The title basically says it all, how relevant do you think mechanical keyboards will be going into the future? Do you think we will always have some sort of external input device, or what do you think the future of input devices is? Im just wondering because it makes me sad when people say watches are becoming obsolete, so do you think big bulky keyboards are becoming obsolete?

I think they'll only get more popular

Considering how small the market is now, imagine what we could do with a huge market share

Yeah I was thinking about this and I'd agree. The huge number of boards released in the last year is a pretty big indicator that things are picking up speed.

Who would've believed me if I said Coolermaster was going to be making a Topre board with MX stems a year ago? People would have laughed....
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Well that makes me happy! I guess another question I have, we also seem to be moving towards these really streamlined and minimal designs, for example almost everyone I know would rather have a tiny scissor switch or some sort of infrared sci-fi keyboard, how will mechs adapt to fit into those kinds of roles? Or do you think that mechs being different from those keyboards is the appeal?

by keeping minimal designs out of the box with a large selection of easy customizations

no... slim compacts are just gimmicks...   for the n00bs...

Ergodox is the Ultimate form...

Mechanical keyboards will never die.  They are like the Terminator.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

The things I would do for an ergodox. . .except pay for one. . .

Do you think that there is a possibility of a more compact mechanical switch in the future? How long do you think cherry's reign over mechs will last?

Mechanical keyboards will never die.  They are like the Terminator.

They last forever--or at least until you submerge them in molten steel.

I think a beam spring or Model F might survive such as excursion.

someone never watched Child's-Play-3

Spoiler:

Chuck's blood gets into a vat of plastic which were made into new GoodGuy dolls, and his soul reincarnates in a new body..

Akin to how new terminators made from the Original Terminator metal would become repossessed with the Original Terminator's soul

WHICH does happen... because that terminator IS recreated in the future... and was sent back for exactly such event to cycle..

All this makes me imagine is the final scene of The Hobbit Two when smaug emerges from the pit of gold...your keyboard emerges from the pit in a shower of molten steel only looking better than when it entered :P

Since when does a "learning-computer" have a soul? It's still just GIGO. A soul is the "ghost in the machine", the thing that trains the neural network, outside of the system by necessity. It cannot come from inside the system.

Back on topic, mechanical keyboards will outlive most of us. Just think about how tough a Model M is and how nice it feels to use. They'd survive an apocalypse and inspire the creation of computers again, just so people can use them.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

I just can't wait until we get a mechanical switch that is so thin to the point where it could be used in laptops.

I hope mechanical keyboards stay forever... And I hope new switch variants (like Cherry MX and Topre) come out soon!
