HTC Vive & other VR
« on: Mon, 29 February 2016, 18:00:53 »
Now that the Vive is available for pre-order anyone here getting it? Kinda tempted but I kinda want to wait on game releases before dropping $800 on the thing.

Really intrigued by the room tracking though  :-\

Just ran their SteamVR benchmark and passed nicely. Really would love one, but I'll be waiting until the 2nd generation comes out. Really love the Vive's external camera though. Apparently you can use it to give you a sort of holographic overlay in-game of the room around you so you don't run into a wall, get motion-sick, etc.

What I *really* want is to get one to bring to work and use a gigantic virtual monitor.

Also would have trouble justifying $800, so perhaps the next generation is a little more reasonable. I'd like to think Gear VR would be worth it, but I just can't imagine the fidelity would be even close to what I'd want.

I'll just say that every single independent developer I've talked to about VR is excited about the possibilities but has zero interest or intention on developing anything for it. I think you will find the software libraries to be either barren or full of trashware made by people looking for a quick buck. The buyout and fan disservice that Oculus recently caused has made a lot of people back away from pursuing long-term investments in further development projects for VR technologies.

The Hololens has some possibility as it's functionality lies beyond just that of video games and checking your Facebook in 3d.

I had the Gear VR for a bit and it was really nice for the price, but I ended up returning it as the phone screen was just giving me headaches :/

It got me on board with the VR thing though. Can really see how it'd be good with the proper hardware behind it.

This is the biggest worry of mine and most likely what will keep me from being an early adopter.

I'm really interested in the Hololens as well but don't really know much about it. I'm mostly interested in VR tech for the gaming side and the immersion it would give. Would the Hololens be able to deliver the same kind of experience? I've only seen that one Minecraft demo of it, and it seems to add things to the real world rather than dropping you into a virtual one.

Also at $800 the price is pretty high but honestly it's about the same price as some of the high end monitors so it's no completely outrageous :p
