Feedback on Deskthority's user Ascaii
« on: Sun, 11 January 2015, 17:52:26 »
Hi guys!

I'm about to close a sell with Ascaii and I'm wondering if he's trustworthy. He seems like so but you never know. He has over 2000+ messages on DT over 4 years. He has already run at least 2 group buys for them. I guess a scammer wouldn't have made it this far in there community. I wonder because I'm thinking about using Gift payment through Paypal.

Here is a link to his profile: http://deskthority.net/ascaii-u61/.

So if anyone has ever conclude a sale with him, I'll be happy to hear about your experience. Thanks.

He is trustworthy. Go ahead and pay him as a gift.

He is, however, quite a busy guy. So, shipping/responses might take a while.

Never ever use 'gift' payment through paypal if you’re buying something, it’s just not worth it. Just calculate the fees and add that quantity to the amount. The fee is the same either way, but the 'gift' option gives you no protection if something goes wrong.

I don't know if it is the same in the same US but here in the EU there are no fees for Gifts payments.

He means always take the precaution and add the extra fees for a "goods" payment.  There are never any fees regardless of where you are for gift payments, but once you send the funds, there's no way to dispute anything with PayPal should things go awry.

Yeah you are right. I think the little economy is not worth the hassle if things go wrong.

Ascaii is very trustworthy. I've bought from him before, and had zero problems. Although as was said earlier, I believe he has been busy lately, so shipping might be just a bit delayed at times.

That said, never pay as gift unless you're just sending money to a friend. For everything else, add the fees and send that amount as goods. I do this even with people I trust. It just helps both parties.

If you use a credit card, there are fees, and it’s basically the same whether you use 'gift' or 'goods', just in the gift case the buyer pays.

If you use your paypal balance or ACH for domestic 'gift' transactions within the US (not sure exactly in Europe or or international transactions) then there’s no fee.

Sorry for the confusion. I always use a credit card with paypal, and always pay as 'goods'.

If you always pay with the Goods payment why not getting the buyer protection if it is the same price? The only reason I wanted to paid through Goods is to spare the fees.

I think you’re getting confused between 'goods' and 'gift'. There are basically 3 choices here:

1. Pay as 'goods'. paypal charges the seller a 2.9% + 30¢ fee (deducting from the amount). buyer gets some protection out of it, and sellers can relay a shipping tracking number through paypal, to help streamline dispute resolution
2. Pay as 'gift', using a credit card. paypal charges the buyer a 2.9% + 30¢ fee (calculated on top of the amount, so this fee ends up actually amounting to like 0.1% less), no buyer protection
3. Pay as 'gift', using paypal balance or a bank account. no fee, no buyer protection

I advocate always using option #1 for purchases of goods. If you are actually just giving money to a close personal friend, go ahead and use #3.

To make up a concrete example, imagine we want to buy something and the seller wants $100 for it. Three options:

1. Pay $103.30 as 'goods', paypal charges the seller a $3.30 transaction fee, and the seller gets $100. Buyer is protected
2. Pay $100 as 'gift' using a credit card, so paypal charges the buyer an extra $3.20 fee: buyer pays $103.20 and seller gets $100. No protection.
3. Pay $100 as 'gift' using paypal balance / bank account. No fees. No protection.

Alright I did confuse myself. Yeah in that case it is better to just use the #1 as you get the protection for pretty much the same price. I didn't register my bank account on Paypal, I just registered my payment card. So I guess if I went with the Gift payment system, I would have been charged the fees (#2).

Thanks for the clarification. It is the first time I pay with Paypal without doing it through an external website.
