Is Now A Sport
« on: Wed, 03 August 2016, 15:46:52 »
Skateboarding is going to be part of the 2020 Olympics. I said skateboarding is not a sport and I was wrong :-X

Skateboarding is now an international sport -- what do you think about that? End of the world or what?

If snowboarding is a sport, why wouldn't skateboarding. .

Olympics REALLY doesn't give the definition of a "sport", mate :p . You should see some of the "sports" that used to be in there :p .

Pretty rare for someone to be arrested for skateboarding. Usually its people who are trespassing, defacing and vandalizing property, and loitering in unallowed areas that forget all that and think the police are arresting them for physically skateboarding. More like they're waxing someone's concrete steps and hand rails where they don't have permission to be, and bringing in the ruckus the skateboarding culture often brought.

Skateboarding has always been a sport; it just isn't easily measured with sport-type metrics. Determining who wins is really subjective and more-so than most.

Some cities have zero tolerance ordinances for campuses or for large crowded areas. When I was younger I lived in one of those cities. The only spots worth skating were on campus and if you were arrested you spent the night in jail. One push on a skateboard (longboarders were exempt I think) was all the evidence they needed for the arrest and if you had a camera with footage then you could be charged for damage to private property and what have you. I wasn't of drinking age for that era of skateboarding when it was all about skating during the day and partying at night. I'm from the era when the skateboarders skated during the day and used generators to light up skate spots at night. I didn't see much of the ruckus; just a bunch of skaters trying to get a trick.

I guess it could be considered a sport but the older skateboarders would dispute that -- because they're the ones that started skateboarding to get away from organized sports. Now skateboarders will have to get physicals and take drug tests in order to compete on an international stage. I wonder how many skaters will fail the physical because of anorexia. "You're disqualified. Please eat some sandwiches."

I suppose it depends on the metrics of what you consider a sport.

Skateboarding can be considered a sport moreso than say curling.

The wiki definition of extreme sport of which skateboarding falls under says:
Quote
Extreme sports (also called action sports and adventurous sports) is a popular term for certain activities perceived as having a high level of inherent danger.[1][2][3] These activities often involve speed, height, a high level of physical exertion, and highly specialized gear.

...More recently, the commonly used definition from research is "a competitive (comparison or self-evaluative) activity within which the participant is subjected to natural or unusual physical and mental challenges such as speed, height, depth or natural forces and where fast and accurate cognitive perceptual processing may be required for a successful outcome" by Dr. Rhonda Cohen (2012).
