Um... well....   what is the difference between a hoarder and a collector....

A hoarder is just some one who -more--indiscriminately-- keep things

a Collector, is someone who lets say, "curates",

You won't find any 1.5gb 1080p files in my collection... 1080p material starts at 16GB

Everyone is going to call me crazy, but I've never seen a huge difference between 720 and 1080. In fact, I probably couldn't tell you which is which unless they were side by side. Above 1080 I do see a noticeable difference from 720 though.

Not true.. I've seen over 2,400 movies at this point in my life..  I only have ~500 movies saved..

1080p only @ 16GB and above...

I don't get it either, mostly after I've watched a movie and I've deemed it "meh." I will delete it (after a generous amount of time seeding ofc.).

It depends on your screen and how far away you are from it. That said, I see if a graphic is off by one pixel on 1080p on a 23" screen (I have to do some UI design at uni and I tend to be a perfectionist with that stuff) and I can definitely tell a difference between 720p and 1080p, even if it's on a bigger screen and I'm a bit further away from it.

The reason resolution and high bitrate (file size) is important, is because on a flat surface image, the eye relies predominantly on CONTRAST as a depth queue..

The higher quality file lets your visual system (eye/brain) detect edges more easily..

on a low res 720p, low bitrate file (<12Gb), what happens is, edges that are closer in brightness become 1 brightness, because the codec has determined that this information is not large enough of a difference for file size's sake..

The compression greatly reduces texture fidelity, which means more work for your brain to find depth in what you see..

so the LQ file will look flat and at times blurry.

I'll rather pay a hundred bucks for what? 1-3 TB harddrive and download ****load of series than buy the actual DVDs. Pretty much any given show is like 10 bucks for a season. That being said, I'm content with the ****ty 200-350 MB an episode rips.

Movies I usually don't bother with.

Why are you saving Linux isos? I used to do that with them on optical media, but lately I've realized there is no point in doing so. You can always download an iso of an older version if you need it. Many of the mirrors keep old version isos archived.

um... well Cost hasn't been an issue... it's just way better on a drive vs Optical..  way more accessible and seek-times are better.

a complete netflix 90minute movie is anywhere from 3GB to 7GB

VS

16GB to 36GB on Bluray for the same movie..

The difference between nflix and Bluray is pretty large..

Go ahead.. pull up Terminator 2 on your Nflix, pick any shot.. and I'll match it from my drive.. and we can compare..

There is a difference in quality.

It's not just resolution. Compression factors in, too.

Resolution can be more of a problem once you factor in screen size and distance from the screen.

backup is only necessary if the drives are always spinning.. that's not really the case for me..  and all my drives are open air.. outside of the case, and have a 120mm fan per 3-4 drives when they do run.  never get above 45C..

Whereas inside drives typically run 50 C idle and 60-80C load.

:horse****:

the likely hood that a drive fails take into account the Length of time they're being used..

since my drives are hardly ever even on.. backup is unnecessary..

I might as well just buy a whole new set of drives in 20 years. and copy them over.. instead of dropping dime now to have a duplicate which will site right next to the original NOT turned on..

I only have a 120g hard drive. That's all. And after OS installed, this mean only 65g or so are free for real use. I won't say I never considered getting more space, but the only thing that changed is that I now delete the stuff I have watched instead of keeping it for no reason until I need space and delete it.

well, the issue for me was primarily seek time.. because if I rewatch a movie, I wouldn't rewatch the whole thing.. I'd skip around..  on bluray this was a chore... and not very responsive...

also.. if you only have 65g free, then you can really only hold 1 bluray at a time because you still need space for paging/workspace and other programs.. which means, you must delete it to swap for a second one.

the time it takes to dl the typical NEW bluray is 2-3 hours..  that makes it difficult to coordinate when you'd watch the movie..

For Catch and Release style watching.. I recommend at least 3TB of storage..

because sometimes, to get large torrents, you have shotgun many torrents at once, most of which are dead..  so you're looking at instances where you're trying to allocate 300-500GBs

On average you are correct TP. In practice HDs fail unexpectedly all of the time. You can turn a brand new hard drive on and a head will fail, or motor, or controller, or actuator arm, etc. It happens all of the time.

Well as far as Extreme premature death.. I do test my new drives for at least a week with eraser, so if it survives that, it's pretty solid as far as premature death goes..

Then for say 1 Month + failures..  These drives get used maybe 3 days (72hrs) in a whole year.. so.. Even assuming I got  a drive where this will happen..  I got a good 3-4 years before that happens..

I might do a complete backup if prices hit 70/3TB  but I highly doubt I'll be able to get 45TBs worth @ that price.
