57 miles each way. 75-90 minute drive in the morning, 90-120 minute drive on the way home :(

Friday's I work from home.
Can't you move closer to your work? That sort of commuting sounds like a total nightmare Oo .

I love my 'commute' now - 10 minute walk. 15 if I stop for coffee & a bread product at one of the six or so coffee shops on the way to work. I noticed a while back that I go entire weeks not going further than about a mile from home, which is kinda great and kinda pathetic at the same time.

Previously, I spent 1.5 hours each way on a train and then a shuttle. Hated that. The only advantage of that was that I got a lot more reading done on the train than I do anywhere now. On the other hand, it is now possible to do things other than read with my nonwork-weekday time.

To school (or more accurately, right to my classroom), it's a 5 minute bike ride or a 10 minute walk.

I don't have a commute to work.

I used to live much closer to the city.  Commute was a 2 minute walk around the corner and a 5 minute tram ride in.

I walked home - took about 15 minutes.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

35 miles, 45 to 80 minutes, depending on how many people decide to crash into each other and stare and crashed cars
Almost identical for me.  The only difference for me is the Friday afternoon commute which can bump that 80 min to 120 plus.

I have a 13.5-15 minute walk to work depending if the traffic lights are against me or not, listening to good music to drown out the traffic.  I can think of few things worse than a commute of a length which varies greatly based on factors out of my control, or wasting more than 1/24th of my working week travelling even if it was smooth and consistent.  Guess that's why I'm still in a crappy job...

Same here, about 15-20 minutes walk with a few streets with traffic to cross, along a tram line that is 2 times faster but usually crowded.
I spent a year linsening to Escape Pod (sci-fi short stories), but stoped after a year...

Before I walked 45 minutes but was too much, and before that drove 40 minutes and walked 15 minutes.
I agree that moving closer to your job is nice when its possible.

If you drive your own car to your place of work you don't need to be complaining in this thread.

You've never experienced LA or Bay Area like traffic before, have you?  It's basically stop and go with 6 lanes of traffic, never going the speed limit.  There is always an accident, and people don't understand faster traffic to the left.  When I had a commute, I willing chose the diseased strangers for an hour + 30 minute bike ride over traffic.  LA's option is much much worse.

Edit: I didn't understand it either coming from the Midwest, until I lived in it.

This happened to me just last Monday. I was on a near empty bus, tons of available seats. This old lady gets on and scans the bus like a buzzard scanning the desert for desiccated corpses. She starts shuffling down the aisle and instead of choosing pretty much any other seat on the bus she shoves my bag over and pins me against the window. It was around the time the bus started driving again that she just started farting furiously. At first I wasn't sure if it was the rumble of the near-nonexistent shocks on the spine destroying bacteria tube, but I quickly came to realize it was the old bag letting loose full winds. Then the smell hit me. Like stale sourdough bread and canned dog food, I nearly gagged, there was no where to go no escape. She just bared down focusing on her darning needles as she declared biological warfare on my senses.

That was just one day. An occurrence of approximate unpleasant magnitude happens at least once a week. More if the public transit gods are angry. I once saw a lady allow her daughter to take a big hot **** on the seat like it was something that she has had to do before. Just pulled down her daughter's pants and pointed at the seat. The world is a ****ed up place, and public transit is but a microcosm.

I feel for you, Americans.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

School bus? I rode one to school way back when. About two hours per day as well. I must have listened to Bad Religion's Gray Race a million times over.

If you meant city bus there was one route that took damn near 1.5hrs. I had to ride two buses and the distance was less than 10 miles

1.5hrs or 15-20 minutes. Buses suck

And buses are the worst. Seriously, THE WORST. Whenever I go to my parents' I walk home from the station, baggage and all, which takes about an hour rather than take the damn bus.

I've got anywhere from 1.5 - 1.8 miles depending on what lot I park in that day for school. Usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes depending on traffic and if I can find a parking spot or not. I also work on campus so the drive is the same. If it's >45F outside and sunny, I'll usually ride either of my motorcycles but otherwise I just drive.

There's nothing wrong with Dutch buses in particular, I hate buses everywhere. All buses are maximally awful :p .

I'm partial to Canadian buses but I have to agree with you. Jogging or riding a bike usually takes less time than waiting for, and riding a bus. Gods forbid it's late and you miss the next bus because of it.

There's a bus stop near my house and right near the office. I could take it if I worked in the office, the only downside is that it's ****ing expensive (1.70 for a single ticket).

A bus driver got set on fire (and died) in QLD recently.

I mean, buses are a bit rough to ride in, but nowhere near that bad!

Damn. Where abouts in CT do you live/work?

I live in Central CT and work in Stamford. So I have to drive through Bridgeport and Fairfield. First 40 miles takes about 40 minutes. The last 17/18 can take up to an hour.

Can't you move closer to your work? That sort of commuting sounds like a total nightmare Oo .

It's an option, but the closer to work I get the higher the housing costs. Also making my commute better would make the wife's worse. Son's doing well at this school, daughter has a great nanny. No sense in upsetting the apple cart. Plus with my luck I'd sell my house (which I don't really want to do anyway), buy a new one closer to work, and then immediately get laid off :)

At least I don't have to deal with what noisyturtle goes through. Any farts are my own.

57 miles each way. 75-90 minute drive in the morning, 90-120 minute drive on the way home :(

Commuter options really suck here.

Friday's I work from home.

Damn. Where abouts in CT do you live/work?

Hrrrrrmm... 4 hours commute..

Let's assume abjr makes $100,000 right now.. $75,000 after tax

Quits now, and finds a closer to home replacement job @ a paycut, $85,000,  $63,750 after tax

Assuming abjr were going to tough out the long commute for 8 more years till the offsprings reach college..

That is only a $90,000 difference

But for it, lets say we go from 4 hours to 1 hour..  250 work days * 3 hours * 8 years,  6000 hours of one's life..

Assuming one makes NO PROGRESS on increasing the salary in 8 years, (unlikely),  that would only be $90,000  for 6000 Waking HOURS of one's life..

If --abjr-- is the industrious type and does not squander those hours.. with 6000 waking hours,  he can master any upper level human skill..   want to be an engineer?,  boom, engineer, chemist?, boom chemist,  Master-pimp?, boom Master-pimp

Let's look at GASOLINE..

116 miles total..

if ur car gets 25 miles/gallon,  that is 4.64 gallons,   @ $2.327 connecticut average, is $10.797

For 8 years 250 workdays per year.. is   $21594.56

If you go from 4 hours to 1 hour commute, ~25% of the gas,  that is $16195.92 in fuel savings..

Now,  from that $90,000 subtract another $16195.92..

Focusing on getting a new job should would greatly benefit --abjr--   Even @ a 15% cut.
