Monthly rents in San Francisco are more than I pay for a year
« on: Wed, 04 March 2015, 16:48:01 »
So I saw this article:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/youre-moving-san-francisco-housing-190716487.html

One-bedrooms are listed for $3000-$5000 PER MONTH.  Craigslist seems to have some cheaper listings, but still pretty high.   I pay somewhere between $3600-$4800 PER YEAR depending on how many people we have in the house.

What the heck is going in the Bay Area?  Where do you live if don't work in the tech industry making six figures?
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

You don't especially if you didn't move into before this bull****.
If you were here before you probably have some kind of subsidizing or rent control in SF at least.
Also you can live in ****holes like cal or Oakland and commute to SF on BARF

LOL , you're gonna need a 3-4 as the starting number of that six figure to live @ $5000 a month.

otherwise.. you might as well take an easier job and make exactly the same amount.

Your rent is $400 a month because no one wants to live in Indiana ;)

I currently pay $1275 a month + electric and utilities for a 425sq ft studio near Seattle. Literally the cheapest place to rent solo on the Eastside. There's 1 bedrooms downtown that go for $800 a month, but I pay the extra $600 or so for the convenience of time and location.

Yeah, SF rents have gone crazy. The problem is that none of the little suburban towns in the peninsula/south bay are willing to build any denser housing (like, their whole towns are zoned for 1–2 story buildings with no more than 2 units per building and required reserved parking spaces, it’s absurd), but keep adding more office jobs. As a result there are increasing numbers of people commuting every day from SF to palo alto / mountain view / sunnyvale / cupertino / etc. There’s a housing shortage all over the Bay Area, and prices are rising commensurately.

The other big problem is that the mass transit infrastructure (while good compared to most of the USA) basically sucks compared to real cities like you’d find in Europe or East Asia.

It is insane up there.  My little brother got his 1300 sq ft fixer upper house a little over a year ago in Mounyain View for $980k.   That was the cheapest he could find by quite a bit.  Both he and his wife work there.
wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

Everyone I know who works in SF lives in Oakland or out by MV which is still crazy expensive, and even employers are starting to realize the ridiculous prices. A lot of tech companies and studios have been moving away from the central Bay Area for this very reason.

My brother lives out there and recently moved. Not sure what he wound up paying, but I know he couldn't find a 2 bedroom for under 2k.

I used to travel to SFO about 3-4 times a year on business. Once I asked my car service driver how much my house (900 sq ft 2 bed, 1.5 bath townhouse) would cost up there. He said at least $750k. That blew my mind.

Hell, I can get that for under 100k here.

You are exaggerating a little there. How much is rent for your house (not what you pay)? I have a niece in college who pulls that **** to justify living in a $2500-$3500 a month luxury apartment with her friends..."oh, I only pay $800 a month in rent"...right...

I had to live with my parents. My first apartment was $350-$400 and that was a struggle. This was close to the turn of the last century; not that long ago.

SF rent is insane.  Surrounding areas get less insane with distance from SF, but are still really expensive.  If you want to do the traditional family with kids + house + dog thing around here you have to live in the sticks or have two high-5 or 6-figure incomes.

Just saw a news story tonight that the average "detached" home prices in the GTA (Toronto) have jumped up past $1,000,000. I don't think I'll be retiring here.
