Contemplating Keyboard Retirement
« on: Mon, 06 June 2016, 19:08:37 »
So this idea has been floating in my head more and more of late. I'm not sure if it's the lack of time to interact with the community over the last month, or what, but I'm starting to feel disinterested in keyboard related things. Anybody else ever feel that way?

It comes and goes, I take it as a sign to focus on a different hobby for the time being, eventually I'll find my way back here!

Take a break if you feel you aren't interested anymore.

I took a 2 year break recently because I stopped caring also.

Now there's all these new awesome caps out, and I just had to trade for them..

Also turns out, when you hold onto your caps for 2 years, they eventually become more valuable haha.

So thats cool.

I havent been around long, but I definitely went through a spell, just got into gardening because of spring, and a month later, I had inspiration for another project.

Even selling some stuff can get you interested again, seeing what else is out there.

Nah, it's probably just a lull. Happens in almost every hobby. If you need some things, sell them, but not things you'll see yourself regretting.

I'm more or less retired from Keyboards...

I think the only thing interesting for the past 2 years is that 1.5mm corsair switch..

Everything else has been rehash...

I've only been around for five months but I can totally understand how some lose the drive for this hobby. "Just do you."

Yes.

It comes and goes, just do what feels right to you.  I have times where I need to step back for a bit, but then come back just as enthusiastic as ever.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Doesn't seem to go away for me, but that's probably because of dissatisfaction. Basically, there isn't anything out there that actually has all of my "must haves", so I just keep buying more and more keyboards to try and ease my discontentment with novelty.

If you're happy with what you've got, though, fading out would be perfectly reasonable.

I feel you, bro.

I've been afk for a while. I love my Model F and I just never use other boards.

I also made the mistake of getting into fountain pens which lol goodbye forever money. But having multiple pens is easier to work with and takes less space. No plugging and unplugging or moving an aircraft carrier then wrestling my ErgoDox from its case. I just put down my TWSBI Eco and pick up my Montblanc 146 and start writing.

I feel the same way sometimes. I want to take a step back but then another artisan sale comes then I'm in again. But loses the raffle then I contemplate on stopping. Then the vicious cycle ensues.

Glad to know I'm not alone. I've kind of gotten to the point where I don't care what keyboard I use. I haven't unplugged my Logitech G410 in a couple of months now. Heck, I haven't even done anything with my TGR Jane CE I got other than plug it in to make sure it works.

This is honestly an eventuality for everyone,  because the limitation to keyboarding is very simply the PERSON, rather than the keyboard..

The technology as is , already exceeds any person's capacity to physically utilize.

I have made the mistake of using a 122-key terminal as my daily driver for at least 3 years now, and I have acclimated myself to the extra keys.

And I don't even use F15-F19, I have never reprogrammed them and don't know what they would do. But the left function keys are essential now, there are half a dozen in the top row that I use all the time, and I now find it hard to use even a 101/103/104 layout any more, much less an 87.

If you are looking to get out, either stockpile a lifetime supply of what you like, or re-program yourself to a permanent standard.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

I often run into this sort of "hobby burnout", and I find the best medicine is to set that hobby aside completely. Make no plans to return, don't think about it, don't bookmark stuff for later, set it all on a shelf and drop it like a bad habit and move on to other things. Eventually you may regain an interest in it after enough separation, though it may not be the same as before. If not, you'll one day find all this stuff and either hock it all for some fun-money, or you'll revisit it for the nostalgia and that will be a hook into rekindling the interest. If you try to force yourself to maintain interest, or drop it half-assed, you will continue to burn out (if more slowly), and you will hinder any future re-interest.

The main reason I was interested in keyboards was that I have one in front of me most of the time; therefore, that alone obliges me to find a good one. Meanwhile I should type, I need to look for the best experience possible, that is why I return, even when burned. You will come back, sooner, or later.

I feel the same way. You might want to visit DT, specifically the Remodeling the Model M thread. Between that and the F62/F77 group buys, I don't think the Model F has been this hot since 1985!

Oh, and back on topic, I've drifted away and come back a few times. Mainly I keep coming back because there's no one IRL who understands my love of keyboards and the satisfaction of using the perfect one.

Me too buddy. Keeping up with the Joneses is too damn hard, and there's always something better around the corner. Good for hobby, bad for wallet + free time.

Also, if you do decide to stop you can always stay active with the community. I haven't purchased a keyboard this year (save for one PCB) and enter for only one artisan per raffle. Helps keep me somewhat sane, and leaves me for more time to crap-post.
