Best Number pad
« on: Thu, 25 August 2016, 09:03:27 »
In your opinion, who makes the best number pad? I am looking for something to go with my Novatouch. It is not a deal breaker however, it would be nice if it had MX keys. I like being able to swap out the caps. Thank you very much for your time.

I got the Realforce numpad on massdrop a few months back and I love it (I know you can buy it elsewhere, but massdrop has a good write-up). Its not MX but its got that great topre feel.  :thumb:

I've been using a Leopold FC210TP for a couple years now and I'm very happy with it.  (I got it off Massdrop, but I see Mechanicalkeyboards.com also has some.) Well built and I've really gotten used to the extra keys on the top row.

Big caveat with that recommendation though, it outputs the same keystrokes as the number row on a keyboard, not the standard keypad codes.  As I use it for data entry and not gaming, it doesn't bother me at all.  For others who want the differentiated codes, it's a complete show stopper.  Do your research and know its limitations, but if you don't need the actual keypad codes, it's fantastic.

Also getting 3rd party keycaps that have support for the extra row is a little hit or miss.  Some include it, some don't.

Honestly, this is an underdeveloped area in the market. I still haven'd found a good TMK-compatible 5x4 where you can pick from more than one case (which isn't plastic) and allow you to put in zealios.

Bit big for a numpad. But the good thing about the ergodox is that you have three things in one - keyboard, game controller and TK!

+1

I would love to have a decent numpad to match my 60% 5 row keyboards. I wouldn't mind if they were 5xWhatever wide, I just want it to line up properly with the case. We got so close with the Smart68 group buy numpad. Disappointed.

The Realforce 23U is undoubtedly my favorite thus far. I bought it from Massdrop and it's excellent.

I'm content with those cheap keypads that come with MX Blues. I like my keypads to have slightly stiffer clicky switches so that it's less difficult to put the wrong numbers in.
