New guy here has a few questions
« on: Wed, 12 July 2017, 05:00:07 »
Hello folks, new guy here as the title states. My name is Mike, nice to meet you all!  :D So, I'm into PCs in general and lately I started getting into deep with keyboards as well. I currently own a Corsair K90, Corsair K95(first edition that came out) both with Cherry Reds, Razer Blackwidow X chroma and I just yesterday got an A-Jazz Geek AK33 with Zorro blues. So I have been playing on my AK33 for about a day now and I love it! Now, I'm thinking of actually getting a 60% keyboard as well but I don't know if it's worth it to give 100+$ for a Vortex Pok3r. I can always get a PCB for a 60% keyboard and get all the other stuff needed and do the assembly myself. Which one is better do you think? The second question regards switches. I will most probably change the switches of the AK33 and the K95 of mine and I was thinking of throwing on Gateron Greens and Zealios purples respectively. What do you think about those switches? I generally like clicky switches.

Thanks in advance and I will definitely see you around!  :thumb:  ;D

Well, the Pok3r is a pretty good value as it comes with a solid aluminum case. You can get an aluminum case for your build as well, but the total cost will probably end up more than a Pok3r. Then you also get more programmability with the build. I'd personally go for a custom build, despite it potentially costing more.

You said you liked clicky switches, so I just wanted to note that Zealios are tactile switches. Just thought I'd mention that in case you weren't aware. But yea, those switch choices are fine. One thing to note is that if your keyboards have LEDs, I'd imagine those would be tough to resolder back on afterwards.

Hello, thanks for the replies. Yea I noticed that zealios are tactile, doesn't matter though. I was also thinking of getting Greetech Blues for my AK33 as Gateron greens are too heavy I think. Didn't try them out but they say it needs 80g which I guess it's heavy. Do you guys know any site in EU that sells switches?

I'm kind of in the same boat as you, in that I don't know what I'm going to like yet.  Unfortunately it's hard to predict what you'll like, so eventually you'll have to try everything that seems promising.  Or at least I will. That goes for switches, keycap profiles, keycap materials, layout.  For me a switch tester just will not tell me if I'm going to like the switch - I need them on a full board and to type on it for awhile.  A keyboard meetup is the best place to try out a bunch of different keyboards in a short space of time if you can find one near you.  Fortunately there's decent resale value for most stuff on mechmarket, and you see a lot of custom boards there with more exotic switches, or just the switches themselves.

I do really like Pandas and Zealios.  To me they do make a difference, even though I'm not a connoiseur.  But I still have more stuff to try.  Unfortunately for me I have to really discover the "best" for me, instead of just good enough.  Fun but expensive and time consuming.

I would recommend trying Blacks, Clears, Zealios, Pandas (although it's linear and I didn't think that would be my bag they actually feel great!), and of course Blues and Greens if you like the click.  And then of course Halo True and Halo Clear when they're available hopefully later this year.  Personally I'm staying away from Alps and Topre for fear I might like them!

I was worried whether I would like the 60% layout, but it turns out I do so far, which is nice because then for future experimentation everything's a little less expensive and less soldering.  I think I would like to have dedicated arrow keys, though, so maybe a WhiteFox or FC660M would be better at some point, but then you have fewer case replacement options.

Enjoy!

There's CandyKeys, I believe they're based in Germany. They don't have a huge selection though, outside of Gateron switches.

Hey Mike (AKA Dopa) – Welcome to the wacky MK world! I can't advise you on 60% boards, as I've never owned one (not having the brainpower to remember all those extra key combinations, yuk yuk).

But the Corsair K90's a fine board. Mine (with MX Reds) was the first MK I owned. It was also the first board—as you may or may not know—with the simple, futuristic exposed switch design so many other board makers have since copied. The heavy aluminum case really turned heads when it came out, too; it's one solid board.

Some peeps here may look down on such boards—even pioneering ones like the K90—because they're not custom or rare or punky enough. So be it. I just hope that whichever 60% you end up with is as well-made as your Corsair.

The second question regards switches. I will most probably change the switches of the AK33 and the K95 of mine and I was thinking of throwing on Gateron Greens and Zealios purples respectively. What do you think about those switches? I generally like clicky switches...

I was also thinking of getting Greetech Blues for my AK33 as Gateron greens are too heavy I think. Didn't try them out but they say it needs 80g which I guess it's heavy.

I read so many good things about Gateron Greens, I went out of my way to find a board with them. (It wasn't easy, either... There are many Chinese MX clones floating around these days, and some board makers just slip in whatever they happened to have gotten a good deal on lately, regardless of what their product descriptions say.) And I gotta say, I love it, love it, love it.

You can't go entirely by a switch's pressure rating; its smoothness, and the characteristics of its force curve, make a big difference. I have a board with Cherry MX Greens, too, and I'd rather use the Gaterons. They're rated at the same force, but I find the Cherrys fatiguing after a while. The Gaterons feel better right away, and I find I can type on them indefinitely without tiring. It's a mysterious (and probably personal) thing, but I do think GG's are worth a try if you get the chance.

Thanks for your responses! I'm currently looking for shops in Europe that can ship mechanical switches for my upcoming 60% (or even a 40%) MK. I'm currently looking into Greetech blues and Gateron Greens so does it happen for you guys to know any shop in Europe that has those switches? I will most probably grab the parts myself around and maybe make a plexi case for it.

The shop I linked to has Gateron Greens. I don't see Greetech switches very often, but I did find them here. Ships from Asia though.

I prefer tactile switches to clicky switches, but of the clicky switches I've tried (MX blue/green, Gateron blue/green, Kailh blue, Fosen aquamarine), the Fosen are my favorite. They're essentially blues, but the downstroke feels a tad heavier to me and the sound of the click is deeper (less plastic-y).

I got some from the GB here on GH last year. I ended up swapping them into a WASD V2 for my brother because he favors MX blues (and he liked the Fosen more). It seems Fosen has tweaked the design a little and it's been problematic, but there looks to be a GB of sorts brewing on reddit for the original version.

I will list a few observations.  I liked the Gateron switches.  However, when I purchased them separately to build a board I found that they all pinged most terribly and were unusable.  The Poker 3 and the Leopold FC660 are my favorite stock keyboards with cherry switches.

My experience has been I've purchased about 10 boards and use about 2 of them most of the time.  I can't seem to bring myself to part with the others and use them occasionally.
KPB V60 Gateron Browns and Leopold Keycaps.  Poker 3 with Gateron Browns and Poker keycaps.  Poker 3 with Cherry MX Browns, ABS keycaps and white LED's.

Leopold FC660M- my new favorite, right out of the box.

After using alot of mx stuff than switching to topre than back and forth all the time its almost like you start to have a midlife crisis about rubber domes I mean dell rubber domes feel like topre but topre doesn't feel like dell domes and bad mx feels worse than cheap domes but topre feels to soft sometimes . its the circle of life

We don't even mind that you referred to yourself in the third person. Usually, it can be a sign of multiple personality disorder, but people who collect MKs tend to have little personality at all.
