Keyboard impartiality

We all have our trusted daily keyboard but since we're obsessive compulsive sociopaths we love to try out new stuff.

How impartial are you when:
1) Trying out new switches
2) Trying out new keyboards

How fair do you think you are rating switches and keyboards and when you are comparing and contrasting?

What do you think the best to way to be impartial and fair is?

Honestly I'm pretty decided now. Would be nice to try Topre but I just don't have that kind of cash for a stock board, apart from that I've tried all the MX switches and I know that 62g Clears are the switch for me. Lubed or unlubed, so long as they've got 62g's then I'm a happy man.

I do like complicated white Alps switches but finding a full ANSI keyset that don't look like ass is pretty tough. Even if I could find a set I doubt I could be bothered finding enough decent switches in addition to the already hard to find Duck PCBs.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Rate MX against MX

Topre vs Topre

ALPS vs ALPS

Otherwise its comparing roundness or an orange vs sweetness of an apple.

Unless you've never typed on a keyboard before there will likely always be some bias as it seems natural for people to compare what they know to the unfamiliar.

I disagree, because roundness and sweetness don't do the same thing, nor are they commensurable. Keyboard switches are ALL designed to do the exact same thing and as such you can have the functions all three of them provide with any one - the roundness of an orange and the sweetness of an apple therefore don't apply to this case. Sure, the feel is very different, but that would be akin to saying you can't compare apples and pears in terms of their flavour while obviously you can.

I'm a keyboard slut. I'll use anything if I like it. The keyboard I'm typing this on has Cherry ML switches, my model M 1391401 is on a table behind me, in the other room is a keyboard with MX browns connected to another computer, and I even have a rubber dome keyboard that I like a *lot*.

[EDIT] ...forgot about the XT model F on the shelf...

But, I don't work in an office and have no friends who are into keyboards. I'm not trying to impress anyone and the only opinion which counts is mine. :)

Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I notice you still have MX blacks.
Clearly you are not partial enough.

I'm honestly pretty biased. Linears I'll give a few pokes and shrug and still not like linears. Tactile switches get more attention from me and I'll actually give them some time.

I think all switch types have their strengths and weaknesses and any comparisons are completely subjective.

Absolutely right...

I am completely impartial to switches..

They make zero difference in my hands.. My skills as a GH scrub (135wpm) level already greatly exceed the influence of switch timings..

I can dynamically adjust my strike-rate to gel with any switch..

At the highest concentration for speed, I am ignoring all sensation from the switch.

and the turth is..

I am impartial to trying out new keyboards, because honestly, there hasn't BEEN any new keyboards..

It's just been the same rectangle released over and over again..

and even in the SPLIT keyboard frontier.. we've only seem minor rehashes..

I think OOBLY is the only one making any potential waves on something (NEW)..

I have learned that key switches, like music, may take a while to get used to. It is only after enough use/listening that you can form an opinion that is not biased by the first impression.

A switch that is new to you may have a small quirk that you notice instantly when you try it out the first time. But how important is that quirk really?: is it very important or will you not notice it when typing normally? It is like when you compare two options and use weighted variables - determining those weights could make all the difference.
It is also possible that typing on this switch is supposed to be completely different than the style that you are used to, and you will have to learn this style before you properly understand the switch and how it is good.
