Official ErgoDox sculpted from indiegogo, feedback needed
« on: Sun, 16 October 2016, 17:21:41 »
Hello, Recently I learned about ErgoDox keyboard and I am really into it. There is just one issue, I cannot decide which keycap set will fit me better - regular or sculpted.

I have seen interesting posts here on geekhack, yet none answered my doubts.

I am pretty sure I will be using the ErgoDox keyboard laying flat - like this https://www.flickr.com/photos/panicfx/13745376564/

With such setup are the sculpted keys good to use? Maybe regular are actually better? From the pictures, https://ergodox-ez.com/collections/keyboard-bundles/products/ergodox-ez-bundle-with-blank-keycaps ,  it looks to me that the sculpted design is more for up-tilt setups. I am using for a long time Microsoft Natural 4000 and I really love the reverse tilt or at least I keep the keyboard flat when I have to use standard one.

I would love to hear from anyone having the ErgoDox with sculpted keys.

I think the sculpted keys are designed for the reach of users' fingers, therefore whether the keyboard is tilted or not should be irrelevant.

However, one thing for sure: ABS caps will 'shine' after some use. Some people like the SP font and the DSA spherical uniform profile through, but that's very subjective.
Wishlist: 1) nice thick Alps caps; 2) Cherry profile POM;
More
Wishful-list: 1) We order from keyboard-layout-editor.com; 2) usable Trackpoint module for all keyboards

I have an EZ with DCS blanks. I usually use don't use it flat, found the tenting to be much more comfortable, both when working at a standing desk, and when sitting. But during my initial few weeks, while getting used to the split nature of the keyboard, I used it flat. The DCS caps were lovely in that case too. So much so, that whenever I have to type on a uniform profile, it feels uncomfortable.

That, and the EZ has DCS blanks. Blanks are awesome. So is DCS, the two combined even more so.

you need lots of tenting..  55degrees is the max possible assuming a standing desk, with table surface 2-3 inches below the elbow.

70 degrees is approximately the neutral point for the wrist,  but obviously taking into account the thickness of the keyboard, you can't tent that high..

to approach 55degrees, you need 100mm m3 screws and 50mm m3 screws..  they're cheap on ebay..

THis works for the original ergodox,

If you've got an ergodox ez..  high tenting is a major problem, because it does not have a 90degree edge on the outer rim of the keyboard,  it's rounded.

I suppose if you modify a rubber piece to fit under the rounded edge, it is possible, but well, then you might as well buy the original ergodox instead of doing so many mods.

Only the original ergodox can be tented to extreme angles..
