External Hard drive help anyone?

I'm stumped as of now. In ubuntu I make folders and toss pictures into them and videos. However on windows that folder is non existent.

Well I can mount the hard drive on both OS's. But once I go into the drive itself, folders that I've made on ubuntu are hidden. I've tried going in windows and changing it to show hidden files but no dice.

I think you may have that virus worm/ torjan, that hides folders and spreads itself when you click on stuff

Could be.. But also another folder that had the same issue showed up eventually some day.

Isn't there **** shut about the formatting?

Try creating a partition on the external and format the new partition as NTFS.

I think Ubuntu normally uses ext3 or ext4 (if that's even what they are called. I don't use Linux) and that might not be a readable format for windows

Do a small partition like 1gb or something

I'll play with it a bit. But as of now, the drive is in NTFS.

Unless I am missing something, I didn't think windows could see stuff from a drive formatted for Linux.

If that's the case then that's something I learned. 
I never reformatted the drive when installing ubuntu and just plugged it in and used it.

Unless things have changed, Linux support for NTFS has always been shaky.

Can you try typing the directory name into the address bar of Windows Explorer.

I dont have much that would help with your issue, but personally on drives that i use on both windows and linux systems, i tend to format them in either FAT32 or extFAT and dont have any issues, and i usually format them in windows. I dont usually format any drives that i use on both OS's in linux or as ext 3/4 ets...

In my experience Ubuntu has been happy with NTFS. FAT32 works great except that it will choke on files larger than 2GB (movies).

I used to have a program that let Windows see something like ext3 but it was shaky, like they said, and maybe even read-only, I can't remember exactly.

I haven't really ha an issue with NTFS on any of the distros i use either.
