I've worked on too many lenovos to recommend them to anyone. That said, the X220 and X230 are some of the best computers lenovo has made. Well some of the least bad at any rate.

Dells business line is usually a lot heavier, but they can withstand a drop and daily beatings a lot better. I wouldn't recommend them to everyone. I don't think they really have something that's quite like the X220.

HP's business line (elitebook) is currently the best and what I recommend to everyone. When they refreshed their lineup lastyear they went from the worst to one of the best. You can get a used one that's still in warranty on eBay for like 50% less or something. Super good deal. I would say they easily surpass the X220/X230 in quality, repairability and design. HP isn't the greatest company, but they don't upmark their spare and replacement parts like Lenovo does either ($100+ for a "thermal module" (fan) is approaching and often exceeding Sony pricing)

Did your X220 develop overheating issues?

My laptop is squeaky clean..  the overheat issue only happens when the cooling chamber becomes dust-bound.

I'll admit the way the lenovo x2xx are designed, they tend to become plugged up quite easily due to the small air inlet @ the bottom.

But nothing a dis-assembly couldn't clear up.

I'm still using AS5 on the thing.

I also used Johnson Johnson baby oil to lubricate the fan bearing.. So my laptop smells awesome when it gets warm..

This is why so many of the other brands included a removable dust filter: so people could easily ensure their thermal module didn't become all clogged up with dust.

Baby oil does nothing for magnetic bearings that HP, dell, etc. use. Not that they were quality, but at least the fans were nice.

well small form factor impeller fans are usually all sleeve bearing..  so i just put some baby oil in there once a while to keep it wet-ish..

+ it smells nice..

dust filters help, but overall I think the issue is  internal clogging.. if you got pets or floor rug.. overtime, the space right after the impeller gets fluffed up..  you can't dig that out from the outside. gotta disassemble.

It's a shame that not many laptop manufacturers are interested in the business-class ultraportable anymore, with the advent of [useless] tablets.

I've shopped around and I still think the x220 is the last good example of the form factor.

I would get the x240.. but it's not really much of an upgrade from the x220...

I've been using an x230 since it came out and still love it as much as the day I bought it.  The only problem I've ever had with it is the screen started to develop "bright spots" in some areas, but Lenovo promptly sent an IBM technician to my house to replace the screen. Is the x series lineup at Lenovo ultrabook only now?

I have been a thinkpad user for years and was at the point of purchasing a new laptop last year and spent a lot of time looking around. I ended up getting a T440p. I am a coder and use it everyday for quite a bit of work. The changes Lenovo made to the thinkpad line have been controversial for sure, here's my take on a couple
New keyboard - I like it. There are people who would shoot me for saying that, but I still think its better than any other laptop keyboard I have used.
New trackpad with integrated trackpoint buttons - trackpad with gestures is great. Integrated trackpoint/mouse buttons suck entirely. Its a crap shoot whether a button click will be registered, and when it does, you have to be careful where you hands are or you might get a right when you intended a left click. The noise from the act of clicking the pad sucks too.

The two reasons I ended up staying with the thinkpad despite Lenovo are the keyboard feel and the TrackPoint. So few laptops have a pointing stick anymore.

I've opened up this thing several times.. They could definitely put more stuff in here LOL.. so much empty space..

Does the x240 allow for 1866mhz ram like the x220

Yeah a new trackpad, keyboard and a hardware refresh wouldn't do it for me either. For other ideas, the Japanese manufacturers (Sony, Toshiba, etc) seem to be keeping small laptops alive but those models might be difficult to get stateside and probably wouldn't be as solid/powerful as the X-series.

Awesome customer service story! :) They have the X1 Carbon ultrabook but will hopefully keep the 12.5" model alive for at least a few more years.

x1 carbon is a step back in the WRONG direction Trying to make laptops pretty by reducing its utility..

x240 can pull 12 hours with serious use on the 3+6 cell..

x1 maybe 3 hours tops..

not really, the HDD takes up a lot of space so they can keep it so thin. The wifi card area has a slot for an SSD, so that space is taken as well. Basically the only remaining space is for the battery under the screen or the upper left area for the fan/heatsink, and there's nothing you'd really want to put there.

The X2*0 series can run for absolute ages with that massive battery you caa get for it.

As far as the size, I like it. HP is going in that direction as well, and apple is already there with the MBPr13". I think a small-ish business-class computer is the way to go for sure.

Dell makes some decent comptuers, but I don't think you'll want any of them moving from the X220. That's why I recommend another company like HP instead.

I'm rocking the 9470m with a horrible and soon-to-be-replaced screen. I recommend highly avoiding the 1366*768 screen at all costs.

Looks like they have a 9480m which is a little nicer.

The 1040 G1 looks like it's on a similar platform and should be nice, though I've not used it.

If I got one today it would be an elitebook 840 (14") with the msata SSD and a 1600*900 display. I will likely be updating my display with a 2560*1700 one sometime in the future.
