genuinely don't think he was trying to dupe me--perhaps he got duped first O.O

It was the cutout around the numlock that worried me more than the actuation force, though.  If it at least looked clean I'd assume it was just a defect.

It was the fact that the up arrow was its own dome that bothered me.  See Ripster's photo here:

It was the domes themselves that were light.  I tried actuating them w/o the plunger/key and they were VERY light compared to their neighbors.

Thanks for all the replies guys!  Even just talking about it gives me a bit more peace of mind x.x It's a nice board either way.

Those domes look like any other 55g domes I've seen.

It looks like the up arrow is a separate dome in that picture too.

Wait, so you pay the Topre Tax and they have more tolerance in the weight than MX Blues?
