Anybody know how to remap Insert/Delete on the FC660C on a Mac?
« on: Wed, 05 February 2014, 14:45:28 »
My FC660C arrived yesterday and I've been putting it through its paces. The dip switches allowed me to swap CTRL/CapsLock and Command/Option (Windows/Alt) out of the box, but the remapping app I've been using for other boards (KeyRemap4Macbook) doesn't provide many options for the Insert and Delete keys (they show up in the event viewer as Help and Forward Delete, respectively).

Anybody know of a solution? I'd really like to map them to something useful. Thanks.

KeyRemap4MacBook is awesome. But, I think you could try using his other tool "PCKeyboardHack" to change the Insert/Delete keys into something else.

PCKeyboardHack is a companion app to KeyRemap4MacBook. It does not allow to remap Ins. It's main use is to remap some keys at a very low level (kernel) because KeyRemap4MacBook does not have direct access to them (mainly CapsLock).

The OP needs KeyRemap4MacBook.

+1 For PCKeyboardHack/KeyRemap4MacBook. Been using them for years on my Macs, totally worth it.

The OP needs KeyRemap4MacBook.

That's what I'm using now, but it has no options for Insert that I can see (the Insert key only registers as "Help" on keyup according to the event viewer), and the options for Delete are limited (registers as "Forward Delete"). There's a tutorial on their site that demonstrates how to customize the XML file, so I'm going to hack at that later and see if I can get something working.

Good luck. I think you've got all the tools you need to do it now.

I would email the KeyRemap4Macbook guy.  I did that, and he helped me out big time.  He might add your desired option to the application.

Also, if you find the service useful, throw the man a donation for his time and effort.  It's a great application that has been very useful for many people.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

If I can get something working, I'll send him a snippet to incorporate into the app. If not, I'll ask him for some assistance.

Good point regarding the donation. I'm sure a lot of us use apps like this all the time and don't think to donate. Definitely going to do that.

I second the opinion about the KeyRemap4Macbook developer being an excellent dude. He's been helpful to me also.

For all the CPU usage buffs out there, does anyone know what amount of resources does KeyRemap4Macbook consume? I'm currently trying to cut the apps down to the essentials and I'm already using BetterTouchTool, which makes KeyRemap4Macbook only needed for the Insert key.

Very, very little. A tiny bit of RAM, and the probably only a minuscule amount of CPU cycles per keystroke.

I recently figured out a bunch of stuff re: customizing KeyRemap. What do you want to remap Insert and Delete to? I believe I can help  ;)

I managed to customize those 2 keys by adding some nodes to private.xml. Also fixed swapped right Cmd and Option keys. Pretty sweet.

I typed a bunch of gibberish at absurdly high speed into this reply field, and KeyRemap4MacBook's CPU usage never went above 0.2% in Activity Monitor. I'd say it's of no concern.

I would love some help with remapping (or actually enabling) the Insert key, without the need of an external program just for that. Just having another program running 24/7 on the background, with possible updates breaking compatibilities etc., I'd rather avoid it :) If anyone can help, I'm all ears! BetterTouchTool gives a "?" when pressing the Insert key on a OSX 10.9, it doesn't recognise the key.

Well, I don't think there's any way to avoid a software utility.  But KeyRemap4MacBook is a great program, I don't think you're gonna have any trouble with it. I'll be happy to help if you want to try.

I am using keyremap4macbook for this, this is actually not an external thing, it is just using the standard keyboard layout component of os x. So you can if you can just make a new layout and use that instead with ukulele... then no need for KR4MB, but is a very well maintained program and I would recommend it.
